So Madagascar 2 is indeed the biggest of the year; could challenge Ratatouille?

Likely will. It#s been #1 for five weeks here now and there's nothing else big for the kids really...It's cracking 6 million admissions and will probably top Ratatouille too, yeah.

Post subject:  Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: January 1-4 and all updated

As you can see, Inkheart actually rebounded well and should be on its way to 1.4-1.5 million admissionms after a rather weak start.

Madagascar 2 rules all. It won't top the first film's total, but will get close enough. Definitely passing 6 million admissions, making it the first film to do so in a year.

Australia is pretty leggy thus far. I'm pretty sure it'll pass 2 million admissions overall, though the distributor's hope for 3 million won't be fulfilled. There was tons of advertising for it here and some hype too, I'd say. I'm not surprised atits performance.

Quantum of Solace has been holding up well during the past few weeks, so it will probably make it to 4.85 million now.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis is probably THE sleeper hit of 2008 in Germany. I mean it has been increasing for the past THREE WEEKS STRAIGHT! Right now I think that 1.6-1.7 million admissions is possible for it, but I wouldn't even rule out 2 million if it stays in theatres long enough.

Transporter 3 definitely managed a HUGE break-out! Its opening weekend admissions number is about ten times that of the first film and almost four times the opening of Transporter 2. Its opening weekend is bigger than of films like National Treasure 2, Wanted, Kung-Fu Panda, Prince Caspian, Rush Hour 3 and all The Fast and the Furious flicks here...wow!

Madagascar 2 dropped hard (and so did all other family-oriented films) because the school kicked off again. It should still be good for 6+ million admissions, though.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis'
run is simply incredible! Its 11th weekend is higher than its 7th. The WoM is quite through the roof too, so we can expect some more to come. Definitely looking at 1.8+ million admissions, probably even 2 million, making it THE break-out of the year in Germany (ahead of Earth, I'd say).

Great opening for Ice Age 3 considering we had hot weather and the summer break hasn't started in all schools yet. It's the best opening for a film since Madagascar 2 and with the weather getting worse and more schools being out, it should outdo Madagascar 2's total admissions number (6,041,517). However, the opening was not nearly as strong as Ice Age 2's which managed almost 2.4 million admissions during its first four days and became the highest-grossing CG animated film ever in Germany. Ice Age 3 will duke it out with Harry Potter 6 for the top title of the year. I see both heading towards around 6.5-7 million admissions.

Transformers 2 is tracking about 200,000 admissions ahead of the first film at the same point of its run. However, legs seem to be pretty bad so that the total difference won't get much bigger either. I see a 1.7 million admissions finish or so. Not as good as I expected, but still decent.

It's pretty amazing that Angels & Demons is in the Top 3 after 8 weeks on release, but that should be mostly attributed to the pretty empty marketplace. Considering there's only one big release next week and again only one big release the weekend after, it will remain seated in the Top 10 for quite some time. On the whole, its legs were better than The Da Vinci Code's here (that one was hurt by the World Cup, though). It has a small shot at 4.5 million sitll if it manages to hang around for a while. That'd mean only about 20% less than The Da Vinci Code (which ended up with 5,638,982 admissions here). Angels & Demons is already more successful here than all of last year's films except for Quantum of Solace and Madagascar 2.

Night at the Museum 2 won't end up far off its predecessor either. It is looking at 2.25 million, the first one got 3.1 million. The drop-off is better than in the US.

Oh and despite seeming otherwise, for a horror flick Drag Me to Hell actually did pretty decently here. It's bigger than My Bloody Valentine, Froday the 13th, The Unborn and so on here...

yikes. WTF?? How can a 3d movie do so bad? I think people are getting tired of 3D.

I don't know about you by the trailers to A Christmas Carol were not very inviting. It just seems boring and off-putting in some way. The character of Scrooge is while comes to the party in the end is very negative and kids may not warm to that. Also, the trailer didn't do enough to make this something magical or adventurous like the Polar Express. It will take a while for this movie to get into stride but as this is the undisputed Christmas themed movie of the season it won't do too badly.

I don't see more than $150m Domestic and an additional $150m or so overseas.

As for Avatar, as there's more marketing for it and people generally have a positive feeling towards James Cameron and seeing as this is his first feature movie since Titanic, should at least make people want to go to see what it's all about
