Definitely huge for MI4. No wonder it has such impressive OS numbers, it exploded in China and Japan.

Tom Cruise has always been popular in Japan, that's one of the reasons of its enormous gross over there, however its Chinese numbers are scary impressive

Tom Cruise is still a star in Asia. Just check out the Asian grosses compared with the European ones for the MI series.

I'm really happy for A Simple Life. It's a great movie and deserves all the money it makes.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office (M:I4 crossed $100m)

Regardless of the reasons in Japan it was HUGE, and the numbers there are a quite better than the normal Tom Cruise movie. And yes the Chinese numbers are really impressive, possibly being released later with great WOM built the anticipation for a much bigger opening, and then the legs were quite good.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office (M:I4 crossed $100m)

Yeah, the WOM plays an even bigger role in China as there are still not enough screens respect to the number of movies released, and it becomes much harder for people to see a film once it's gone since there is normally only one theater within many miles for a lot of places outside of major metropolitan areas. It's common for a film to get shelved after only two weeks, and if you have good WOM, you could continue keeping the majority of the screens and that in turn helps the legs, producing a positive cycle. So you normally see a polar opposite of legs: when it's bad, it's really terrible, and when it's good, it truly stands out.

That's a pretty good hold, right? Doubling its opening weekend gross in ten days? It could come pretty close to the domestic gross for Carter.

Xiayun, how much money (in dollars) do you think John Carter will make in total? and how is it compared to Pirates 4 second weekend

Author:  xiayun [ Thu Mar 29, 2012 4:58 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: China Box Office (John Carter)

Yes, that's a pretty good hold for John Carter, although it's generally hard for a film released on Friday to not increase on the first week-to-week comparison since it's 3-day vs 7-day. $50m total is possible.

The midnight for Titanic is good; however, the matinee business isn't as strong. Doesn't look like it'll be as high as M:I4's opening day, but that was a Saturday. A $5-6m OD would still be excellent.

Not official yet but it's something.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office (Titanic has arrived)

I'm not particularly well versed in the China market but if that number is accurate, 100m is assured and it could make around 120-130m. I'm not sure about the multiplier though.

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office (Titanic has arrived)

Yeah, 72m yuan ($11.4m) is the currently reported number for the OD, although I suspect the daily actual reported next Tuesday will be a little lower (like it was the case for Inception). Either way, that's simply phenomenal, and it would be definitely looking at a $120m+ total, possibly $150m.

Can you explain this, xia?

Sure, expanding market but even compared to Russia it's in a different league.

BTW, I read in SI that China adds 8 screens each and every day on average...

Post subject:  Re: China Box Office (Titanic has arrived)

I just think Titanic has a special place in China cinema history, and everyone around my age and older remembered how popular it was; they are now the main workforce who could spend. Remember when it set the record in 98, it didn't merely break the old record, it obliterated everything since the box office data was officially gathered in China, and it took 12 years and probably ten-fold increases in screens for another film to top it.
