what is the ratio of in the blue? |

Coasterman2002 wrote: what is the ratio of in the blue? Number of reviews per $1 million gross. So it measures the percentage of people who both watched the movie and reviewed it at Yahoo. The reason we mostly only track it on opening day because the # of factors are the minimum at that time. Here are some of the factors that we noticed affect a ratio: 1. Genre This is the first thing we would think about, and it's been shown that it indeed is a factor. Movies tend to have higher ratio when it attracts more Internet-savvy/oriented audience. For example, kids and elder adults don't normally rush to review a film immediately after they saw it, while the 17-25 age group does a lot more. [table] [row]Animated Movie[col]Ratio[col]Adult-oriented Drama[col]Ratio[col]Date/Teen Movie[col]Ratio [row]Shrek 2 (Wed)[col]97.99[col]Collateral[col]94.06[col]Mean Girls[col]456.86 [row]Madagascar[col]75.71[col]Ladder 49[col]88.40[col]Ice Princess[col]649.90 [row]Scooby Doo 2[col]108.90[col]Man on Fire[col]80.06[col]The Wedding Date[col]302.38 [row]Shark Tale[col]64.47[col]The Terminal[col]80.67[col]The Girl Next Door[col]374.15 [row]Garfield[col]88.39[col]The Interpreter[col]67.03[col]The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Wed)[col]397.58 [row]Polar Express (Friday)[col]97.38[col]The Manchurian Candidate[col]74.36[col]First Daughter[col]632.55 [row]Home on the Range[col]55.49[col]The Ladykillers[col]83.96[col]Raise Your Voice[col]573.50 [/table] 2. Whether it is on Yahoo's Frontpage We discovered this variable late, but it turned out to affect the ratio significantly and consistently. Yahoo updates its front page ad once a day at midnight EST. Sometimes on Friday or Saturday, they place the movie section there, along with pictures and links to the new releases. we see significant jumps in # of reviews per hour once they have the movies on the front page, and it's easy to understand because that increases awareness. Right now we see frontpage = 60-100% jump in ratio. 3. International Release Fits the intuition well too. If a movie is simultaneously released in many countries, it will increase the # of reviews but not affect the domestic gross, so the ratio increases. 4. Grade/Recommendation We observed that once the average user grade drops to a C level or below, the film tends to have a high ratio, because a grade of that level means there are a lot of F's, and although not all F's are fake reviews (i.e. reviews from people who haven't seen the film), a higher majority of them are. Besides fake reviews, low grade also means that it includes more people who didn't normally go online to review it, but felt compelled to review right away here because the movie was just so bad. They had to release their anger before being able to sleep fine. 5. Controversy/Bad Buzz This is somewhat related to the grade, but not necessarily the same. A film with high pre-release controversy such as F9/11 will have a very high ratio, even though the grade average may only be hovering around B- level. Or a film with very heavy bad buzz such as Gigli, Catwoman, and Alexander, which do translate to low grades. In both cases, it means much higher amount of fake reviews and people who felt compelled to review after seeing them. 6. Theater Count/Rating These may not affect the ratio all the time, but they do show effects. When the theater count is low, it means that people who take the effort to search and drive to see it are more devoted to the film instead of casual move-goers and thus more likely to review it immediately. It leads to higher ratio. A more strict rating such as R or NC-17 will have a higher level of sneak-ins and thus increase the percentage of people who didn't pay to watch the film, and it will increase the ratio as well. |

I would have expect Team America to have a monstrous amount of reviews, a little bit like Fahrenheit 9/11. Or maybe it's doing really bad. |

What are the expected ratios? |
Author: | xiayun [ Fri Oct 15, 2004 7:19 pm ] |
Post subject: | |
Team America will finish around 1000-1100 reviews, since I expect it to do well at night. DP convinced me that the ratio will be higher, but I don't think it will be as high as 200. A ratio of 150-170 will give it a 6-7M opening day. As for Shall We Dance, it has low theater count, which increases the ratio, but it also attracts older women, which lowers the ratio, so I see a ratio of 120-140. It's on track for around 400 reviews, so I'd say 2.7-3.3M. |
