Post Canadian Box Office 2008
Of course it's part of the domestic box office, but still... the taste of the Canadians appears much more European meaning that movies like James Bond or Lord of the Rings are doing proportionally much better than in the U.S.A....

And since the Canadian final weekend numbers appear much earlier than the (total) domestic weekend numbers I would like to start this new thread to discuss what's going on in the North...

Indy's about to take the lead.

I wonder whether Will Smith, Batman, or Harry Potter have the weight to outgross it. My guess is that they do. Canada (and I'm saying this as a born Canadian) is too winter-y of a place for good ol' Western to be the biggest film of the year.

I wouldnt be surprised if Wall-E falls short of Kung Fu Panda in many countries.

Canadians do not like Pixar for some strange reason...

However many people watch the movies on dvd and TV.

For comparison, this is how Pixar films performed in Oz...

Finding Nemo - $37.3m (No.2 behind ROTK)
The Incredibles - $26.7m
Monsters Inc - $25.6m
Toy Story 2 - $20.1m
A Bug's Life - $20.0m
Cars - $17.6m
Ratatouille - $14.5m (Release date botched)
Toy Story - $13.7m

(Multiply by 10 to get the US equivalent)

When was Ratatouille released?
If Disney/Pixar are in charge of the release dates in other countries that's a damn stupid thing to do.
I know they lose a lot of audience here because their movies are delayed a good 2-3 months.

Well Nemo was released in late August in Australia. so it was a 3 month wait but it wasn't botched. i remember Warner Bros. was gonna do a similar thing last year with Harry Potter, but those fankids started a nationwide petition. Australian states don't have a conformed school/semester break system. its fucks up release dates for family films all the time.

Post Re: Canadian Box Office (WANTED beats WALL-E)
Ratatouille was released on 6th September 2007. It was held back till then because while most of the the US summer big films come out in May/June/July - there is only one set of school holidays in each state during that period and that lasts for 2 weeks as its winter here. So some films get held back till the September school holidays because lets face it - US releases in September are pathetic.

Now the bad news for Ratatouille is that it was released too early before school holidays so started to run out of steam by the time holidays came around. Also - holidays arent uniform across the country so its quite common to see animated films open small and have huge legs as each state comes online with school holidays. This isnt an issue at Christmas/Summer or for non kids films.

Yep the delay doesnt hurt it - its more the early release and the scattered holidays.
