Re: Japan Box Office: Thanks For A Great Year Guys! 2017 Beg
The week-to-week increases will begin to level off on Thursday as schools and businesses resume, and I expect things will be largely back to normal on Friday. Your Name. is, of course, an exception, so it's hard to say when it'll begin to slow down.
As long as its still doing significant numbers, Your Name. could play for up to a year since opening (last August). At minimum, it'll probably stay in wide release until at least mid-March (its 30th week of release at that point), if not even up through Golden Week (end of April). I'm sure it'll remain in limited release for a significantly longer period.
Another contributing factor, and it's the same for any film, is chart performance. If a film is still selling enough ticket to remain in the Top 10, Top 5, or higher, there's no reason for studios/theaters to cut screens for it. And it appears that Your Name. may very well reclaim the #1 spot today, on its 132nd day of release. It hasn't been announced, but it probably reclaimed the #1 spot yesterday in terms of admissions, too.
Its closing date will also come down to how viable its chances are at beating Spirited Away in the coming months. As I said above, if it's still doing fine numbers and maintaining a high chart ranking, and begins to close in on Spirited Away, that'll just prolong its run even further.

Re: Japan Box Office: Thanks For A Great Year Guys! 2017 Beg
Judging by the current pace, Your name can very well make another record of being the top domestic grosser for two consecutive years (It's not consider this way, but still) If it collects around ¥80 - ¥100 billion in 2017, I don't see any upcoming film to outgross that amount for now. Studio Ponoc's "Witch's flower" might have a chance tho.

Corpse, I know that you are very busy but I would like to know how your work on the admissions of imported films is going?
I look forward to it impatiently. It is curious how so few countries have old, complete and consistent data of admissions. Only the United States, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia and Brazil.
I am completing a top of the most watched films of history based on the admissions of these countries. I think admissions are more relevant than the box office.

Re: Japan Box Office: Thanks For A Great Year Guys! 2017 Beg
The dollar box office makes it look like the industry has kept growing, while admissions tell an entirely different story. The UK for example had admissions easily over 1 billion a year in the 1940s and early 1950s while they are below 200 million a year today (after having fallen to 54 million in 1984).
Comparing admissions in such different periods is imo almost as irrelevant as the dollar-based comparisons. I think the most relevant indicator we could use would be the % of market share in admissions for a given movie, as that would take into account the market conditions.

I quoted on your post from awhile back to make my earlier statement clear. There are scenes where Shinkai do express characters change of emotion/ expression to the fullest, like the ending of garden of words. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBl6Kg9aNRQAnd when it had a somewhat resolution-less ending, it is clear that Shinkai intended a happy ending, but only in the mind of the viewer. In Your Name, however, there are that scenes where Mitsuha and Taki cried with almost no expression ,, that to me, was the message Shinkai was trying to deliver to the audience. By bringing up fading memory as a result of the waking up from the dream, he wished to tell the audience that eventhough people could forget something, the feelings they have from that time is not easy to disappear. Resulting the sudden crying scenes Anyway, great news from South Korea, keep us up to date. I will post information too, as soon i get it, when somebody else haven't.

I know I told you I'd have it all posted weeks ago now, apologies. Unfortunately, I'm suffering from a cold (hopefully it's just that...) right now, and work has been exhausting the past couple weeks. HOWEVER, I'm likely taking a sick day tomorrow unless I feel noticeably better in the morning, and I have a three day weekend ahead, too, so I WILL have it all posted sometime over the weekend, promise!

Weekend Actuals are available now, following the New Year, and I'll have them posted tomorrow. Surprisingly, because of estimates (not expectations), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter retained its position atop the box office (by a mere 0.1%). It really looked like Rogue One had reclaimed the top spot, but it remained in second place.
And Your Name. took the #1 spot back yesterday (Wednesday), on its 132nd day in release. I'll have the New Year weekday estimates updated tomorrow as well, following the Weekend Actuals.

Re: Japan Box Office: New Year WKND Actuals/Weekday Estimate
It's correct, and it's very, very good. Last Thursday was the first day that schools/businesses began going on break while this Thursday many began going back, so to be down just 23% while mostly everything else is down over ~50% is extraordinary (especially coming off some of the biggest increases over New Year).

Last Thursday was the first day that schools/businesses began going on break while this Thursday many began going back, so to be down just 23% while mostly everything else is down over ~50% is extraordinary (especially coming off some of the biggest increases over New Year). That's awesome

Re: Japan Box Office: New Year WKND Actuals/Weekday Estimate
Finally the weekend are out. I've been waiting for it to update the global figure of Your Name. And thank you as usual, Corpse. Great detail of presentation.
At the moment, Your Name has passed some new milestones. - 4th most attended film surpassing Titanic - 1st japan film to cross US$ 300 Million Worldwide (i wonder why Toho hasn't announce this? Probably because the currency thingie).
and last:
#NATION #LOCAL CURR #USD JAPAN 21,930,000,000 209,700,000 CHINA 566,000,000 82,250,000 UK 373,791 466,772 AUSTRALIA 1,075,783 771,945 THAILAND 43,600,010 1,222,693 NZ 136,895 95,278 TAIWAN 200,000,000 6,250,000 HK 30,719,914 3,961,279 FRANCE* 541,415 573,900 SOUTH KOREA 638,495,550 538,654 MALAYSIA INDONESIA SINGAPORE PHILIPPINE TOTAL 305,830,521 (USD)
*) For France, since there is no gross earning info yet (at least within my reach), average 7 Euro ticket price is used - based on several information, i think this is a quite low number - (admission is 77,345).
Meanwhile in South Korea, yn is having a 2nd day on top of daily chart, with cummulative of over US$ 2.2 Million since opening yesterday (plus preview last weekend). Today the number of screens is added to 778 (yesterday at 555).

Re: Japan Box Office: New Year WKND Actuals/Weekday Estimate
I'm sure Toho will announce something about that soon.
They did announce today that with the record #1 debut (for a Japanese film) in South Korea (I read a local article projecting ~$40-50 million there now), it's achieved #1 on the charts in five countries so far, and that its run is being extended in China due to its weekly holds there.
And not that it really needs it, since it's begun its rise back to the #1 spot on the Japanese charts going into its 20th weekend, it'll be receiving an IMAX release on Jan. 13th.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it amid all the Kimi no Na wa hype, so a quick shout-out to Kono Sekai no Katasumi Ni (In This Corner of the World) for starting at a lowly ¥47m and having now crossed the ¥1bn mark with some crazy holds (or more like week on week increases most of the time).

Re: Japan Box Office: New Year WKND Actuals/Weekday Estimate
Indeed. It's been, in my opinion, the most successful film that was released over the past four months and undoubtedly one of the most impressive this year (top 5, easily).
It's only been playing on 68 screens ever since opening, and yet it's remained in the Top 10 now for 8-consecutive weeks. It's very much a limited release, only playing in 6 of the 9 regions, and yet still it managed to break ¥1 billion this week.
It's multiplier after 8 weeks in release has exceeded 21 (only behind Your Name. for 2016, and one of the highest multipliers for a ¥1 billion earner of all-time, too). It's behaving like a mini-Your Name..

Impressive.

Re: Japan Box Office: New Year WKND Actuals/Weekday Estimate
It's playing on 173 screens (154% increase) beginning this weekend, and is looking at a likely weekend increase and a ninth week in the Top 10. The distributor, Tokyo Theaters Co., rarely has a film playing anywhere near 200 screens, since they primarily operate in the Kanto and Chubu regions, so this is a big deal for them.
I'll have the Weekend Forecast up soon.

The Weekend Forecast this weekend is very tricky and a bit unpredictable. Last weekend was, of course, New Year, meaning that last Saturday's evening/night business was incredibly weak, while Sunday was the 1st (a major discount day) that gave everything a boost... So, I'm not too confident in weekend predictions this week given the unique circumstances.
There should, however, be a very close race for the #1 spot between reigning champ Resident Evil (aiming to achieve its 3rd-consecutive weekend at #1), Rogue One (hoping to earn a second week at #1, since this is its last chance), and Your Name. (now entering its 20th weekend and looking to make more history).
>Your Name. is also well on its way to challenging Spirited Away's record for most-consecutive weeks in the Top 5 (21) and Top 10 (26). After this weekend, it needs 3 more weeks in the Top 5, and 6 more weeks in the Top 10; both appear likely, given its performance and the IMAX release next week. If Your Name. reclaims the #1 spot this weekend, or the next, it'll be the only film to ever rise back to the #1 position in its 20th/21st week of release.
>Kizumonogatari Part 3: Reiketsu is the only wide opener this weekend (the post-New Year weekend is typically barren of wide openers), and just barely, playing on 118 screens. Its opening should mostly be inline with the past two films, though likely coming in just below the first film.
>In This Corner of the World will be given a well-deserved expansion this weekend due to its incredible performance in limited release over the past 8 weeks, and exceeding the ¥1 billion milestone on only 68 screens.

Is FB the only film that manage to cross ¥5 billion mark in last 4 months? What about The mermaid? I thought it was suppose to release this weekend.

Well, ¥5 billion isn't an easy milestone to reach. For comparison purposes, it's about the equivalent to a $250 million grosser in the U.S. On average, 5-7 is the typical number of films that reach ¥5 billion each year.
Of course, there's usually at least one ¥5 billion earner out of December, but 2016 won't have any [Rogue One (slight disappointment), Resident Evil (performing within expectations), and Yo-Kai Watch 3 (big decrease) will all miss]. 2016 didn't really need any more, though, since it already had 9 films do so (second most of all-time), and was so strong throughout that it'll likely end up being the biggest year of all-time anyway (in revenue).
The Mermaid did open this weekend, but only on 10 screens. It's not even making the Top 25 films for today, though, so it's a bomb. The vast majority of Chinese films only receive limited releases, and often perform poorly, so no surprise.
