According to Al Gore, the estimated theater count for this is 3984.
http://datelinehollywood.com/archives/2 ... l-warming/
He also is against it, which is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard this week.
Also
http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/30/news/co ... mermovies/
"Harrigan agrees that these two flicks should be hits. He said he finds it hard to imagine "Cars" generating anything less than $250 million in U.S. box office sales"
Just putting that out there.
This is setting up to be a big hit. I've been seeing tons of ads for it(and surprsing a lot with tie-ins) and it looks great.

Magnus, do you sense a lot of buzz for this outside of the Internet? Sure, the new trailer is pretty funny, and I'm not one to bet against Pixar, but I'm having trouble believing that kids will grasp onto the talking cars idea. Talking Toys were funny, and animals are always a safe bet, but vehicles? I guess we'll have to see. I'm wondering if this might be Pixar's first real disappointment - meaning, just a decent CGI opening (say $50M) with average legs.

All I know is that I've heard my friends talk about it, and that's rare for a CGI flick. The last time people my age were even talking/intrested in a CGI flick was Incredibles.
The kids I'm sure are going to come for sure. Whether this is a big hit depends on the non-kids demogrpahics, and I think the non-kids are intrested in it.

Man, Gore's gotta shut his yap. He's against movies which depict stuff that has not been "demonstrated by scientists from accredited universities?" Maybe he can get Tipper to slap one of her patented warning labels on Star Wars.
I don't think that the actual content of Cars is going to matter, as long as it's not overwhelmingly bad. Parents take their kids to "the movies" and don't decide what movie to see until they walk into the theatre. This is kiddie, with the Pixar name. That should be enough. The only thing that could kill this is bad WOM.
And even then, the Nascar crowd won't let bad WOM stop them.

That article can't be true. It's too funny. Just check out these golden quotes:
Al Gore wrote: What kind of a message does it send to our children to teach them that cars, which account for 38.2348% of the past century’s global warming, are heroes? I call on the Walt Disney company to either re-animate this film so that the cars are all villains, or to recall all prints and instead fill the 3,984 theaters set to play ‘Cars’ with a more socially responsible movie. Perhaps a documentary about global warming that USA Today called ‘illuminating, fascinating, and sometimes frightening.' Quote: The former Vice President condemned “Monsters Inc.†for “promoting a radical anti-science agenda that teaches kids there is an alternate world where monsters live.
“It’s dangerous for children to grow up thinking about – or ‘imagining’ – things that have not been demonstrated by scientists from accredited universities,†he added. Quote: A spokesperson for Pixar said that she believed Gore was simply bitter because he unsuccessfully auditioned to provide the voice of “Dory†in “Finding Nemo,†a role that eventually went to Ellen Degeneres.
Wow.

I thought CARS would be the b.o. king of the Summer...but that changed once I saw the new POTC trailer. Possible though.
Still, I expect this to be a FINDING NEMO style monster, making $300M+. Gave a whole diatrabe on that on page 1 or 2, I think.

DP07 is usually dead-on and usually I agree with him. Not with this, though (didn't you initially predict $150 million for Nemo?).
60/270.
Cars might not have quite the appeal of superheroes, but I think people are underestimating the appeal this will have to the NASCAR crowd. Plus it's Pixar.

I think this is going to do at least Incredibles numbers, the marketplace is missing a massive ($200million+) kids flick this summer, by car's release weekend OTH will be doing what? $10million? I think families will flock to this:
$65 million opening
$280 million final

No! I had 70m/320m when many were asking "What's Finding Nemo?"

one little tidbit.
i'm not sure how happy nascar crowd will be with this film
[spoil]there is really very little racing in this film. only in the beginning and only at the end. there are more references here to stuff like formula 1 than nascar. at one moment, this cute little italian car even makes fun of nascar[/spoil]

Yes - I once predicted this as No.1 for the summer - even though I think POTC2 will take that honour now - this will be close and the only one to challenge POTC2.
$75.3m Opening
$265-$275m Total

We have waaay too many Pixar doubters, that's all I've got to say. And this shocks me, considering the track record. Pixar has become a brand name, much like Disney. It's a kids film, opening in the summer, has gotten great early reviews, and it's Pixar. I didn't even need the great early reviews to realize that Cars is going to be a good film, because it's P-I-X-A-R. Period.
Opening Weekend: $68 million
Total: $285 million
Another huge Pixar success.
PEACE, Mike.

Pixar is the most genius company EVER!
I mean... they got people to LOVE their movies... and now they know that they should only release one a year... They're increasing demand by not having them close together.
