Post Whats a more important audience? Kids or teenagers?
it seems these 2 huge audiences provide tons of ticket sales, but which is better to have? In recent years, a lot of the hype machines-episde 3, spider-man 2, xmen 3, nemo, matrix reloaded, shrek 2, spiderman, incredibles,-all appeal to one of these.

the ones that appeal to mainly teens and not kids-episode 3, matrix 2, xmen 3-all open HUGE, but seem to drop like rocks.

the ones that appeal to mainly kids and not teens-nemo, incredibles, open smaller but have much better legs and finish with better grosses.

the ones that appeal to both-the spidermans, shrek 2, get the huge hype and mega openings fro mteens, but have the great legs from kids to make each get huge grosses bigger then just bout all the rest. i think this could be a newway of looking at predictions. for example, this could mean pirates 2 will be more frontloaded then we think due to its audience being mainly teenagers. it could mean superman returns has better legs cause its more to kids then teens. While both would go int he category of appealing to both, knowing the target audiences and what their prone to do can reallyu help predicts. so, which do you think is better to have for a film. the teenage audience of kid audience? the real blockbustrs have both, but if you had to pick one which would you take?

If you want a hit movie more often than not you have the best shot with a kids movie.

Its close.

Kids bring with them parents and hence more $$.

Teens can watch anything from a kids film to and adult drama hence bringing in the $$.

Both are equally important.

Lets see...

If you get the kids audience... you get money for the kids... AND their parents who are taking them...

But, the teenage audience will bring in alot more of either the kids/adults audience...

You can't just target one...

I would hardly say Spider-man 2 had good legs. It grossed more than half of it's final domestic tally in it's first week. Just by looking at the numbers, it looks like both Reloaded and SM2 made about the same percentage of their final grosses in their first week (Reloaded's "Wednesday" isn't counted in the first week).

And I disagree on Nemo and Incredibles. I think teens just as well as kids are likely to see it. The hype for Incredibles around my high school at the time was surprisingly intense. Much moreso than it was for Shrek 2. Of course, that may just be a local thing, but I was always under the impression that Pixar's demo split between kids and teens was about even.

Most important thing is how good the movie is ;)

You need both. :)

And adults aren't so shabby of an audience either. A movie that hits all demographics has the best chance to succeed.

Both of course, but teens are the most important because:

They have direct sources of disposable income.
They tend to be more stupid and spend their $ less wisely.

Teens will abandon a movie after OW. Kids will see a movie over and over at the cinema, also dragging in the parents. Kids are probably a harder audience to win though.

I agree, teens have a much shorter attention span than tykes. If I liked a movie, I used to watch it over and over again (I must've seen Burton's Batman around 100 times), now I can barely bring myself to watch a film twice.

depends on the film.

if its a raunchy comedy, then teenagers. if its jimmy nutron, kids. if its scooby doo, neither.

coming from a theatre standpoint...

we hate tenn movies...why ? because they dont buy much from the concession stand, and that is where the theatre makes its profit...no its not from the $10 tickets that all goes to the studio...its all from concession

Kids movies the kids will cry and always make the mommy buy them something and since the mom is already in line she usually gets a drink and some candy...

so from a money standpoint a pure kid movie is 100 times better than a pure teen movie..

but

if you are talking only attendance teens are probably a little better just because they will come and watch any piece of crap

I thought the studios get only half of what you do at the box office.

Kids easily. Not only do they usually need adults to accompany them (extra tix= extra $$$) but usually they are more apt to see a movie more than once in theaters. Plus, reviews matter half as much as they do with any other audience because if a kid likes the premise, they're gonna want to see it no matter what. There's more but those points are the ones that immediately popped into my head

How it looks to me. Kids movies and adult movies can be profitable, but to get a real smash you want one that appeals also to teens, they are sort of like the swing voters in an election.

It's a close call. Kids bring in the parents, which means more money, but the teenage audience is a varied demographic and it's a good bet that if you target a movie at teens, it will do well no matter how crappy it is. (See: Big Momma's House 2, When a Stranger Calls)

Teenagers, because they set the tone for trends.. Which young kids try to emulate...

But a kids movie seems a sure pull, when there is low competiton.. Every week could use a new release for kids...

BMH2 actually skewed to older women.
