Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Actuals (Welcome to Raccoon City)
Judging by the current performance, it's hard to tell that the film was released in August SA's WW record is already gone for good, but its domestic collection is still safe atm unless YN gets boosted by OSCAR. Certainly not likely to happen before 3-4 months.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Actuals (Welcome to Raccoon City)
I wonder if the Japanese people would dislike it if a US film became the most attended in Japan. I know it's very hard to do so, and a film would need to be so unbelievably popular to even contend, but afterwards when it has reached #1, I wonder if they would hate themselves for liking it and helping it reach pole position.

So far, after eighteen weeks, it has sold 16,407,833 admissions, making it the fifth most-attended film in history, and it's less than 430,000 admissions away from overtaking Titanic now - which it'll do, easily, come next week. I still believe the re-release of 2012 should be included in Titanic's total...

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Actuals (Welcome to Raccoon City)
I don't think any actual admission figures are available for it, or any other 3D re-release during that short-lived time period, since they all either disappointed or bombed.
None of the 3D re-releases even reached ¥1 billion, and given the high avg. ticket prices, 500,000-600,000 admissions would have been the maximum attendance, and only The Phantom Menace and/or Titanic would have finished in that range. None of the other 3D re-release came anywhere near 500,000 admissions, most probably failing to even reach 300,000. I could go back and estimate, but again, it wouldn't be official since final actual figures for sub-¥1 billion films are very rarely reported.
But this presents a problem if I were to estimate and add some unofficial admissions to any film that received a re-release, because I'd have to do it for a HELL of a lot of films since it's very common for classic or iconic films to be re-released in a few theaters almost every week in Japan. Only a few of them crack the Top 25, but that's still tickets sold.

Can you ask the distributor? (That's what I do here in Germany)

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Actuals (Welcome to Raccoon City)
Corpse, do you know why Yo Kai Watch has been performing like crazy the past few days in particular?? Today it is 6 times last week admission (at mimorin). Yesterday it was around that figure too. Other films like Your Name and FB also have increase, but only like +100%, not +500% like what YKW is currently experiencing. I'm guessing this might have related to some kind of free stuffs or other kinds of gimmick, but i'm not sure it'll be as big as this.
Update on Your Name's international gross (I create it myself, feel free to comment):
#NATION #LOCAL CURR #USD JAPAN 21,327,000,000 204,600,000 CHINA 559,000,000 80,502,591 UK 373,791 466,772 AUSTRALIA 1,075,783 771,945 THAILAND 43,600,010 1,222,693 NZ 136,895 95,278 TAIWAN 200,000,000 6,250,000 HK 29,819,004 3,843,795 MALAYSIA INDONESIA SINGAPORE PHILIPPIINE TOTAL 297,753,074 (USD)
It's very close to reaching USD 300 M, which will be reached at the end of this week. France opening is yesterday. There are still Korea and North America release next year.

Update on Your Name at France BO: http://www.avoir-alire.com/demarrages-p ... es-etoilesYN is 2nd only among the openers (next to Passengers) in Paris 14h first session with 1,107 admission from 10 theaters. At another website, the movie is predicted at 13th after the first week that end 3-Jan with 70,000 admission, with limited number of screens (100). http://www.cine-directors.net/boxbis.htmThere's another interesting page here: http://www.jpbox-office.com/comparaison ... 7&id2=1768Comparison with Spirited Away (which grabbed US$ 10M during its release there). By simple math, Your Name would end mostly at US$ 4M, but that's just very rough prediction.

Its first day admissions are pretty good given the limited release. Apparently the distributor is trying to negociate extra screens for January and the first-day numbers should help them in the process. With the excellent WOM this is getting I can see it pulling Mononoké numbers (750k total admissions).

@Cynosure Hopefully so! First day entree (i guess this means admission) is almost 16k, not bad, i guess (compared to Spirited away's with 40k, but with 2.5 times number of screen) -- pretty much not far away in terms of average attendance per screen.

Sorry updates have been pretty slow this week, this final week of 2016 has been quite exhausting for me. I'll have the Weekend Forecast posted in an hour or two. And over the weekend and early next week, I'll have a lot to post in preparation for the 2017 year.

No wide openers ever debut the last weekend of the year, so this weekend is all about the holdovers.
>Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be in a close battle for the top spot, though the former should be able to capture the #1 spot for a second-consecutive weekend.
>Your Name. simply refuses to slow down, and is going to experience another weekend increase in its nineteenth week of release; this time, possibly enough to give it a significant rise up the charts, aiming for the Top 3 once more. It needed a strong New Year boost to put it in contention to outgross Frozen and Titanic, and it's getting just what it needed and more to come.
Following the New Year, it'll be expanding to IMAX locations and could return to the #1 spot. #SpiritedAwayInTrouble?
>Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them continues to show that spin-offs don't always have to be disappointments, as is the case with most in Japan, and is beginning to close in on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 - the lowest grossing film in the Harry Potter franchise.
>Yo-Kai Watch 3 is showing better legs than both of its predecessors, though the franchise continues to suffer from some notable frontloading. Thankfully, the weekdays this time of year are very strong for any film skewing toward a younger audience, such as this one, so its weekends aren't nearly as important.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (New Year)
Meanwhile, "YN" run in China is almost over earned $81 M, in RMB it's the highest grossing Japanese film in China, but In USD "Stand by Me doreamon" will still lead the chart with $87 M. It's of no surprise that "YN" is performing exceptionally well in Germany as well, didn't expect it to get limited release tho. January seems weak tbh, Claiming back the top position will be easy as ABC ,but then again the IMAX version will be for restricted 2weeks only. anyway last day of the year,HNY to all of you guys

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (New Year)
It is not that accurate comparing based on dollars. If you have that in Yen, it'll be a more measurable subject.
Anyway, yn is the highest rated animation (audience ver.) at allocine.fr with 4.6. I think this list goes back to years back (an overall list, not just 2016 films).
Media version, the highest rated is Castle in the sky (Miyazaki) with a perfect 5.0.
Meanwhile, last night in Japan, the attendance number of all films dropped significantly, from what I see at mimorin (just CMIIW). Probably due to new year's celebration.
And happy 2017, everyone!

I don't think Variety had the Yen figures available when I recorded the weekly amounts from their archives (which I think I did at some point in 2004-2005?), unless I'm misremembering.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (New Year)
Just watched highest grossing japan animation last year (boy and the beast), and I just remembered what missing from your name. ..which is the abrupt change in facial expression.. along with the emotional line.
Although, one might note, Shinkai use different type of approach in yn. , which is the use of fading memory as the cause of emotional firework. It's like something is bothering the mind for a long time, like something/someone dear has been lost, but couldn't figure what it is, so instead of feeling sad, there's that unexplainable longing feeling..
The unconventional method is perhaps what separate yn from many japan animation. Of course, adult, dorama-ish type anime is not a new genre. With the grandiose tool for plot twist in addition (comet, time lapse) Shinkai signature visuals etc, making it the obvious well-deserved phenomenon this year.
your name is up 100% from last sunday as of this moment.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (New Year)
Tbh,I like Shinkai quite a bit and people often cheapen the intent of his films by just saying that they're just pretty colors (mainly the one who criticise him) and I do agree a bit, but he does an excellent job of conveying grander ideass, concepts and messages of life through simple interactions which most anime directors fails to do or simply they don't try to. "The lingering feeling of missing something important" shouldn't be surprise to you if you've watched his previous works, for me it was "5CMPS" in which it was extent to the fullest. "The boy and the beast" was one of the weaker Hosoda's work, nevertheless it performed quite decent mainly because of his rising fame and as a successor to Miyazaki, which tag is eventually taken over by Shinkai now. Going back to "Your name", it's no mean a perfect film, the plot was pretty cliche with flaws, but it was executed brilliantly and it meant to appeal to larger audience as well. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LDJ680sTa ... =mv-google <Shinkai hesitate to answer few queries related to the film. Anyway it was a remarkable year for animation, whether it's Western or Asian.
