Post Re: Japan Box Office: Chart Update Galore
Thanks Corpse for the full update, as always!

Interesting showdown between RO and YKW.. from your point of view, how would the final numbers of these two films? Would it be like what occured during this year's TFA vs YKW ~previous movie, where TFA heavily out-grossed the later at the end? YKW doesn't seems like a franchise that has a good longevity, just like what happened with One piece the other day (OP Film Gold).

Anyway, finally a drop in weekend for Your Name, after two weeks of increase. That would be related to the appearance of new films too, of course. The next two weekends would be holidays though. I guess that would again raise its weekend number. Or not? I heard Christmas is not a holiday in Japan, so next monday would be a usual working day. Is it true?

And congratz for it to, once more, reached another milestone (US$ 200 M), if according to Corpse calculation and making it, once more, only the 2nd Japan Film to achieve it. I guess that would make the worldwide gross close to US$ 300 M right now (~ US$ 290 M). It's catching for a 300-Million USD pre-US Opening, considering France opening is next Wednesday (Dunno how many theaters/ screens/ shows are opened though). Also Korean opening is early next year. Nice.

I remember Corpse predicting that "Your name" will reach $200 m within 23rd Dec,surely it did
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature ... ai/.110150 < Shinkai's latest interview.

Undoubtedly a uber-blockbuster.
#Highest grossing Japanese film ever in terms of ww.
#2nd highest grossing Asian film of the year behind
The mermaid ($553m)
#3rd highest non-hollywood film ever behind The mermaid ($553m) and The intouchables ($426m)
#7th highest grossing animated film of the year and would be on par with Disney's Moana.

Btw,any idea on exact budget?

Maybe 4th, behind Monster Hunt as 3rd (US$ 385 M). I don't think even Your Name could eclipse that. Unless the north american release is going to be wide release and theathers are at least half packed with audience.

Still no idea of the exact budget. But this is the list of most expensive non-english language movies:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_m ... uage_films
Your Name would be below US$ 30 Million if the list is accurate and up-to-date.

The Kamen Rider situation is honestly incredible. 3 movies a year and yet a mostly stable level of revenue. It's like Doraemon on steroids.

Christmas isn't a national holiday, and the 26th is indeed a regular day as is every day up to the 30th; however, the last week of December is still, generally, slightly stronger than normal levels. The whole first week of January is when the box office really explodes to celebrate New Year.

December 23rd, this Friday, is a national holiday, though, The Emperor's Birthday, so it's still kind of a holiday weekend. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is going to do gangbusters this weekend.

It's rare for budget information to be announced, which is interesting because pretty much every figure imaginable is available, and not just the box office; detailed and precise figures of various kinds are released daily across pretty much every medium (music, video games, home video, manga, books, etc.).

It's well-known that few films ever have a budget above ¥1 billion (~$10 million), though, with that type of budget usually reserved for high profile releases, unless there are production issues of course. And even then, it's rare for a film to reach a budget north of ¥2-3 billion (~$20-30 million).

High-quality animated films are, however, among the most-expensive films to produce. Studio Ghibli's releases are among the most costly films in Japanese cinema, for example, due to the years, man hours, and resources it takes to produce a hand drawn animated film. Budgets for these films can easily, and quickly, approach or exceed ¥3-4 billion ($30-40 million). The high cost of hand drawn animation was, ultimately, why Studio Ghibli had to shut down their film production department two years ago.

I'm quite certain that Shinkai makes use of computers and special effects in his films, so I highly doubt Your Name. cost anywhere near ¥3 billion. I'd say something around ¥1.5/2 billion ($15/20 million) was the likely budget total.

It's easy to lose track, I have to go back almost every time a Kamen Rider film is released (every December, March, and August...) to check myself. The film released two weeks ago is the 56th theatrical release, if I didn't lose count over the years.

>Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is aiming to debut atop the box office the week before New Year, and based on its performance yesterday and its pre-sales and today's ticket sales, it's very likely to do just that.

Japan has been Resident Evil franchise's strongest market ever since the fourth film, having overtaking its earnings in the US, so it's releasing first in the market to take advantage of the upcoming New Year holiday period. The last two films, Afterlife and Retribution, both grossed over ¥4 billion ($48 million and $57 million, respectively), and The Final Chapter is hoping to either match their success, or exceed them if all goes well with the Winter release strategy.

>Fantastic Beasts has been quite the success story in Japan - a market where spin-offs, or prequels/sequels, to concluded series' often disappoint or fail to come close to their main series predecessors (Rogue One is a current example). It's either going to post a very small drop this weekend, or possibly a weekend increase based on today's current ticket sales.

And with New Year coming up soon, I'm confident in projecting that it will indeed outgross the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film, Deathly Hallows Part 1, with a gross likely between ¥7-7.5 billion ($65-70 million).

>Your Name. is entering its eighteenth week of release this weekend, and is incredibly likely to enjoy yet another weekend increase and rise back into the Top 5 (after falling out for the first time last week). New Year is quickly approaching, and considering how well the film is still doing at this stage, Frozen and Titanic are very much in its sights.

Thanks for the info, tbh even a budget of ($15/20 million) was pretty high for Shinkai considering he never had any box office success before, but it changed over night.
Anyway it took less than couple of years for this particular project, so it's way more convenient than Studio Ghibli's traditional style of doing it.
"The tale of Princess kaguya" is the most expensive Japanese film ever made and also one of the biggest disaster as well, made on a budget of $50 m, it hardly grossed half of it. :P
Even most of the staff members joined Studio Ponoc and working for them now.
I wonder where all the hype for RE comes from :er:

According to here, Your Name is just a stone's toss away (about 1-2 million USD) from beating Spirited Away's international gross. I imagine that will happen this weekend, and Toho might make an announcement about it. How much further would that accomplishment boost the film's long-term box office prospects?

I don't have one made up, but I'll put one together tomorrow (comparisons with the last two films will be available in my weekend write-up).

Weekend Actuals will be up soon.

>Resident Evil: The Final Chapter debuts atop the box office, delivering an opening weekend and 3-day total pretty much on par with the last two films, Retribution and Afterlife.

The sixth, and final, film in the Resident Evil franchise sold 400,957 admissions over the weekend frame, and sold 643,754 admissions since opening on Friday. Its debut over the 3-day weekend is 11.0% ahead of Retribution; 11.7% behind Afterlife. Both of its predecessors went on to exceed ¥4 billion ($48 million and $57 million, respectively), with the last one coming within striking distance of the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone - The Final Chapter is likely to follow suit, especially with the New Year boost next week, so look for a total between ¥4-5 billion ($35-45 million).

>Fantastic Beasts has now easily exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, and with New Year coming up soon, I'm confident in projecting that it will indeed outgross the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film, Deathly Hallows Part 1. It's on track to gross between ¥7-7.5 billion ($65-70 million).

>Your Name. is entering its eighteenth week of release this weekend, and delivered another weekend increase to its ongoing performance. So far, after eighteen weeks, it has sold 16,407,833 admissions, making it the fifth most-attended film in history, and it's less than 430,000 admissions away from overtaking Titanic now - which it'll do, easily, come next week.

When all is said and done, and it'll be awhile before then, there is a strong likelihood that Your Name. will end up beating Frozen and Titanic in gross to become the #2 film of all-time, behind Spirited Away. And in terms of admissions, it's likely to become, at least, the #4 most-attended film of all-time, behind Spirtied Away, Frozen, and Tokyo Olympiad.

Of course, it's exceeded every goal set before it each and every time, so who knows, maybe Spirited Away is truly in danger after all these years.
