Isn't it New Year in Japan like a month before the rest of the world? Is that a holiday?

I remember you telling me that the year ends earlier than the Gregorian calendar in Japan, around Nov.

Re: Japan Box Office: Your Name Still #1; Aiming For $200m+
Yes, Eiren (Motion Picture Producers of Japan) operates on the box office year running on roughly a December to December schedule (usually beginning the last week of November). It can get confusing but every form of entertainment from the video game industry, to the music industry, to the book/manga industry, to pretty much everything, runs on a similar calendar.
This is why, for example, you see Star Wars: The Force Awakens on the 2016 Yearly charts I update each week. It was released in December 2015, but it's counted as a 2016 release by Eiren.

Its seven-week total is the third-highest of all-time, trailing only Spirited Away and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
After Monday's holiday, its total reached an astounding ¥14.56 billion ($141.8 million) with 11.19 million admissions. It's now the eleventh highest-grossing film of all-time, and the fourteenth most-attended film of all-time. I've been doing some projections and I see a comfortable path to ¥18 billion ($175 million) and 13.7/13.8 million admissions, but won't be surprised if it makes a run at that ¥20 billion ($200 million) milestone and over 15 million admissions.
>Jason Bourne debuts in a distant second place, but it has a lot to celebrate: Over the weekend frame, it sold a good 246,617 admissions across 416 screens, making it the best opener in the Bourne franchise in terms of admissions AND gross.
And after Monday's holiday, and the early start on Friday, its four day total reached a great ¥585.6 million ($5.6 million) with 429,196 admissions. It's very likely going to exceed the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone, more than enough to make it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise as well.
>High & Low: The Red Rain debuts in third place, selling 224,108 admissions on 313 screens over the weekend frame. This opening is down 31% compared to the supergroup's first film back in July, but I'd consider this debut still pretty successful since generating the same amount of hype so soon was very unlikely. After Monday's holiday, its three day total reached 387.8 million ($3.7 million) with 298,639 admissions.

Re: Japan Box Office: Your Name Still #1; Aiming For $200m+
Sorry for the lack of updates lately, everyone. I've taken on a new position at work, and my time has been a lot more limited lately.
I'll post this weekend's forecast later tonight.
So, I'll probably only be updating on Fridays (WKND Forecast), Saturday/Sunday (WKND Estimates), and Monday (WKND Actuals, Chart Updates). Mondays might be delayed until Tuesdays, depending on the week.

kireilanford wrote: Your Name should be really really close with Ponyo and Avatar this weekend As of last Sunday, it was at ¥15.41 billion, exceeding ¥15 billion on Saturday to become the fourth fastest film to ever reach that milestone. Monday was pretty good, so I believe it passed Ponyo then, or on Tuesday at the latest. And it likely surpassed Avatar on either Wednesday or Thursday. And since it definitely beat Ponyo early in the week, I'm sure an announcement was made, so I'll do some quick searches to confirm that.

Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest to ¥10 billion
I don't think Star Wars: The Last Jedi will reach the next major milestone, the ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster) milestone, but there's still a small chance (60+ days), so here's the Fastest list just in case (and to save me time from looking it up later):
Fastest to ¥10 billion (90 Days or Less)
25 - Spirited Away (2001) 28 - Your Name. (2016) 28 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) 30 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003) 31 - Ponyo (2008) 33 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004) 35 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) 37 - Alice in Wonderland (2010) 37 - Frozen (2014) 42 - Beauty and the Beast (2017) 43 - Princess Mononoke (1997) 44 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban (2004) 45 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) 47 - Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (1999) 50 - Avatar (2009) 52 - Finding Nemo (2003) 52 - Toy Story 3 (2010) 52 - The Last Samurai (2003) 53 - The Wind Rises (2013) 53 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) 53 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) 57 - The Matrix Reloaded (2003) 78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)
Note: Not enough data available for a few films that likely would make this list, primarily including: Titanic, Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Antarctica.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forcast (10/22-23)
(C) 2016「君の名は。」製作委員会Weekend Forecast (10/22-23)01 (01) ¥519,000,000 ($5.0 million), +11%, ¥16,300,000,000 ($155.1 million), Your Name. (Toho) WK9 02 (---) ¥225,000,000 ($2.1 million), 0, ¥225,000,000 ($2.1 million), Star Trek Beyond (Paramount) NEW 03 (---) ¥150,000,000 ($1.4 million), 0, ¥150,000,000 ($1.4 million), Gold Medal Man (Showgate) NEW 04 (---) ¥125,000,000 ($1.2 million), 0, ¥125,000,000 ($1.2 million), Ushijima the Loan Shark - Finale (SPD) NEW 05 (02) ¥107,000,000 ($1.0 million), -42%, ¥475,000,000 ($4.5 million), Somebody (Toho) WK2 06 (03) ¥105,000,000 ($1.0 million), -32%, ¥1,225,000,000 ($11.9 million), Jason Bourne (Toho-Towa) WK3 07 (04) ¥77,000,000 ($750,000), -35%, ¥825,000,000 ($8.0 million), High & Low: The Red Rain (Shochiku) WK3 08 (05) ¥60,000,000 ($585,000), -29%, ¥1,900,000,000 ($18.3 million), A Silent Voice (Shochiku) WK6 09 (06) ¥41,000,000 ($400,000), -37%, ¥200,000,000 ($1.8 million), Gantz: 0 (Toho Video Division) WK2 10 (07) ¥33,000,000 ($320,000), -34%, ¥1,250,000,000 ($12.0 million), Sully (Warner Bros.) WK5>Your Name. is going to claim its ninth-consecutive week atop the box office this weekend, and based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales for today (up near 20%), it may just experience a weekend increase as well.
Makoto Shinkai's uber-blockbuster smash surpassed Miyazaki's Ponyo on Monday to become the 10th highest-grossing film of all-time, and also surpassed Cameron's Avatar two days later on Wednesday to become the 9th highest-grossing film of all-time. It's going to exceed ¥16 billion (~$155 million) come Sunday, selling over 12.5 million admissions after nine weeks in release.
>All the openers consist of your typical mediocre/dump releases that October, one of the weakest months of the year, is known for. Star Trek Beyond is looking at the best opening among them, but a debut of ¥200 million or a bit more ($2-2.5 million) is as high it'll go. However, while the opening itself isn't exciting, it may edge out Star Trek Into Darkness' ¥197 million debut to achieve the best start in the franchise. If it does, just add it to the ever growing list, right after Jason Bourne, of franchise records that have been broken over the past couple years in the market.

Makoto Shinkai's uber-blockbuster surpassed both Ponyo and Avatar before heading into the weekend frame, becoming the ninth-highest grossing film of all-time, and is closing in on the all-time top 10 attended films of all-time with over 12 million admission. After this weekend, it likely exceeded 12.5 million admissions (#12/13 all-time).
>Star Trek Beyond didn't perform as well as pre-sales indicated, and unless estimates are significatly off and/or its avg. ticket price is notably high, it probably debuted below Star Trek Into Darkness. According to my estimates, it's going to be down 18/19% compared to its predecessor - not bad, but a little disappointing considering how frequent franchise records have fallen the past couple years in the market.
