Impressive for Doraemon. It might just reach 5 billion yen if it can pull a multiplier similar to last year's.

It's another beneficiary of the market's recent growth (~2012-) - 2016 was biggest year ever in revenue, the fifth-consecutive year that admissions were up, and the most-attended year since 1974.

You have one of the longest-running and most consistent franchises ever now beginning to creep higher and higher and claiming records in ticket sales and revenue, whether in regard to opening weekends or totals.

Not accounting for the CGI 3D special event film, 2014's Stand By Me, Doraemon, last year's film was the first Doraemon release to ever gross ¥4 billion (¥4.12 billion). I doubt this year's film will reach ¥5 billion (the blockbuster milestone), but the fact that it's even possible is very significant.

Weekend Estimates will be up in an hour or so.

>Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic, the 37th Doraemon feature film, debuts atop the box office in top form. Based on estimates it achieved: the biggest opening weekend of 2017 by far; the biggest opening weekend since Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them last November in revenue, and the biggest opening weekend since Your Name. last August in admissions; the second biggest opening weekend in the franchise history in revenue, and the biggest opening weekend in the franchise in admissions.

The Doraemon franchise has a very long history, one that's been quite consistent, but in recent years, that consistency is beginning to be thrown out the window as the franchise has grown noticeably above the standard it established years ago.

>La La Land performed extraordinary well over the weekdays due to the post-Oscars effect, and its second weekend delivered as a result as well. The breakout musical hit will definitely exceed ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) following its recent numbers, and with Spring Break coming up soon, I wouldn't be surprised it it exceeds ¥3 billion (~$30 million) as well.

In the realm of live-action musicals, it'll at least become the fourth most-successful in the market, behind Chicago (¥3.50 billion), The Phantom of the Opera (¥4.20 billion), and Les Miserables (¥5.89 billion). Very, very impressive for an original musical with little known stars.

>Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale was up on Saturday as pre-sales and early ticket sales suggested, probably due to a fan event of some sort, but it slowed down on Sunday and ended up declining in its third weekend. However, it still achieved an incredibly strong third weekend hold, declining around 5% based on estimates. ¥2 billion (~$20 million) was looking a bit iffy after last weekend, but it's now become a likely milestone again.

>Assassin's Creed, perhaps unsurprisingly, was fairly frontloaded in regards to its pre-sale indicators, but it still managed a fair debut over the weekend. A ¥1 billion (~$10 million) total would have been a nice accomplishment for the film, and while it's not impossible to still achieve it, it's probably going to fall a tad shy.

>Your Name. achieves its 28th-consecutive week in the Top 10, having already broken the long-standing record last week set by Spirited Away (26-consecutive weeks in the Top 10) with its 27th-consecutive week in the Top 10.

It's quite silly to hope for anything more at this point, but wouldn't a 30-consecutive week run in the Top 10 be something? A 28-consecutive week run in the Top 10 may never be beaten, and it might even remain in the Top 10 next week, too, to achieve its 29th-consecutive week in the Top 10.

Doraemon, it's really always been Doraemon - he's the most iconic animated character in Japan.

A few Pokemon films have achieved heights that the Doraemon films may never reach, but general appeal has always been Doraemon's domain. The cultural impact Doraemon has had on Japan and generations of Japanese families is something that's unrivaled, and his legacy is everlasting. I think Doraemon is even a primary promoter for the 2020 Olympics.

>Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic, the 37th Doraemon feature film, debuts atop the box office in top form. Over the weekend frame, Nobita and Doraemon's latest adventure sold 592,036 admissions across 371 screens.

Its actual came in below estimates, but its opening weekend is still pretty significant on various levels: First, it achieved the biggest opening weekend of 2017 by far; secondly, it recorded the biggest opening weekend since Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Nov. '16) in revenue, and the biggest opening weekend since Your Name. (Aug. '16) in admissions; and finally, it recorded the second biggest opening weekend in the franchise history in both revenue and admissions.

The Doraemon franchise has a very long history, one that's been quite consistent, but in recent years, that consistency is beginning to be thrown out the window as the franchise continues to grow, reaching heights above the standard it established years ago.

>La La Land performed extraordinary well over the weekdays due to the post-Oscars effect, and its second weekend delivered in turn. The breakout musical hit only dropped 5% in its second weekend, and is going to easily exceed ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) following these recent numbers, and with Spring Break coming up soon, it's likely going to exceed ¥3 billion (~$30 million) as well.

It's still early, but there's a clear path for a total of ¥3.5-4.0 billion (~$35-40 million), which could make Japan its biggest international market, beating the UK and China.

In the realm of live-action musicals, it'll at least become the fourth most-successful in the market, but beating Chicago (¥3.50 billion) for third biggest live-action musical is possible. The Phantom of the Opera (¥4.20 billion) and Les Miserables (¥5.89 billion) would then be its next targets.

>Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale was up on Saturday as pre-sales and early ticket sales suggested, probably due to a fan event of some sort, but it slowed down on Sunday and ended up declining in its third weekend. However, it still achieved an incredibly strong third weekend hold, declining just 6%. ¥2 billion (~$20 million) was looking a bit iffy after last weekend, but it's now become a likely milestone again.

>Assassin's Creed, perhaps unsurprisingly, was fairly frontloaded in regards to its pre-sale indicators, but it still managed a fair debut over the weekend selling 101,096 admissions across 685 screens.

After an incredible 28 week run in the Top 10 so far, Makoto Shinkai's phenomenon has now sold 18.92 million admissions.

>Admissions aren't available (yet) for the two films to debut in ninth and tenth, respectively, but if anyone has any interest in either of them, PM me later this week and I'll check to see if admissions are available then.

If Your Name. does well at the Japanese Film Awards, is it likely to get a bump and stay around a little longer to edge out the Tokyo Olympiad?

Thanks for the data again!
I thought so, doraemon has been around for almost half a century and still going strong, it's a household cartoon name in asia, also, one those few animated film franchises with a WW cumulative total of over $1B. On the other hand, Pokemon is more appealing to Western audience, but seem like it lost all the charms over the years and hardly makes it to the theater now, the last film only managed around $20M.

"the biggest opening weekend since Your Name. (Aug. '16) in admissions"

What's the average ticket price of Doraemon compare to YN?

In This Corner of the World's director Sunao Katabuchi won MEXT Art Encouragement Prizes in the film category (shared with Shin Godzilla).

Very well deserved, but sadly the movie itself is not in top 10 box office anymore.

Your Name has also fallen out of Top 10 in recent dailies.

Moana released today, If Japanese fan appreciate it as much as I do it'll easily exceeds Frozen LOL
Anyway, Japanese trailer show whole movie, and all Japanese dub songs are leaked to Youtube (Dwayne Johnson's dub is very bad), interesting on how this will affect BoxOffice performance.

How's the reception today for Moana? I don't think it can perform to the level of Frozen and it'll be quite an achievement even if its collect 1/4th of that, let's see.

I have a hard time seeing any non-Japanese animation ever reaching the heights of Frozen again. The second highest grossing Western animation was Finding Nemo, and it made less than 50% of Frozen's gross.

Moana performed pretty well yesterday (Friday), but since it opened on a weekday, it's tough to gauge its weekend, and future, potential just yet.

Here's how it compares to Walt Disney Animation Studio's and Pixar's recent films for today (Sat.), based on pre-sales and very early morning/afternoon ticket sales (~8AM Sat. morning, same point-in-time):

Up 31% versus Inside Out
Up 28% versus Zootopia
Up 01% versus Finding Dory
Down 06% versus Big Hero 6
Down 25% versus Frozen

Currently, based on pre-sales and early morning/afternoon ticket sales, Moana is on track for a debut somewhere between Big Hero 6 and Finding Dory (¥600-700 million). A total north of ¥5 billion+ ($45-50 million+) would then be very likely, and if it manages to have comparable legs as its studio (WDAS) predecessors (excluding Frozen, of course), it might have ¥7 billion ($60 million+) potential.

But this is Japan, the Realm of Endless Legs, so who really knows how far it'll go. :mer:

Also, unsurprisingly, given WDAS's success in Japan in recent years, the market will become Moana's top international market, easily topping France.

I'll post this Weekend's Forecast in an hour or two.

>Moana finally reaches the land of the rising sun, saving its most luxurious international territory for last. Advance ticket sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales are very encouraging, outpacing last year's Zootopia by a comfortable margin and is currently on par with Finding Dory.

There was little doubt that the Polynesian animated adventure was going to be a hit in Japan, and it's likely going to be headed for a total north of the ¥5 billion ($40 million+) blockbuster milestone, with potential for much, much more; perhaps even as much as ¥7/8 billion ($60-70 million) depending on the next couple days/weeks' results.

>Doraemon, despite facing major competition, is going to secure a strong second weekend hold as its past predecessors have enjoyed, and is on course for either the first-third biggest second weekend gross in the long-running franchise. The 37th entry in the series is on target for a ¥4 billion ($35 million+) total.

>La La Land has begun to slow down a bit following the Oscar buzz it benefited from last week, but it's still going to post a strong weekend hold and has plenty more to earn over the course of the next several weeks/months. There's still a likely possibility of it reaching as much as ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+) or more.

>The latest Precure film will likely debut with a similar figure as the past couple films, and doesn't seem capable of generating enough interest to get this franchise back on track to its respectable (¥200 million debuts; near or over ¥1 billion totals) numbers earlier in the decade.

>This weekend could be it for Your Name.'s record-setting run (set two weeks ago) in the Top 10. It's now entering its 29th weekend, and is in for a very close battle for the #10 spot this weekend. Whether or not it remains in the Top 10 this weekend will also likely determine if it'll maintain a sizable screen/theater count leading up to Spring Break in two weeks, where it'll need to receive a boost to reach the ¥25 billion milestone - becoming only the fourth film in history to reach the mark.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Moana Debuts)
As of the Mid-Day Point (~2PM), here's how Moana is tracking versus Disney's recent animated releases (excluding The Good Dinosaur, which bombed):

Up 61.1% vs. Inside Out
Up 59.1% vs. Zootopia
Up 6.2% vs. Big Hero 6
Up 4.9% vs. Finding Dory
Down 18.8% vs. Frozen

Very, very impressive. It's only trailing Frozen, as you can see.

It's a great sign that Moana is up over Finding Dory, in particular, so far, but the comparison should be cautioned. Dory opened over a holiday weekend, so its Saturday ended up being "slow" and its weakest day because of that (it had mammoth Sun. and Mon. increases).

An opening weekend near ¥700 million ($6 million+) seems doable if it doesn't suddenly slow down in the evening (possible if it's skewing too young), and winds up with a strong Sunday. And an opening anywhere near, or over, ¥700 million should result in a minimum gross of ¥6 billion ($50-55 million), but it'll probably go higher unless WOM is simply just okay.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Moana Debuts)
Moana's Saturday Results versus recent Disney Animated Films:

Up 53.9% vs. Inside Out
Up 51.5% vs. Zootopia
Up 5.2% vs. Big Hero 6
Up 4.0% vs. Finding Dory
Down 19.7% vs. Frozen

Moana did slow down just a little bit in the evening/night, so it might be skewing slightly younger than Disney's other recent animated - still pretty early to determine that for sure, though.

I don't expect it to beat Finding Dory's weekend either, despite being up over it on Saturday because of Dory's unique situation of opening over a holiday weekend.

Still, very impressive start so far with an opening weekend between ¥600-700 million ($5.5-6 million or so) being likely, which will likely secure a total above ¥6 billion ($50 million+) at the very least, with potential for more.
