I thought this would be an interesting comparison to the multiplier thread for the US gross. The gross chart includes all releases, the multiplier chart includes all films released in over 100 screens. All gross charts are in £'s. 2005 so far:
2 The Aviator* £4,671,663 3 Closer* £4,047,398 4 Team america* £3,386,600 5 Alexander* £2,583,849 6 Million dollar baby* £2,069,518 7 Vera drake £925,838 8 Elektra £791,914 9 Ray* £485,005 10 Vaniy fair* £444,189 11 Ladder 49* £428,077 12 A Very long e'ment £312,042 13 2046 £189,942 14 Vaada £109,525 15 Elaan £101,638 16 Kisna £100,709 As of 26th January 2005 2005 Multipliers:
2 White noise 3.0199 3 Closer* 2.5803 4 Million dollar baby* 2.5743 5 Team america* 2.2187 6 Vaniy fair* 2.1700 7 Alexander* 2.1530 8 Elektra 1 9 Ray* 1 10 Ladder 49* 1 11 A Very long e'ment 1 As of 26th January 2005 Already it would seem that the UK box office is not quite as frontloaded as the US market as 2 films have already hit a multiplier of 3. Whether or not this will continue with bigger releases throughout the year we'll have to see, i think the UK market is gradually becoming more frontloaded on the whole. I would expect The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby to have 2 of the biggest multipliers of the year. I'll update this each week when weekend figures are released (full lists usually available on a tuesday). *Films released in US in 2004, but UK in 2005. |

Films in the UK have much better legs than US films cause so far only one film in 2005 in the US has hit a 2 multiplier and 2 in the UK have hit 3 multipliers!!! |

Well it certainly looks that way so far with the early data. We'll have to see how it pans out through the next few months, it may just be a fluke that these films are having good legs. Who knows! It does seem in general that films don't open as big (comparatively) as in the US. |

Top UK January Openings:
2 8 Mile £4,440,334 2003 3 Catch me if you can £3,720,957 2003 4 Scary movie 3 £3,490,585 2004 5 Vanilla sky £2,978,264 2002 Releases Friday 28th January Meet The Fockers Creep Sideways Assault on Precinct 13 With Fockers being released this friday, i expect it to take the biggest opening week ever in January with £5million plus. I just don't see any competition for this film. Assault on precinct 13 was pushed back a week last minute (just like Elektra the week before last) which does not bode well for the film. Sideways should do OK with all the Oscar buzz, but doesn't have a high screen count and Creep should take advantage of the recent run on horrors. I expect good things for the holdovers, The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby should increase slightly, and Closer should see a good drop. All in all a busy weekend ahead, i hope to see Fockers and Creep. |

Yeah i finally saw Fockers this afternoon (after trying to see it friday - it was sold out for the night), i've never seen it that busy on a sunday afternoon before! It was on the biggest screen and was easily sold out. |

Weekend Numbers January 28-30 1 Meet the fockers £7,917,661 2 Closer £913,603 3 Assault on precinct 13 £748,846 4 The Aviator £625,383 5 Team america:World police £485,992 6 Creep £477,687 7 Million dollar baby £449,896 8 Sideways 3£49,642 9 White noise £344,480 10 Ray £287,435 Meet The Fockers breaks the January opening record by a LONG way with an amazing opening weekend (the 19th biggest ever in £'s). Closer dropped 42% from last weekend and lost the top spot in its third week which was expected with such a big release up against it. Assault on Precinct 13 performed better than many expected, but a fairly average opening. Aviator and Million Dollar Baby had larger drops than i expected with all the oscar buzz (-32% and -45% respectively). Special mention to Creep which had the 4th best screen average of the weekend (released in 194 screens compared to Fockers 456) and continued the great run of horrors recently. 2005 to date (all £'s): 1 Meet the fockers 7,917,661 2 White noise 6,073,393 3 The Aviator 5,821,350 4 Closer 5,792,036 5 Team america:World police 4,314,630 6 Million dollar baby 2,888,286 7 Alexander 2,679,152 8 Elektra 1,303,703 9 Vera drake 1,119,060 10 Ray 1,019,545 11 Assault on precinct 13 748,846 12 A Very long engagement 735,679 13 Ladder 49 686,700 14 Vaniy fair 542,123 15 Creep 477,687 16 Sideways 349,642 17 2046 252,804 18 Kisna 179,827 19 Elaan 120,673 20 Vaada 120,332 2005 Multipliers to Date (for films opening in over 100 screens): 1 The Aviator 3.76 2 Closer 3.69 3 Million dollar baby 3.59 4 White noise 3.39 5 Team america:World police 2.82 6 Vaniy fair 2.64 7 A Very long engagement 2.35 8 Alexander 2.23 9 Ray 2.10 10 Elektra 1.64 11 Ladder 49 1.60 12 Meet the fockers 1 13 Assault on precinct 13 1 14 Creep 1 |

Weekend Preview (Slightly later than i had planned!!) New releases: Oceans 12 & Racing Stripes February Openings: Monsters, inc 9,200,257 2002 Toy story 2 7,758,936 2000 Hannibal 6,402,540 2001 Ocean's 11 5,095,062 2002 A Bug's life 4,204,678 1999 This is an interesting weekend, weekend 1 of Oceans 12 vs Weekend 2 of Fockers. I would expect Fockers to drop around 35% to give it a total of £5.2 million. I haven't seen a huge amount of advertising for Oceans 12, certainly nowhere near as much as Fockers, i think it might open slighly lower than the original (but only slightly) at around £5million. I saw Creep on friday night (wonderful gore-fest by the way) and they were both sold out for the night, Fockers had more showings, but Oceans was in the bigger screen, so its going to be a very close call. It wouldn't surprise me either way. Racing Stripes should open to a moderate £600,000, i've not seen ANY advertising for this. Overall this has the potential to be one of the busiest weekends of the year outside of summer. So what do you think? Fockers or Oceans 12?? |

O12 has had decent Marketing, ive seen more for Oceans than i did for Fockers, but not as good. It should be able to pull off a £5-6million weekend, I doubt it will come close to Fockers opening. |

Weekend Numbers 4-6 February In Spain, "Fockers" opened at No. 1 with $4.6 million, commanding 43% of the market, ahead of fellow rookie "Million Dollar Baby" at No. 2. The film remained at No. 1 in the U.K. with $8.8 million against a sterling $6.6 million opening for "Ocean's Twelve." Source Which means: Meet The Fockers £4,800,000 Oceans 12 £3,600,00 Meet The Fockers dropped approx 39% from its opening weekend (35% excluding previews of £611,306) which was pretty much expected. Its total gross is now £16 million which already should be good enough to finish in the years top ten, and could be on its way to around £30million or just above. Oceans 12 had a somewhat poor opening which was lower than expected. The £3.6million take is down 29% on the originals opening in £'s and won't match the originals final gross of £26million. Full weekend number should be available tomorrow. It will be interesting as BAFTA nominated movies had a limited re-release this weekend (HP3, Collateral, Motorcycle diaries, Dead Mans Shoes, Finding Neverland etc) so all should have a small weekend take. |
