What didn't go right with Robert de Niro's '80s films?

Post subject:  What didn't go right with Robert de Niro's '80s films?
With exceptions to a few successful films like RAGING BULL and THE UNTOUCHABLES, how did movies, including critical-success ones, starring Robert de Niro (like BRAZIL and ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA), fail to approach more audience than they achieved at best as they could? Here is his filmography of his 1980's movies (including successful ones):

Midnight Run and The Mission were decent hits I think.

Midnight Run is one of my favourite Deniro films.

Mine too.

This was also one of Martin Brest's greatest classics, before he that dreck of a film called Gigli.

Oh yeah! I forgot Midnight Run was successful although it grossed $8 mil. more than its budget ($30 mil.) But no source for budget of The Mission as it grossed $17 mil.

Brazil is weird. Brilliant, no doubt, but wierd. I guess it didn't appeal to a wide audience :sad:

Once Upon A Time In America's release version was a mess: they recut it from Leone's 3.5 hours to a 2-hour film playing essentially in chronological order and, as I understand it, without the film's superb score. I haven't seen this cut (nor would I ever want to) but I gather from what I've heard and read that the US-version of the film made no sense whatsoever and, given what they did to it, that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's seen the proper thing. From there I suppose it was doomed at the box office for obvious reasons.

Um, BRAZIL was weird, but the US cut was weirder than intl. version. That's why it didn't appeal much

So how can we persuade the studios into re-releasing these bombed movies ever released in the cinematic film history?

Though I can't be sure, I would be interested in knowing the original release schedules
and what films were playing against DeNiro's in their day.

Btw, Martin Brest's first classic was "Going in Style". Highly recommended and nearly forgotten over at the imdb board.

one thing to mention is that in all of those films, deniro is the lead except for the untouchables.


i would have to say that is not his movie... its either costner's or connery's... my pick would be the scot.

What about BRAZIL? He wasn't in the lead, he appeared in a few scenes

that maybe is true, but i wouldnt know... ive never seen that movie.
