All drops are compared to last weekend's admissions from the same usual locations (10-15% of the market) for Sat., Sun., and the Weekend.
The battle for No.1 became even closer. Using avg. ticket prices for Arrietty and Toy Story 3 with only the admissions above put them at almost identical results in terms of gross.
It's getting late, so I'll revise my predictions tomorrow.

From screendaily Toy Story 3 continued to dominate in Japan, where it has now ranked top for four consecutive weekends, and gained 7% to gross $7.1m (¥612m) from 529 and raise the tally to $61.8m. It currently ranks as the third biggest US animated behind Pixar stablemates Finding Nemoon ¥11bn and Monsters, Inc on ¥9.5bn. The spy action thriller opened in second or third place in Japan on $3.9m from 334

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 7/31-8/1 Weekend Forecast
Not sure why it says it's ranked top for four consecutive weekends, it's spent one weekend on top, and Arrietty also increased this weekend. So did Bayside Shakedown 3. Incredibly strong Sunday results for everything. The Sunday numbers I posted above weren't final.
Update on this past weekend will be posted soon.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 7/31-8/1 Weekend Forecast
Overall Weekend Admissions Usual Locations (10-15% of the Market)
The Borrower Arrietty - 50,023 (+12%), Week 3 Toy Story 3 - 44,351 (+24%), Week 4 Salt - 31,184, NEW Inception - 26,004 (-14%), Week 2 Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! - 24,318 (+5%), Week 5 Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions: Zoroark - 19,323 (-8%), Week 3 Naruto Shippuden The Movie 4: The Lost Tower - 19,123, NEW The Adventures of Hatch the Honeybee and the Melody Story of Courage in the Plains - 4,463, NEW
Tickets were only Y1,000 ($11.50) on Sunday, which explains how it more than doubled Saturday's admissions.
It's not official, but sites are deducting about 10% of the totals this weekend to make up for Sunday's reduced prices.
Arrietty is estimated to have increased 2% compared to last weekend (about $7.1m), and Screen Daily has Toy Story 3 increasing by 7% this past weekend for about $7.1m. The large drop from the 24% increase over last weekend is probably because of it's 3D prices taking a sharp decrease on Sunday.
There's like a 51% chance TS3 came out on top. If taking 10% off is accurate, from these locations the total in gross would be:
TS3 - Y59,330,340 ($686,339) Arrietty - Y58,526,910 ($667,045)
Very strong weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 7/31-8/1 Weekend Forecast
The Box Office of the upcoming weekdays this week may take a small hit (Wednesday most definitely). One Piece Volume 59 goes on sale August 4th, with a record initial printing of 3.3 million copies. Last Spring, One Piece Volume 57 broke Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix's initial print run record of 2.85 million copies, with 2.9 million copies and selling over 1.6 million copies ($8m in sales) in less than a week. But then just a few months later, One Piece Volume 58 broke that record with a initial print run of 3.1 million copies. One Piece Volume 59 is significant because it's the concluding volume (arc) of the half-way point of the all-time best selling manga, which may exceed 200 million copies sold this week or the following week.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 7/31-8/1 Weekend Forecast
Warner is late again, but the Overall Rankings have already been released:
Weekend Rankings July 31-August 1, 2010
1 2 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 3 2 3 Toy Story 3 (Disney) 4 3 N Salt (Sony) 4 1 Inception (WB) 2 5 4 Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) 5 6 5 Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions Zoroark (Toho) 4 7 N Naruto Shippuden The Movie 4 The Lost Tower (Toho) 8 N The Adventures of Hutch the Honeybee and the Melody Story of Courage in the Plains (Shochiku) 9 N Chonmage Purin (J Storm) 10 7 Confessions (Toho) 9
Arrietty won in admissions, not surprising, but it's still unclear if Toy Story 3 took the No.1 spot back in gross. Both films increased, and Screen Daily's 7% increase for TS3 doesn't add up anywhere after checking some numbers.
If it increased 7% in Yen, that'd be about Y575m or $6.7m (not their Y612/$7.1m estimate), and if it increased 7% in Dollars, that'd also be about $6.7m.
I'd rather use the local sources that suggest it increased about 24% in admissions, but deduced 10% (because of Sunday's reduced prices), so about a 14% increase would be Y612m (ha!) or $7.1m. Screen Daily's 7% is screwed up. Arrietty increased 12% over last weekend, but -10% for Sunday's reduced prices would result in a weekend of about Y610 ($7.1m). They're still so darn close, even the slightest percent changes everything. I think TS3 will edge out the victory this weekend though.
But those are not official, and hopefully numbers for both of them will be released with the others later in the day.
Don't be too worried by Inception's large drop. It was to be expected with previews being included into it's opening last weekend.
And I'm surprised Chonmage Purin made the Top 10 in the National Rankings.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 7/31-8/1 Weekend Rankings
This was posted in BOM. Corpse, any idea about how big dragon will be in japan and its impact to TS3(especially about how many 3d screens its losing). cat_lover wrote: TS3 weekend numbers in Japan : WE3 - ¥536,223,866 - $6.1m WE4 - ¥617,134,600 (+15%) - $7.1m (+16%) Thanks to 3D, it's bigger than Arietty's number (¥548,807,510) despite the fact that TS3 was released a week earlier. Also, admission wise, it actually increased around 20% from previous weekend! Seriously, an increase is amazing! I didn't expect that. It's like mini Avatar. This weekend, HTTYD will be released. I don't how many 3D screens will be taken from TS3, but I hope it won't be that many. I remember COTT didn't really effect Alice. But HTTYD is also an animation movie so aside from 3D screens, it will be a competition. So, I expect a bigger than usual drop for TS3, although I hope it won't be that big.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 7/31-8/1 Weekend Rankings
Those numbers are indeed correct for TS3 and Arrietty.
TS3 - Y617,134,600/455,540 admissions Arrietty - Y548,807,510/502,963 admissions
Calling it mini-Avatar is a bit much though, early-mid August normally sees increases. Cheaper tickets+Holidays.
HTTYD is being discussed often, many citing the excellent reviews, so those will help. But I doubt it hurts TS3 that much.
About to post the full weekend results, totals, etc.

So is arrietty the favorite to win the battle considering ghibli films tend to have a loooonnnnnng run.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 7/31-8/1 Weekend Rankings
A slight favorite, but it's up in the air. It's between it and Toy Story 3 now, and next weekend will help decide.
We'll see how TS3 holds against How To Train Your Dragon, and if Arrietty can hold well enough to match TS3's 23day total.
IF TS3 holds fine against Dragon (which it should, but it might still stun it a little), it won't have any competition until late September when Umizaru 3 opens on 400+ screens (100+ being 3D). By that time though, we should know which will win the Summer.
Ghibli vs Pixar, can't get much better than that.

Yeah, you can check out the admissions and totals, etc. in the Weekend Rankings a few posts above. The total is a little higher than their $61.8m, however, it's about $62.4m.
And welcome to the forums.

I think now that is more than probable,,,TS3 will become the highest grossing animated hollywood film for a while, so glad for that, but I´ve been thinking this day about what will happen when Monsters Inc 2 comes out, this will definitely be a monster hit over there, just looking at the money the first film made,,, could MI2 enter in the all time the top 10 and beat a Ghibli film such as Ponyo or Princess Mononoke??
