Me and my gay self are uber excited for this....
Basically, it's next year's Holiday musical based on a broadway show.
Official Site w/ Teaser Trailer
Starring:
Beyonce
Jamie Foxx
Danny Glover
Eddie Murphy
and JENNIFER HUDSON FROM AMERICAN IDOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (most robbed contestant EVER)

Directed by Bill Condon (Chicago)
Let's see...this will be popular with the middle-age black demographic, gay demographic, and not much else IMO (maybe some Idol fans, Beyonce fanboys, and Jamie Fox fangirls) I don't know what we compare this too...not as much appeal as Chicago, a different fanbase than The Producers, plus a much larger production and marketing campaign than Rent. I think this could be pretty big though, I just can't figure out which demographic could make it big. Expect a lot of Oscar Buzz (Director, Actor (Foxx), Supporting Actor (Glover), Supporting Actress (Hudson), Picture?, Costume, etc.)

Oh, and I know how early this is for a film like this, but I was in shock that the teaser was already out, so might as well...

Oscar buzz? I mean the fact that three touted musical adaptations have recently failed at sparking Oscar buzz (The Phantom of the Opera, Rentand The Producers) should be enough to tell everyone that a musical adaptation does not equal Oscar buzz.

Yep, but this one has an Oscar winner screenwriter and an Oscar winner actor, something the others didn´t.

That must count for something.

Jarhead had an Oscar winning director and the same actor. And the musicals were arguably all more popular.

Yep, but you compared this movie to other three musicals. I was just stating that this one has more oscar pedigree.

And I don´t think "Chicago" was most popular than "Phantom", "Rent" or "The producers", and look how that turned out, Oscar-wise. BTW, isn´t it funny that "Producers" has been out for just a few days and we all are mostly sure of a) No oscar nominations and b) Box office bomb. More tragic than funny, actually.

Well, I would still contend that Chicago WAS more well-known than Dreamgirls. In fact, I have never heard of Dreamgirls before and I have always known the other four.

I don't know if The Producers is a bomb (never said it), but the PTA isn't encouraging. And less than 55% at RT pretty much assure no big Oscar noms.

This one might have pedigree, but in fact it looks more awful than any of the other ones. The screenwriter doesn't matter much anyway, since Akiva Goldsman wrote Batman & Robin and A Beautiful Mind, meaning that while he could win Osacar for one, he could still suck big big time at another.

yes, but Bill Condon, IMO, hasn´t sucked yet. He wrote "Gods and monsters", "Kinsey" and "Chicago". The Akiva Goldsman comparison is a bit offensive. ;)

Oh, I thought everybody believed "The producers" to be a bomb after this weekend. I, for one, do. I´d be surprised if it does much more than "Rent", and in no way I think It will surpass "Phantom"

I don't think The Producers' fanbase is as obsessed as Rent's, thus a low-ish opening PTA doesn't surprise me much, really. I think it will surpass Rent with no problem.

It's not a bomb, probably a disappointment, just like Rent.

Funnily enough, these two make Phantom look really good now.

It'll be huge unless beyonce manages to kill her career sometime in the next few months. Never underestimate tween pull, number 1, a good soundtrack, nostalgia for the music era, and music biopics just keep getting bigger and bigger. Decent cast, I see this nearing 100 million if it can get a normal critical reception (70's at rt).

Bumpity Bump

With one theater charging $25 a ticket, I wouldn't be too surprised if this became the second live-action film ever to have a PTA above $100,000. At the very least I think it can get $75,000. I'll go with $92,000 for now.

After that, this is hard to predict, as it opens in 800 theaters on Christmas and is suppose to go wide in January. For now, I think it at least looks likely to make $100M when it's all said and done.
