 TITANIC: New Adjusted Numbers
Well, the film is now at $800m adjusted. Italics refer to long weekends, number in bracket means position held by the film. Admissions figures are included as well (estimates, of course) and so is the adjusted theatre average.
It's WW Total, adjusted, btw, is in excess of $2.5B by now, in all likelihood.

It's all but impossible to determine that. This is what you have to do:
1) Find the data from all markets; that in itself is hell
2) Find the avg. ticket price in all 57 markets where it opened
3) find the currency exchange rate between the currencies in those countries and the dollar in the US as it was between Dec. 1997 and August 1998
4) Find the change in ticket prices in those countries
5) Adjust the film's gross in that currency using the change in ticket prices and the dollar/currency exchange rate then
6) Convert the adjusted gross into current dollar prices
7) repeat 57 times
See? It's hell, isn't it? Plus, I dont even know if there is completely accurate data anywhere. If so, only Fox would know.

Well, it's not really necessary for them to giveo ut the specifics; it's a publicly traded company (News Corp), but they just announced the revenues.
The studios usually get 40-50% of the film's total overseas, so Fox's revenues would correspond to half the film's total.
It's really tough to determine the exact number. A very general estimate would be $2.5B; it's number one even if all films are adjusted; the film was bigger in France, for example, than GWTW was, and it played in markets where GWTW could not possibly have had a chance to gross much.

Disagree. I think a movie will make over $600 million in the next few years or so. Not sure which one yet, but something probably will. Or will come close. In terms of the opening and legs and weekends of the movie, it won't happen again.

That is what I meant. I didn't say that the gross won't be topped, but that the run itself, in terms of drops and rises won't be repeated

Check the Weekend numbers I just posted; they're even more amazing. I mean, the film was making $20m+ when most films get pulled out of theatres.
BTW
It's unadjusted numbers are still the most amazing out there; the film had 10 $20m+ weekends, something unmatched in box office history. So dont think that its impressive just because its adjusted, thats far from the truth. This is after all the #1 film on the domestic and WW chart. Its there for a reason.
The charts above show how a film like Titanic would compare to the 2004 releases, if it had the same impact on the box office that Titanic did in 1997/1998.

there will be films opeing over 150m in 06, 07, 08 ,09 and 2010 the question is which one will have the legs neaded to pass titanics unadjusted gross 8)

Eventually, there will be such films
But mark my word, not movie will open with $150+ million by 2006. The earliest, I'd say by 2008.

I dont see a film making a BO run like that for a very long time. The whole nature of BO has changed with the popularity of DVD and pirated movies. Really I dont think even Titanic would have made as much as it did back then in 2004. It probably would have topped out at about $450-$475m. Plus there is so much more competition now.
Box - where you a box office watcher during Titanic's run?
Im thankful I was as it was a rare time in a movie fans life. I remember everyweekend wondering if it would finally lose the number 1 position. Eventually it gave it up to Lost in Space of all films.
I remember predicting it would make around $250m before it opened and that was an optimistic prediction! Noone was prepared for its record breaking run.
I also remember an ad in Variety taken out by Speilberg and Lucas congratulating Cameron on taking the No.1 position. I think it was a drawing of ET and R2D2 handing over a trophy to Cameron.
BTW - I think Valentines Day was the biggest BO day of its run!

It's BECAUSE of Titanic that got into the box office tracking :Grins:
And it's ruined my life since
Hahah,j/k
Ya, it was simply amazing. It also gave me a wrong idea of how films have their run; I'm still usually disappointed with films, because my first experience was with Titanic, and nothing tops that.
That's why I was so amazed with Spider-Man's $114.8m opening weekend. It seemed as spectacular a record as those that Titanic broke, you know?

Oh yeah Titanic's gross was a box office anomoly. By starting with that incredible BO story - its like you spent a month with that Alessandra in your avatar and then followed that up with three years of living with Kathy Bates!!
Spidermans opening weekend was probably the biggest story after Titanic's run thats for sure.
I began BO watching during the 94 golden era of Lion King and Forrest Gump. Similar to you it was a fantastic time for BO analysis and quality movies. I was then let down with the abysmal BO year known as 1995. However back then I could only wish to have all this BO data we have now. No intermet so i used to rely on Entertainment tonight and Variety. I also didnt get the weekend numbers till Tuesday morning when id record NBC today (which was live here at 2am) and get the weekend estimates for the top 3 films (sometimes id get lucky and they would do a top 5). I then had to record them on my computer till I got hold of actuals via Variety a few weeks later. Crazy stuff when you consider we know how the weekend will pan out when we get the Friday numbers on the net!!!!
