Is this Opening Weekend if they opened on a Friday? Because in that case, liesse00 is pretty much underestimating every single movie he listed. Some of those are even lower than their original Opening Weekends.

Spider-Man 2, Shrek 2 and Revenge of the Sith would have all broken that opening weekend record, probably.

Revenge of the Sith would've smashed the record by at least $10 million. Just by adding its midnight showings to its OW, that's a $9 million lead.

And Matrix Reloaded would have come close.
I think the chase for the record would have gone like this:
5/16-18/2003- The Matrix Reloaded- $113.1 million (Narrowly misses Spider-Man)
5/21-23/2004- Shrek 2- $118.5 million (Gets past Spider-Man, obviously)
7/02-04/2004- Spider-Man 2- $120.3 million (Edges Shrek 2 thanks to an enormnous opening day)
5/20-22/2005- Revenge of the Sith- $133.4 million (Cruises past Spider-Man 2)
Opening Days for Each:
Matrix Reloaded- $46 million
Shrek 2- $32.8 million
Spider-Man 2- $48.6 million
ROTS- $55.9 million
Obviously, these are just guesses, since we'll never know.

No no no, In the case of Spider-Man 2 I added up it's wednesday, thursday and friday numbers and it came out 96.7 million. I'm just talking about Friday gross alone, you guys see what I'm doing? Sorry if i didn't make it clear enough, it's kind of hard to describe it writing. Could you imagine seeing 96.7 on Friday!

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.

That's impossible. For SM2, that would have meant that it would have had a $23,290 per theatre average in one day, which would be more than just merely feasible if it were playing on 6 screens or something like that, but 4,152 theatres?
My formula for these is take the Wednesday (or in the case of ROTS and Matrix Reloaded Thursday) gross and Friday gross, add them together, and divide by 1.5. That would have given SM2 (40.4+32.5/2) and opening day (Friday) of $48.6 million.

I know I'm just having some fun, I didn't want to get all technical and use a whole bunch of formula's.

Re: If they opened on a Friday
liesse00 wrote: I got really bored and decided to crunch some numbers. This is kind of a "what could of been scenerio". I went through and looked up some big movies that opened on a Wednesday and in some cases Tuesday's and Thursday's and added up there numbers of what they grossed leading up to Friday and what they made on Friday. Also this is just for fun we will never know what this movies could of made if they opened on a Friday but interesting non the less and if anyone wants to look for other movies go ahead and add them to the list.
Terminator 3 - 41,382,326 Leagally Bonde 2 - 22,420,185 Pirates of the Caribbean - 38,836,375 Spider-Man 2 - 96,707,866 Star Wars Episode 3 - 83,543,472 Batman Begins - 39,223,788 War of the Worlds - 57,602,976 King Kong - 30,519,740
Why would they open that low? the weekend gross would have been greater if they opened on a friday, not weaker, your post makes no sense.

It's not a worthless thread. It actually has some relevancy and it's interesting.
Now if only some of the users at BOM would do the same with their duplicate threads that actually are worthless.
