Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
I hope the overcrowded market won't prevent Up in the Air from crossing 1 million admissions. It looks to open with a very good PTA and from the reactions I gathered so far should have very good legs under normal circumstances...

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Well, you can expect a pretty empty marketplace in June - so distributor stuff everything in there now or after the World Cup...

I am really sure now that 11 million admissions is happening (that would put it in the all-time Top 10 admissions-wise). Right now it's #31 al-time, but should be around #24 or #24 by the end of the weekend and will be #18 by the end of its next. Terrific legs. Its performance here is very very impressive. That would be Amazing!

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Well, according to the estimates Avatar rose a bit this weekend (around 2.5%) to 540,000 admissions putting the film at 8.15 million admissions. That makes it the #25 movie of all-time in admissions here. It should crack the Top 20 by the end of the next weekend.
11+ million admissions, here we come.

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Oh and too bad A Christmas Carol missed 1 million admissions. We'd have tied 2000 and 2001 for most 1+ million admissions films ever then. However, 2010 is already off to a great start.
I wonder whether Alvin 2 will pass 2 million admissions, making it the 20th film of 2009 to do so. It probably will...

It is staying really well in Germany. Sherlock is still quite far for the 2nd position in admissions

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Official figures for 2009 are out:
Box Office rose 22.8 % to 976.1m Euros (2nd all-time) Admissions rose 13.1 % to 146.3m (best in 5 years - 8th best since reunification) Average ticket price rose 8.6 % to 6.67 Euros
Not bad for a recession year...

There have been a lot of great performers last year. And this year is off to a great start. Three 1+ million admissions films from January alone...

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Legs are gonna be cut short big time for most movies other than Avatar (which just keeps holding on to most of its 3D screens). Many movies are being dropped by theatres even though they're still doing well due to the onslaught of four very promising openers.

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Around here, however, business will be relatively tame (Karneval).
BTW, mark, have we ever had a weekend when each movie in the Top 10 had over 100,000 admissions? If not what's the record number?

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
I know it happened, but I don't know by heart which weekend and how many - usually the October 3rd weekend is pretty crowded...

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Okay, last time it happened was October 23rd 2008, ten movies above the 100,000 admissions mark...
EDIT: But I see only 9 movies doing so this weekend...

Heh
It's Complicated and Friendship! normally would have had a chance too, but they're just losing too many night showings. Hell, even Zeiten Ändern Dich is not a given...it is probably very frontloaded. Only the four openers + Up in the Air + Holmes + Avatar + Meatballs will definitely make it.

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Yep, but with 1,500 prints for the big 3 flooding the market, plus RECEP IVEDIK 3 and AVATAR still going strong someone has to lose - and even AVATAR is not immune in plenty of theaters...

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
Doesn't it still get to keep all of its 3D screens, though? (and I assume that's where it gets most of its admissions from anyway). At least in Bonn, Cologne and everywhere around it doesn't lose any 3D screens.

Re: Germany Box-Office Thread: Avatar #1
You have to look at medium and small sized markets - that's where AVATAR is losing showtimes or is cancelled altogether...

Well, but you're still predicting a sub-20% decrease

Which unfortunately would be the biggest decrease in its run...
