It's not impossible. It depends on a number of unpredictable factors. Like how many people go to see it.

Would someone like to fill me in on when Pirates of the Caribbean apparently became a phenomenon? The kind of thing you remember twenty years after the fact?

The same thing could be said about Spider-man and Shrek 2 (especially Shrek 2). And yet the latter is number three on the domestic chart. And let's not forget that Shrek 2 and Pirates 2 have a lot of similar traits...breakout original WOM family hits that sold MASSIVE DVDs. I know 500 sounds crazy, but c'mon, nobody predicted 400 for Shrek 2, and look how that turned out.
I'm so in, btw. Not that you needed me to tell you.

To make a prediction this crazy, BJ has to have some inside information.
I suspect he is going to buy 50 million tickets himself.
So Im in!

I had to go with "maybe". I think it'll do better than the first and be number one this year, but I just don't know if it's fiscally possible for ANY movie to make that much domestically in the US at this point in time.
BUT... I know it'll do GREAT.
Someone mentioned Shrek 2. Well, remember that the two men writing Pirates of the Caribbean--Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio--are in part responsible (various degrees) for such great movies (not necessarily blockbusters, but entertaining nonetheless) as Mask of Zorro, Road to El Dorado, Shrek, Shrek 2, Aladdin, and of course the first PotC (even though Wolpert and that other guy first wrote on it, the Two T's did most of the work to make it what it was). Oh, and National Treasure.
So, yeah, I've every confidence that PotC2 will blow away all the other films this year, but I just don't know if it's *quite* possible for it to make 500m+. (although it sure doesn't seem to have any real competition for the first month or so)

If Sith couldn't do it, POTC2 can't.

Had anybody else made that prediction, I would told them to stay off drugs. But BJ is naturally an "optimistic" person. His predictions are always ambitious. So it is normal.

If everyone is bringing up Shrek 2, you might as well bring up Spider-man 2 as well...
