Holy shit at Alice. Marketing costs I assume were huge as well (at least 100m+), so it may need to get 600m+ WW just to break even. I was going to call it a huge succuess but I assumed the budget was more around 150m.

Sheesh. Studios really need to learn how to minimize budgets.

Do you fucking realize how much they made on production ties alone? They made tens of millions even before the movie came out. It's gonna be a huge moneymaker all things considered, and $250 m is more than a fair price for it. We all know WW b/o is just one layer of the business model, and yet we keep talking about breaking even with regard to theatrical grosses, as if it really matters. No, it doesn't. Not anymore.

I agree I made a mistake saying it needed 600m+ to break even. That said, the budget was still over-blown.

As someone wisely mentioned $200 m is the new $150 m, so $250 m for Alice does not surprise me that much. Anyway, this is headed towards $700-750 m WW, if not more, so even that alone covers all the costs. Disney is a monster conglomerate with possibly the biggest money-making opportunities in the entire industry, so a movie like this becomes a milker for its many businesses in the long run, which justifies the investment.

It's really not so much whether or not it was worth investing in or not. I mean, Alice could have cost 300m, and it still would have been worth the investment.

It's just that the film IMO could have had a lot lower budget and still look the same and make the same money. The film itself didn't really look that expensives, and except for Depp, none of the stars should have really had that big of a salary (and if they demanded big bucks, then just replace them. It's not like Anne Hathaway helped the movie at all).

If Burton needed $250 m, he has a right for every cent of it. He deserves all the money he wants to put his vision on the screen. If he wants Hathaway, he gets Hathaway. He's not the director who has a need to cut costs. And I believe 3D conversion is actually more expensive than we think.

Ouch. Maybe it'll do well overseas, but that's a tough budget to justify and make back for this type of film. This is coming from someone catching the first matinee tomorrow.

TBH seems to be expensive as well. It can make almost near to that budget if the film fails to deliver and given the strong competition coming weeks this could end up with just about the same Production Budget.

Repo Men is definitely a flop. Though Overseas could help a little bit if they market this one as an action thriller.

Wimpy Kid will prove another Fox family hit. A sequel as LadiesMan suggested can happen though I am not sure if there was a sequel to the book

I really don't think 40-50M is that much, seems quite reasonable to me actually. The Ugly Truth was 38M and Aniston surely got more for this than Heigl got for that. Plus this (having not seen the film) has action sequences, etc. that Ugly Truth didn't. Plus this type of film does well on DVD.

Repo Men used its 32m well at least. :P It's a very attractive film. The Blade Runner-esque futuristic cityscapes are great.

I hope it turns a profit (way, way) down the road.

No it's not. It will easily recover all the costs given all the income sources. Actually, I have a really hard time calling anything with the budget under $50 m that has a chance of making around the same amount in theaters WW, a flop. Not a cash cow and not a solid moneymaker, but not a flop either.

Butler's comedies do good overseas too, Ugly Truth made over 200 million WW. PS I Love you also made over 100 million overseas. Gonna be another big hit for Butler. He's picking some right movies right now.

Repo Men did not have that many production ties, but I agree it'll end up turning some profit for Universal. It looks like the type of film that will get at least 10 million for television distribution rights.

And yet apparently MvA didn't do well enough (overseas) to warrant a sequel (so I assume they were not content with the overall worldwide gross).

Though I expect Dragon to do better worldwide - more 3D screens now. Should finish with $400+ million WW, maybe $500+ million.

Dragon definitely had a smaller marketing budget than MvA. MvA's stunt at the Super Bowl alone cost 10m+. It also had way more promotions and advertising.

Yes, but they wasted 30-35 million on 3D conversion.

It's also worth mentioning the Monsters Vs. Aliens didn't leave the best taste in the mouth of moviegoers, whereas it appears Dragon is very well liked. So that's a factor too IMO.
