Wow, very impressive numbers all around. Makes me very optimistic that it will have a good increase here when it expands next week.

Archangel, do you think it can beat the original in the UK?

In US$ it has a chance, but due to the generall belief that the sequel is not as good as the original, it will drop off slightly more overall. The original did gross 42m pounds, and i think the sequel can at least do 35m pounds, that would equate to around $65m in today's exchange rate. The one to really watch for is Love Actually's 36,800,418 pounds.

So anything between $60-70m is achievable IMO.

BTW - next week will be a breather before The Incredibles arrive the week after.

In Australia, it will blitz the original in US$, but unlike the UK, it actually has a good chance at matching the originals AUD$22m. Both Troy (23,447,161) and TDAT (20,138,137) finished above $20m, BJ2 should do the same.

THere's also one other major market opening this weekend, Netherlands on 110 screens (blockbuster territory, i.e. TDAT, Spiderman). No indication as yet how it will go on Opening Weekend, but with a theatre count like that, you can't expect any less than $1m opening.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

Bridget Jones was really a megablockbuster over there, so it's not as easy for the sequel to outgross it as it should be on the domestic side. After all, how much could the DVD have allowed the fanbase to grow in the UK? Over here, I'm certain that it has happened to an extent.

It's hard to guage DVD support, unless its something like The Matrix which was among the first DVD blockbuster......and that set up the sequel nicely.

But judging from opening day figures alone, it's quite evident that this will at least match the original in worldwide takings, thanks to the exchange rate.

More importantly, it should do alot better in the domestic market. First Day previews speak for themselves. BJ2 will easily open more than $25m next week......with $100m a possibility.

'Incredibles' Ices 'Polar' at Box Office

Sun Nov 14, 2004 02:16 PM ET
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtm ... ID=6806418

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," Universal Pictures' sequel to the hit 2001 film about a hapless "singleton" played by Renee Zellweger, grabbed the No. 4 slot with $8.9 million. However, the film played in just 530 theaters, while "Incredibles" was in 3,933 theaters, "Polar Express" in 3,650 theaters and "Sunset" in 2,819 theaters

Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said the studio opened the film in limited release to help build word of mouth and would expand it to over 2,000 sites next weekend. Not surprisingly, women made up about three-quarters of the audience, Universal said. The studio is a unit of NBC Universal, which is controlled by General Electric Co .

"Bridget," rated R, played in the top 100 markets and drew a 74% femme aud, but, as with "Sunset," most were over age 30.

U distrib toppertopper Nikki Rocco said the early limited run was a chance to jumpstart the sequel: "We took advantage of an opportunity to build word of mouth by counterprogramming the weekend."

"Bridget's" $8.9 million weekend, which averaged $16,705 per engagement, is a "performance that's very indicative of a hit franchise."

DOMESTIC: Bridget Jones vs. Love Actually vs. OTHERS

Estimates put BJ2 at a strong:

#4 Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Uni. $8,854,000 - 530 - $16,705 $8,854,000 $70 / - 1

BJ2 has the same release pattern as Love Actually which also had a week's worth of previews in 576 theatres. LA made $6,886,080 in its first preview weekend.

p/v 1 (Fri)- Bridget Jones 2 - $3,032,000 vs. Love Actually $2,073,600
p/v 2 (Sat) - Bridget Jones 2 - $3,397,000 vs. Love Actually $2,862,720
p/v 3(Sun) - Bridget Jones 2 - $2,425,000 vs. Love Actually $1,949,760

Wk. p/v - Bridget Jones 2 - $8,854,000 vs. Love Actually $6,886,080

In comparison, the original BJ did the following with a semi wide opening weekend in 1611 theatres:

Day 1 - Bridget Jones' Diary - $4,042,500
Day 2 - Bridget Jones' Diary - $4,113,500
Day 3 - Bridget Jones' Diary - $2,457,000
= $10,733,933

So far so good for BJ2, and it should clear Love Actually's 7-Day gross of $10,163,670 before adding 1500+ theatres next weekend.

INTERNATIONAL: Bridget has 'Reason' to celebrate o'seas

By DON GROVES
http://www.variety.com/article/VR111791 ... Id=13&cs=1

The frame's champ, "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" wooed an estimated $26.7 million on just 973 playdates in six territories, posting a sockosocko $27,440 average per engagement.

The Zellweger/Hugh Grant/Colin Firth headlinerheadliner amassed a projected $19.1 million on 496 situations in the U.K., including $5.9 million in previews, accounting for 54% of the market. That reps the biggest weekend ever in BlightyBlighty for Universal and producers Working Title, beating "Love Actually's" $11.1 million, and, sans sneaks, it was UIP's second best behind "Shrek 2." In pounds, the sequel's debut was 85% ahead of the original "Bridget Jones's Diary."

The romantic comedy fetched an estimated $4.3 million on 256 in Australia, 125% up on the predecessor in U.S. dollars, also a Working Title high and Universal's second biggest behind "The Lost World: Jurassic Park."

Singleton's saga pulled in a projected $1.5 million on 66 in Poland (200% ahead of the first edition); $1.1 million on 107 in Holland (130% bigger); $410,000 in Hungary (200% better); and $108,000 in Croatia.

"These results confirm the global appeal of 'Bridget Jones' and we look forward to the rollout into the rest of the world over the next few weeks," UIP prez Andrew Cripps said Sunday.

Talk about exceding expectations, the UK figure is absolutely amazing, and guess what, it is this year's 3rd largest opening, behind only HP3 and Shrek 2.....and above the likes of Spiderman 2, FOTR and Phantom Menace.

Australia was slightly below my AUD$6.5m prediction with AUD$5.6m, but let's see if Actuals tomorrow can put it above the original's opening take with previews at $5.8m

The real shock came in Poland, it's just on the outskirts of the Top 5 All-time, comparable to TTT/Reloaded and had a stronger opening than TPOTC, HP3 and Troy.

Overall, brilliant start and i've got a feeling actuals tomorrow might be higher than estimates, they usually are :D

Go Bridget :Drink: :Jump:

Yeah, about SKYISFALLING, the only past data is in the archives, and it's yearly charts, but no access to past weekends is available, however, i'm almost certain that it's an upcoming feature.

Fingers cross, i'm in the process of overhauling all figures for the UK with pounds as well......so that feature would be really helpful. :D

BTW - The Incredibles also had a great weekend as well, it's openings are on par if not better than Nemo's. $500m could be possible.

This film is certainly going to have a very profitable run. It will be interesting to see how it holds up next week, with the possible bad word of mouth.

I believe it will have excellent word-of-mouth. I saw it yesterday and, while acknowledging that it's very slight and that the main character has basically become a cartoon, it was very funny and entertaining. It's definitely a crowd pleaser in every sense of the word.

$100M+ U.S. final guaranteed.

Any guesses on U.K. final?

I wouldn't be too surprised if it holds quite well actually......for a movie which opens this strongly it could go either way.....

As stated earlier, it should have a breather in the UK with no new biggies until The Incredibles the following week. So the next 2 weeks will be all BJ2.

In Australia it's going to be much harder because both The Grduge and Polar Express opens......with PExpress poor debut in the US, i don't expect a big opening.....

Well' see, i've got this pegged at $200m Intl. and $100m Domestic. :D

$55m in UK is definately garaunteed i think.......SM2 opened slightly lower and despite average-poor legs, it still managed US$50m with today's exchange rate.

I'm expecting anywhere between $60-70m.....with $65m likely. :D

Bridget Jones is angry with George Bush!:

http://www.newkerala.com/news-daily/new ... s&id=42699

[Hollywood News]: London, Nov 15: Bridget Jones star Renee Zellweger has severely criticised US president George Bush for his plans to outlaw gay marriages.

"It's hard to find love in this world and people should love each other. Trying to make it illegal for people to love each other is outrageous," the Metro newspaper quoted her as saying.

"I have a lot of gay friends who have been raising children. They have beautiful families that are far more stable than many heterosexual couples I know," she added.(ANI)

------------

Bridget finds love, but Renee is single

http://athens-olympics-2004.newkerala.c ... s&id=42539

Hollywood News]: London, Nov 14 : Although the character, Bridget Jones, may have found true love after tottering on "the Edge of Reason", actress Renee Zellweger, who gained weight to play Bridget, is out of love.

Oscar winner Zellweger has parted with her boyfriend of two years, White Stripes singer, Jack White, according to Hello Magazine.

Earlier reports had suggested the couple would marry this Christmas.

However, unlike the neurotic TV journalist Bridget, Zellweger, 35, is undaunted by the world of singletons.

"I don't worry about it because I think you can't predict when you are going to find that ideal someone. I'm not in a hurry. It'll just happen when I'm not expecting it," Zellweger was quoted as saying.
