I was just thinking about this. Where does the industry go after this opening? What changes will we see, and what can we expect?

It should send a message to skip the mid week opening and stick with Fridays....

How about "Release stuff that people actually WANT to see".

It might help them understand people want more humor in their blockbusters. Superman Returns and MI:3 could have used more humor.

And it might possibly open them up to the power of women moviegoers. It was they as much as any demographic that made Pirates big.

I'm not expecting any major changes but maybe a nudge here or there.

Well, it'll still easily have the biggest ticket sales ever in a weekend.

It means that PotC3 will have a $200M+ 4-day weekend next May.

Maybe that you shouldn't wait too long for sequels

a movie doesn't need a fanatical fanbase to open huge, and that the real money still comes from the general audience.

With both Shrek 2 and this, it might mean they take anti-heroes more seriously.

General audience, ahh, yes. Studios have become too fixated on genres to realize that. Pirates harkens back to the Raiders days when movies were lighthearted and fun.

But, small budget horror, action, comedies, etc are all very profitable.

Certainly. Big budget movies are good to have once in a while too, except that they have been rather misguided as of late.

Hire Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot. They both wrote both POTC's, Shrek, and National Treasure, all blockbuster crowd-pleasers.

I think it teaches the studios a lesson about not over marketing your movies.

Pirates 2 was made because people wanted to see what happens to Jack next (along with part three).

That, or wait until literally the last day to make a push. The Youtube ads Disney ran for 24 hours on Thursday registered 80-90 million hits.

Hopefully it will signal that there is life beyond comic book films.

And that like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, if you really put care and attention and detail into your character, sets, film, you can produce something beautiful that can bring in a large audience.

Fun > All.

That was Supes biggest problem, and it's the reason Pirates is huge.
