Final Destination 3 is about $300,000 from $50 million total. Yay.

Weak PTA for Block Party.

Wow, Brokeback increased 10%. nice. Hopefully with some big award wins tonight, it can get back to 4-5 million next weekend...

Capote's increase was especially impressive

According to Mojo, Madea came in with 13 million

Boring for all openers. None of them will top $35M.
Aquamarine had a good internal multiplier.

Nice increases for Brokeback and Capote. Brokeback will have over $80M going into next weekend. But i think the limit is $90M.

Capote's total is strong.

Final Destination 3 and Curious George will pass $50M during the week. Fantastic.

Panther could reach $90M.

What's the precedent for Oscar nominees on the actual weekend of the Oscars? Increases or slight decreases?

it's really too bad that Brokeback couldn't keep it's number of screens up, because key wins tonight could have done wonders for it during the week next week, but the soonest it can expand is Friday...

-56.7% drop for Madea....expected. $48,099,000 After 2 weeks is fantastic.

Block Party was the only opener with a good PTA. Yeugh.
$48.5M is the absolute max for WASC.

Eww! The top 10 is 25.4% under 2005, and 38.8% under 2004. Granted TPOTC effect is taking place now. But being that under 2005 the studios won't be able to blame TPOTC.

Is anoyne really surprised by this, though? The Pacifier opened to $30M and Be Cool opened to $23M last year, and not one of the new releases even hit $12M this year.

I thought that the studios would learn that March is now the strongest month of the year outside of the summer, and Nov/Dec. It can often compete with August as well, to rank up in the top 6 months of the year (Ex. 3 $30 m + openers in 2005, 5 $20 m + and 3 $30 m + openers in 2002). Then there's 2004, where Passion made $194 m in March alone. The studios are underutilizing this very profitable month. Next weekend should be different, but this year in particular, April seems to be the strong month compared to March in terms of studio film placements, with Ice Age 2 likely making 90% of its gross in April, and not March.

 People actually thought Block Party would do 14m+ That sucks though, 6m? I was thinking it could get closer to 10m, just not much interest in that type of movie. It's been getting great reviews and I really like Dave Chappelle but I have almost 0 interest in seeing this.

Huh, most people probably had no idea that Chapelle was even out, let alone did they care.

I predicted $17 million for it because of the The Original Kings of Comedy comparison.

Too bad Munich couldn't capatilize as much as Brokeback or Capote.

Nice to see that The Pink Panther probably WON'T pass $100 million.

It'll probably top out at about $85-90 million. Which, while hardly awesome, is still a nice little package for Sony. I'd still expect to see a sequel somewhere down the line.

The only thing though, it wasn't a standup show, or even a documentary, it was a crappy shot film, Kings of Comedy also had the Spike Lee name attached. I never thought it would do over 7 million.

But yea, it sucks that not even one film broke out this week, luckily we should have three solid openers next week.

Wow. Capote has yet to even make it to the top 12 of any weekend, and yet will get to $30 m +.
