What would you say was the biggest surprise for you, in terms of box office?

I would say The Devil Wears Prada's outstanding performance, but I wasn't really that surprised by it, really.

I think I may have been most surprised by Miami Vice's totally mediocre performance at the box office. Who would have suspected it would probably gross less than Barnyard in May?

This was a very underwhelming summer. It completely lacked the excitement that 2003 or 1999 or 2004 had. Surprises? None really.

Step Up's opening was pretty surprising, I thought.

Biggest positive surprise would be The Devil Wears Prada. I was also really surprised with Step Up.

Negative surprise would be Snakes on a Plane. Miami Vice didn't do that well, but I wasn't totally shocked.

Well it was better than last summer that is the only thing really good about it.

You should rent it when it comes on DVD.

I swear you won't hate it, Meryl Streep is too funny to hate it. I mean, if you thought movies like Last Holiday were OK and everything...

Not surprised by Miami Vice's performance. It's a film that bounds to depend heavily on WOM, as its opening number is pretty much set given how Collateral and other adult-oriented films opened, and the bad WOM just left it no chance.

I'd say The Devil Wears Prada. Once the reviews came in, we could see its potential, but $120m is a huge number for such a film. Step Up's opening is another one.

Otherwise, pretty uneventful summer. We could feel how most of the runs would turn out once we got closer to each's release.

Well, my mom is probably gonna buy it because it's like her favorite movie in a long time, so maybe.

I can honestly say that this was one of the most dull box office summers. Maybe the dullest I've seen. I don't really feel like I've missed anything.

Devil Wears Prada definitely was the biggest surprise, and I believe Libs knew that would get the most votes, and she wanted some praises sung for it, so she started this thread. :funny: Prada was a fantastic movie, though, and deserved every bit of success it has had. It's my 2nd favorite movie of the year, so far.

...with the biggest opening/single day and weekend in box office history? Oh that was Pirates by the way, since you missed everything. Last year was a million times more boring than this summer :nerd:

I expected this summer to be dull and it didnt dissapoint. Actually apart from POTC's performance and the interesting month of May, i'd say 2005 was slightly more interesting overall. Anyway, this summer was just the lull before the mega summers of 07 and 08!

Now - regarding the biggest surprises - I'd go with Devil Wears Prada and probably the Barnyard which many of us thought would not even make $20m.

I think on this board atleast - with tracking, yahoo numbers, crowd reports etc - it will become less and less common for us to see true surprises at the box office.

Not only was this a dull summer but was also filled with huge dissapointments and mediocre films.

Devil Wears Prada is obviously the biggest surprise.

Biggest surprise - The overwhelming number of crappy high-profile films (Pirates, The Da Vinci Code, Superman Returns, Mission: Impossible 3, Talladega Nights). The sad thing is, they all did well which means the public is encouraging crappiness.

I don't know...

Records getting broken is happening so frequently now that I don't find it really THAT exciting anymore.

Low opening and good reviews for Snakes On A Plane. I thought, it would be completely otherwise.

If we count last weekend as summer BO weekend.

I wouldn't count on Indiana Jones or James Cameron just yet.
