Ice Age was a reasonable-sized hit in the UK, though it paled in comparison to offerings from Disney/Pixar or Dreamworks. Fox's last entry, Robots was very dissapointing, with one of the worst grosses for a CGI animited flick so far.

After strong start to 2006, lead by holdovers such as King Kong and solid hits such as Fun With Dick And Jane and Chicken Little, the past few weekends have been pretty ordinary compared to last year when Hitch, Robots and Ring Two dominated the charts.

Expect an easy #1 launch for Ice Age 2 next weekend (April 7th) with an opening weekend around £4m for a finish around £20m.

Ice Age took Germany by storm in 2002 with a total gross only surpassed by one other CGI flick, Nemo and is 3rd highest for a foreign animated flick.

CGI is still strong in Germany with Madagascar outshining ROTS last year and finished as the 2nd highest grosser for the year, behind only HP4. Can lightning strike twice?

Nemo still holds the opening weekend record at $13.3m (2.032m adms.) followed by Shrek 2 at $9m (1.273m adms.) and Madagascar $8.6m (1.226m adms.). The original Ice Age opened to 1.465m adms., which translates to a $10m+ opening by today's standards. Ice Age 2 could hit 1.5m-1.75m adms. on opening and end total around 7.3m adms. (~$50m)

2006's has been pretty dull so far with Memoirs of a Geisha ($13.5m+) the major standout. Ice Age 2 will surely beat Memoir's $2.6m opening with a Madagascar rivalling $3.5m. From there, it could hit anywhere between $15-$20m.

Animated flicks have performed very consistently in Australia, thanks to clever positioning before or during the school holidays. Ice Age 2 is no exception.

All high-profile CGI flicks have past the AUD$20m mark in Australia, Ice Age the only entrant from a non Pixar/Dreamworks studio. Ice Age 2 lands next weekend (April 6) and should make mince meat of international bomb The Shaggy Dog.

CGIs don't normally have powerful openings in Australia, it's the legs which matter. Ice Age 2 should be the flick to open above AUD$3m in 2006 with a $4.5m opening and $25m finish.

Ice Age's opening was one of the largest openings back in 2002, but a lot has changed since then with the Top 10 now dominated by everything from comic hits (Spiderman, F4, X2) to fantasy (HP, ROTS and Narnia) and action blocks (War of the Worlds, TDAT).

CGI has always flourished in Mexico with everything from Shrek 2 to Madagascar (2005's 3rd largest grosser) all finding success. Ice Age was the original CGI blockbuster and is still ranked 7th All-Time and 2nd for a CGI flick behind Shrek 2.

The current opening record belongs to Shrek 2 at $9.9m, while i don't think Ice Age 2 can reach such heights, look for an opening around $8m and an end total around $25m.

I predict $655 million worldwide for the movie. Germany should be either its biggest or second biggest international market.

Ice Age: The Meltdown burned through the international marketplace this weekend, grossing an estimated $43.4m through Fox International on 4,571 screens in 29 territories.

Records toppled around the world as the animated sequel stormed to number one in every territory, mirroring its dominance in North America where it took an estimated $70.5m.

The weekend result does not include $4.1m in previews from the UK, where Ice Age: The Meltdown is expected to generate mighty numbers when it opens proper next weekend.

Meanwhile Basic Instinct 2, released through various distributors, generated $10.2m on 2,956 screens in 29 markets, while Universal's Inside Man added $8.8m in 1,772 sites in 27 territories through UIP for $22.5m.

Ice Age: The Meltdown set new industry opening records in four territories in Latin America, taking $8.3m on 1,083 screens in Mexico, $1.2m on 134 in Argentina, $531,000 on 80 in Venezuela, and $278,000 on 30 in Ecuador.

Results in Europe were also impressive. Russia led the rampage as the picture produced $7.6m on 460 and Fox's biggest ever opening day and the second biggest opening day for a US picture.

Spain generated $6.2m on 450 for the second biggest industry debut for an animated title, while Poland confirmed its status as a booming market with $1.6m on 107 that was Fox International's biggest ever animated debut and the industry's second biggest animated debut ever.

Holland generated $1.3m on 189 for the industry's second biggest animated debut ever, while the same amount in Belgium on 120 delivered the biggest industry animated debut of all time.

Sweden's $1.3m on 159 and Finland's $442,000 on 56 in Finland were sufficient to secure new industry records for an animated debut. In the Asia/Pacific region Ice Age: The Meltdown generated $1.2m on 178 in Taiwan, $783,000 on 114 in the Philippines, and $639,000 on 55 in Singapore.

Brazil, Puerto Rico and Uruguay generated all-time opening marks for Fox International, grossing $3.9m on 507, $1.1m on 84, and $61,000 on 15 respectively.

Elsewhere Chile and Peru produced $1.2m on 70 and $693,000 on 99 respectively for the industry's second biggest debut ever, while Portugal opened on $375,000 on 66.

Colombia produced $822,000 on 120, South Africa generated $686,000 on 89, Malaysia produced $377,000 on 65, and Central America produced $759,000 on 163.

I join the 600 + Club. Ice Age seems to have become very very popular. And as Lecter said its gonna be mega huge (if things go normal ways) in the German speaking Countrys of Europe (Germany Switzerland Austria).

I am pretty sure Day Watch (Dnevnoy Dozor) opened quite bigger in Russia. I mean, it made $5,610,722 in its 2nd weekend...

Mark my words down on this:

Ice Age: The Meltdown will make $700+ million worldwide and will most likely become the #1 or #2 movie of the year worldwide.

As I said, it will be extremely strong in Germany for instance. The pre-sales are incredible for an animated film. It's the biggest pre-sold movie since Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire here. Double features and previews were held all over the country yesterday. I see an opening of 1,800,000+ admissions as entirely possible here, probably even bigger than that. It should clear $400 million internationally with ease, but I would not rule out $500 million.

Yes my apologies, my Russian chart is incomplete - you are right Day Watch opened to $12m+ in CIS on opening weekend....minus $1 or $2m and it would still be above $10m.

There's also another movie, Bumer, Film Vtoroy (Bimmer, Part Two) which hit $8m in CIS, so that movie would be on par with Ice Age 2.

It opened to less than $8 million, I mean it was out for 4 days only and made $3.8 million in three of those days. I doubt it made over $4 million in its opening day. Its total gross is currently at about $12 million and won't get much further. With an opening of $8 million, it definitely would have gotten over $20 million. Something's fishy there. I'd put Ice Age 2 as #1 on your list.

I was wondering...do you have an all-time list of total grosses in CIS/Russia? Ice Age: The Meltdown will probably finish in the all-time Top 5 there, probably as #3, behind Company 9 and Day Watch.

First tracking in Germany has Ice Age 2 going towards around 2,000,000-2,400,000 admissions this weekend.

That'd be one of the five biggest openings ever and would give it a good chance at outdoing Finding Nemo. I am almost 100% certain that it will be the #1 movie of the year in Germany now. I see 8,000,000+ admissions.

$750 million worldwide is getting more and more likely.

Well, the $4m missing for Bumer doesn't necessarily have to be made on opening day.....it could've been boosted by previews (which is quite common in Russia).

And i guess, those who wanted to see the movie did in the first week....because look at what happened afterwards...

Hmmm, still these holds appear rather weird to me. Usually local productions tend to have good legs in Russia.

By the way, Arch, did you notice that the trend in Russia has changed somewhat again? The Hollywood blockbusters are not as big anymore as they used to be around 2003 when T3, The Matrix Revolutions and ROTK all made $12+ million. Last year, War of the World barely made it to $10 million, I think, while all other Hollywood blockbusters fell short of that as well, including Harry Potter, King Kong and Narnia. The local films, however, are on a constant rise. Day Watch passed $30 million and the WoM was pretty good (and since I have seen it, it IS atually a better movie than the sub-par Night Watch). Once the third movie comes out next year, I expect it to pass $40 million.

While I can't give you a definate All-Time List for CIS, i can give you the totals as they stand before each movie was bumped outside the Top 10.

Incredible that the top 4 productions are local ones with more to join soon probably. It will take Ice Age 2 less than three weeks to become the biggest Hollywood movie ever there.

I will explain. No Hollywood blockbusters get so HUGE marketing campaign, as all local films always get. If the grosses of russian hits are reliable, nearly all of these movies are commersial bombs because of megacosts (mammoth marketing campaign + rather big production budgets).

Night Watch, Day Watch and Turkish Gambit were produced by Channel One, the main CIS TV channel (200-million audience). The marketing campaign was super-extra-massive and the channel wasted its own advertising time.

And now some reliable numbers. Accounts of Turkish Gambit were checked by russian auditors from State Chamber of Accounting. Production + marketing costs are $5.5 mln. Costs of wasted advertising time are at least another $8.6 mln. (573 minutes), so total costs are $14.1 mln. Gambit made $18 mln at the box-office, 50% went to theaters, another 10% went to distributor. Channel One got income of $7.2 mln and wasted $14.1 mln - terrible loss, isn't it? Night Watch and Day Watch are of the same case, but the marketing campaign of Day Watch was much, much, much greater than both Turkish Gambit and Night Watch.

Company 9, another russian hit, was produced by another russian TV channel, STS. Production budget is $9 mln. and marketing costs are uncountable because of massive advertising in nearly all russian media. It is also a commersial failure.

P.S. About Bumer 2 - it wasn't produced by a TV channel, marketing campaign was not so massive. The movie had limited appeal and was also pretty crap.

However, I don't think they are all failures, otherwise they wouldn't keep producing them. If Night Watch was a failure, why making a sequel? If Day Watch was another failure why making another sequel? I am sure they got a lot of money from worldwide distribution and selling licenses for those films.

Well, in US it may be logical. In Russia it may be not.
Why keep producing failures? I guess the answer is: in order to support and protect local movie industry, attract customers and occupy the market. It is still not completely market economy in Russia, the state has a great influence. Without the help of the state the local movie industry will never win the battle against Hollywood. The state now helps the russian movie industry to grow, gives money ($60+ mln. per year), no matter if it is profitable or not, because there's a plan for the russian movie industry: to reach and maintain 30% of the total yearly box-office. Did you know, that the Russian government wanted even to set quota for non-russian movies?

About failures. For example, the state company Roskinoprokat produced a lot of movies and covered less than 20% of costs in 2002-2005, one of its movies, "Kino pro Kino" grossed only 1/61 of the budget.

I am pretty sure they did. Night Watch sold very well in foreign countries. It was quite a hit in Germany and did decently in many other territorries as well. It made $33,586,659 worldwide, so only half of its gross came from Russia. Add in the DVD sales, TV licences etc. I am very sure that Night Watch was a hit.

Anyhow, how big is the DVD market in Russia. As Lecter said, i'm sure the DVD sales and increased exposure to the stations would more than counter this loss in the short term.

The Russian market is seeing so much growth, the grosses of even the foreign blockbusters have climbed closer to the $10m....surely, the infrastructure will continue to build and perhaps we'll see the cost vs. profit plane levelling off soon...

Ice Age 2 set to dominate international in weekend #2

Fox International's Ice Age 2: The Meltdown is closing in on $100m as it prepares to open in 20 territories heading into its second weekend.

The animated sequel has amassed more than $64.2m by Thursday and is now opening in France on Apr 5, Australia and Germany on Apr 6, and the UK on Apr 7.

The picture has already taken more than $6.2m in previews in the UK and Fox International executives will be looking to emulate the original's $4.3m paid opening on 423 screens back in spring 2002.

By way of comparison, Ice Age opened on $7.6m on 794 screens in Germany, generated $3.2m in its first week on 651 screens in France, and took $1.3m from 298 theatres in Australia. Openings in South Korea and Japan are set to follow on Apr 20 and 22.
