Post Re: Japan Box Office: Happy New Year!
I don't think Star Wars: The Last Jedi will reach the next major milestone, the ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster) milestone, but there's still a small chance (at 60+ days), so here's the Fastest list just in case (and to save me time from looking it up later):

Fastest to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster) - 90 Days or Less

25 - Spirited Away (2001)
28 - Your Name. (2016)
28 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
30 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
31 - Ponyo (2008)
33 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
35 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
37 - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
37 - Frozen (2014)
42 - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
43 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
44 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban (2004)
45 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
47 - Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (1999)
50 - Avatar (2009)
52 - Finding Nemo (2003)
52 - Toy Story 3 (2010)
52 - The Last Samurai (2003)
53 - The Wind Rises (2013)
53 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
53 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
57 - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)

Note: Not enough data available for a few films that likely would make this list, primarily including: Titanic, Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Antarctica.

If The Last Jedi does make this list, it'll join The Force Awakens and The Phantom Menace as the only three Star Wars films to reach the milestone.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Happy New Year!
And the New Year boost is over, at least the weekday boost. Most workplaces reopened on Friday, following the New Year and Bank Holidays, so this Friday saw some big drops versus last Friday. However, the first weekend of January tends to be very strong, so expect this weekend to beat last weekend (which full actuals still aren't available yet due to the three consecutive holidays this past week) with likely increases across the board thanks to families/kids/teens flooding theaters before school begins again.

Also, excellent first day for Kingsman: The Golden Circle. I don't think it'll beat Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the weekend (since it should increase, or remain flat at least), but it's going to easily outgross its predecessor. Japan may become one of its five strongest international markets.

The Weekend Forecast will be posted this evening.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Happy New Year!
Monday was a holiday (Coming of Age Day), so Weekend Actuals are going to be delayed yet again. Now, we're still waiting on LAST Weekend's Actuals (12/30-31) due to New Year/Bank Holidays (only limited imported releases are available), and on THIS Weekend's Actuals (01/06-07).

The 2017 calendar dates really messed with everything.

In the meantime, I'll post Weekend Estimates for this past weekend soon (figures and % changes based on last weekend's estimates), as well as estimates for Monday since it was a strong day (greater than Saturday or Sunday in most cases).

Finally YOUR NAME is opening in Germany as event programming (just 1 show each on Thursday and Sunday). Pre-sales are pretty good...

Corpse, have you ever updated YOUR NAME's worldwide box office?

I think it was a big enough hit in Singapore as well. I believe it made more than $0.1m here. I'll see if I can get some numbers.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised to see Your Name. in the Top 10 again in South Korea last week.

Japan rarely re-releases any film, beyond very limited showings (just a couple theaters), but the film did receive its first TV broadcast on TV Asahi for New Year and achieved a 17.4% rating. Definitely a strong result, and pretty much on par with many broadcast ratings for Studio Ghibli (Hayao Miyazaki) films.

It also rose to #1 (up from #11) on the weekly DVD sales chart (and #4 on the Blu-Ray sales chart) last week in Japan in its 24th week on home video.

Other highlights from its second year since theatrical release:

>2nd Top-Selling media franchise, earning ¥6.53 billion ($58 million) in media sales (DVDs, CDs and Novels/Manga). It only trailed the One Piece franchise.

>2nd Best-Selling DVD & Blu-Ray of the year -- all three versions of the Blu-Ray actually made the Top 10 (#2, #8, and #10).

>4th Best-Selling CD of the year. Also, this is unrelated to Your Name., but since it's definitely worth mentioning -- Namie Amuro's seventh compilation album sold a whopping 2,003,000 copies last year, and 1,113,000 in its first week alone, making it the first album to sell over 1 million copies in one week in Japan since 2004.

2017 was a very strong year for Japan in terms of media sales. Almost every medium experienced significant gains over 2016, including some results being the best in over 10 years (such as the Music Industry and Home Video Game Industry).

YOUR NAME did $275,000 yesterday in Germany... Even though YN was planned as an event release (shows only this Thursday and Sunday), theaters are adding showtimes on Sunday and Sunday next week...

With Sunday shows you can expect at least $600,000 this weekend...

Difficult to tell as many sex & violence (or just violent) Japanese movies did pretty well in the 60s & 70s...

It could be ONIBABA (1966) with an estimated 2.25m admissions, but my all-time list only goes to 1965 so far (still researching earlier years)...

Cool, thanks.

If you're able, and have the time, could you compile a list (Top 5/10) at some point? Estimated admissions/totals are perfectly fine.

Definitely. Not a year goes by without a new album(s), several singles, a tour, and home video releases from the likes of Arashi, AKB48, Kanjani8, Nogizaka46, then one or more of the older (80s/90s) boy groups like SMAP or EXILE (various branches now), as well as one or more of more modern (00s/10s) boy groups like Hey! Say! JUMP or Kis-My-F2. There are around a dozen or so acts that constantly rule the charts at all-times of the year, every year.
