IMO the movies are already superior to the children's book serving as source material.

The Hunger Games is proof of that.

But really, I have no idea what those numbers mean. Nothing adds up to get that estimate figure..

The same 2nd weekend in this case means much better number for DOS given that it is not yet released in 3 markets including Japan. Not only that its a slight better drop than the last movie in OS markets.

Hope that it does better than last one to catch up for $1b mark. Its going to drop about $40m domestic so it needs to cover atleast that much in OS markets.

Thank you.

Wow, so they have the same 2nd weekend? Pretty impressive for Smaug.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
$135.4 million / $209 million
$97.4 million [56 markets] ($278.4 million) / $406 million

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
$138 million / $222.6 million
$96 million [59 markets] ($288.5 million) / $438.6 million

The Desolation of Smaug increased by $1.4 million over estimates, and opens in Australia, Poland and Iceland this weekend. That leaves Vietnam (January 3rd), China (February 8th), and Japan (February 28th) on the upcoming schedule.

That's GREAT news for it. Form the current markets itself it should outgross Hobbit and hopefully Australia provides it the needed push and give it another $10m extra. China and hopefully Japan carries it through $1b WW mark.

It will still be a struggle for $1b WW total.

It should be able to match the first film here in Oz. I don't think it can make 10m more. Maybe 2-3m more but that's it.

I just realized that first one made about $44m from Australia. If from the current markets it makes equal to last movie (which is looking highly likely with the current holds) then equaling $44m from Australia should be good enough though I do believe it might not hold on AS WELL from here on given the horde of Christmas releases though NONE of them is looking AS PROMISING as Hobbit.

Looks like BOM hasn't yet updated the OS total for this, they are generally very poor in tracking late updates.

Fueled by foreign fans, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” has crossed the $500 million mark in worldwide grosses.

“Smaug,” co-produced by New Line and MGM, hit the milestone in two weeks after its day-and-date launch in nearly all markets.

Peter Jackson’s tentpole has been leading the U.S. market ever since with grosses crossing the $160 million mark as of Thursday, when it took in over $10 million in its 14th day.

Internationally, “Smaug” has eclipsed $340 million in 57 markets, led by strong U.K. grosses that have been on a par with “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” ‘Smaug” opened in Australia on Boxing Day on Thursday with $4.9 million.

The actual total was $504 million — $160.5 million domestically and $343.5 million internationally with Warner Bros. domestic distribution topper Dan Fellman predicting a strong run for several more weeks.

“Peter Jackson has delivered the perfect holiday treat for moviegoers,” he said. “We anticipate that the film will continue to have terrific playability well into the new year as more people join in the adventure or return to experience it again and again.”

The impressive foreign box office for “Smaug” mirrors that of the first “Hobbit” film, which took in over 70% of its coin internationally with $714 million to go along with a U.S. cume of $303 million. “An Unexpected Journey” is the 19th highest worldwide and one of only 20 films to crack the $1 billion worldwide mark.

“Smaug” opens in China on Feb 21 and in Japan on Feb 28.

Sadly I've already seen it, so I won't be going again. But I am glad it's having a Chinese release. It deserves it so much as this franchise is fantastic.

As for its worldwide cume, to me that doesn't sound too impressive. We all know that the first two weeks of any box office run takes in most of the gross, so to have $500m after two weeks is not great. It won't crack $1b now, and it looks like it will earn A LOT less with about $800m worldwide on the cards.

I suppose that's good for filler. ;)

So that's $62m this week till Thursday with just Australian OD (the entire weekend yet to come). Great bump from holidays. Let's see what it does this weekend. Hoping for it to stay flat this weekend for another $100m which would give its 3 week total to $625m+ WW.

Not sure where you get that number from. Overseas it's performing almost identically to the first film, with some slight increases. Even if the domestic tally falls 30 million short of the first film, there is no way it's going to lose another 170 million overseas.

It's traveling towards 1 billion, give or take.

Just seems far off right now. Granted, I haven't looked at the first film to compare.

Hoping with the actuals Hobbit crosses $100m mark again this weekend. Its on pace over weekends with the movie and this WEEK will be the key. It has to gain on that $41m OS lag from the previous movie a bit. It still hasn't opened in Japan where the first movie was playing at the same time. So there is another expected $19m boost from Japan. There is still an additional of holiday boost for this movie as per the dates.

Quote:
Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is keeping pace with An Unexpected Journey. The second entry in The Hobbit trilogy collected $98.3 million from 15,800 screens in 62 overseas markets this weekend, an 18% drop from the previous weekend. Smaug has now grossed $423.8 million overseas and $614.1 million worldwide.

The Desolation of Smaug earned $12.8 million in Australia after a strong Boxing Day premiere. The film finished the weekend in first place with a 51% marketshare among the top 5 releases in Australia. Smaug jumped 8% in Germany to take $15.8 million from 1,460 screens. The strong showing in Germany boosted the film's market total up to $61.3 million, making it the biggest release of 2013 in Germany. The film is also the top grosser of 2013 in Sweden with $14.3 million.

Other top performers for The Desolation of Smaug include the United Kingdom ($9M Weekend, $48M Cume), France ($8.8M Weekend, $38.4M Cume), and Russia ($6.1M Weekend, $28.9M Cume). The film will be released in China on February 21, 2014 and Japan on Febraury 28, 2014.

While they are not mentioning it, this one dropped from $18.6m to $12.8m in Australia I believe.

It's a bit hard to say at this stage. The last did 22.8m from Dec 26 to jan 2.
Haven't seen a numbers breakdown for AUJ or Smaug yet so we have to wait until the end of the week. It would have went down a little though.
