Another year, another video game adaptation...But you know what? This one actually looks like it could turn out pretty good, especially considering the talent involved. The director Christopher Gans has already shown that he can handle the genre well with The Brotherhood of the Wolg. The screenwriter Roger Avary worked on movies like Rules of Attraction and Pulp Fiction. The first images and the first "teaser" suggest that this will be a full-blown atmospheric creepy horror. The movie's biggest competition will be Scary Movie 4's 2nd weekend, but since it will be the only big horror movie by the time of its release, it will still find its own audience. As Doom has proven earlier this year, the populairty of the game alone assures no success. Silent Hill, however, doesn't seem to rely on the game's success, but is trying to be a movie of its own. I think that will help. Moreover, The Amityville Horror has done pretty well with its April release date last year.

Nonetheless, here are some comparisons from the video game adaptations genre:

[table][row]Movie[col]Opening Weekend[col]Theatres[col]PTA[col]Total Gross[col]Multiplier[row]Resident Evil: Apocalypse[col]$23,036,273[col]3,284[col]$7,014[col]$51,201,453[col]2.22[row]Resident Evil[col]$17,707,106[col]2,528[col]$7,004[col]$40,119,709[col]2.27[row]Doom[col]$15,488,870[col]3,044[col]$5,088[col]$28,048,600[col]1.81[/table]

I expect Silent Hill to have somewhat better legs than these three, though.

My early predictions:

Opening weekend - $18.1 million

Total gross - $46 million

The teaser was freaky....very effective. Looks like one of the best of the bunch from the start of next year (Along with Hills, Stranger, FD3)

Unfortunately Doom left a bad taste in people's mouth so I think video game adaptions will be affected. Im not going to make that mistake again and highball video games.

15 million/40 million

If it's a good adaptation 17/52.

If it's a bad one 14/32.

I'm hoping SH will be good. I love video games, they're so creepy and have great storylines. I like the story for the second part the most. The dead wife sending letters to her husband. Sends chills down my spine every time.

I know that unlike most adaptations of its kind, it has a very promising director, a good screenwriter and a chilling teaser.

Thing is, the movie is not going to look like a video game movie from everything that I can tell. My prediction will depend on the theatrical teaser/theatrical trailer, but for now I'd say it's a movie ripe with opening potential, although it could be hurt by so many horror movies in the proceeding months.

But no one saw Doom, so I don't think it will be affected. :)

Is it just me, or is this film look fucking good. April can't come soon enough. Everything is right, buzz, trailer, advertising.

34/75 Highest grossing April 2006 release. Yes, Scary Movie 4 will not be.

I predict 12 Million Opening and at best, 27-30 Million Domestically.. This is a movie that will appeal strictly to game lovers only who are familiar with the title.. Everyone else will stay home and pass on it.. I don't see this performing any better than any other Game Adaptation made into a film, including Uwe Boll's attempts, so it's inevitable DVD release date will be quick..

Nah, the gamers will be there, but don't forget the (judging by this years releases UW2, HOSTEL, FD3, STRANGER) horror crowd who turn out, obviously, in droves...

Fantastic teaser, a built in game fanbase, and a horror look should allow this one an opening in the high teens. Depends on the WOM, but it could approach 50m
