Re: Japan Box Office: Sell-Out Watch (Star Wars v. Yo-Kai Wa
The exchange rate is a lot less favorable right now than it was in Summer 2005 (about 9% worse), so it'll have to see an increase in local currency to do so.
The good news, though, is that I'm thinking The Force Awakens will comfortably outgross Revenge of the Sith and even Attack of the Clones, and then go on to challenge The Phantom Menace.
It should be the first live-action film since Alice in Wonderland in 2010 to gross over ¥10 billion (which is a little over $80 million currently).

We should be in for a healthy weekend this week, likely the strongest since August thanks to the nice eight wide releases over the past seven days.
>Orange is currently outpacing September's No Longer Heroine by a comfortable margin, and is ahead of Spectre so far today, so it's very likely to debut atop the box-office this weekend. I'm not convinced that it'll break the ¥300 million mark over the weekend yet, but it'll certainly come very close if it misses.
The live-action shoji manga (teen romance) films have been very popular over the past year, with Ao Haru Ride, Strobe Edge, and No Longer Heroine all performing above the average performance for the genre, and Orange looks to keep the winning streak going as we head into 2016.
>Living With My Mother has a chance to win on Saturday, thanks to its stage greetings, but I expect it'll fall behind the competition on Sunday. Its morning/afternoon ticket sales are quite good, as to be expected from a Yoji Yamada film since they tend to skew very old, but its evening/night business will probably be slow.
>Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars is unlikely to open outside the range of the last half-dozen or so films, but it could edge out the debuts of the three other releases over the past year. The franchise has fallen from its peak around 2011/2012, though it's been consistent in its more recent earnings.
Special Note: In terms of admissions, Spectre, Living With My Mother, and Kamen Rider are probably going to be in a very close race. Based on my weekend estimates above, all three films are targeting 170,000-180,000 admissions.
There isn't much to discuss about the weekend's holdovers aside from Girls und Panzer. Its pre-sales heading into the weekend are more than double last weekend's, so it's likely having some sort of giveaway or fan event occurring. However, with fewer seating/showtimes, and the pre-sales likely making up the overwhelming majority of the weekend's ticket sales, the weekend increase shouldn't be that high.

>Orange managed to win Saturday, and is in store for a nice weekend. Its first day is almost 10% higher than September's No Longer Heroine, the most-recent shojo manga release, so it's still on track for a debut in first place with around ¥300 million.
>Living With My Mother is performing very well, stronger than several of Yoji Yamada's more recent films, and could earn itself a second place debut, ahead of Spectre.
And speaking of Spectre, it's having a good second weekend, on track for a sub-30% or even sub-25% drop. Unless it experiences a steep decline next week, it's more than likely, I believe, to outgross Skyfall to become the highest-grossing 007 film.
>Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars is off to a promising start, up 3% over this past summer's release on the first day. While it's a minimal increase, it's an increase nonetheless meaning the franchise will continue to remain stable.
Overall, this is shaping up to be a very good weekend with all the openers either meeting or exceeding expectations, and the holdovers performing nicely, too.

Re: Japan Box Office: 2016 Preview (Japanese Films)
2016 Preview - Part 1 (Japanese Films) Ten Potential Blockbusters and Yearly Top 10 Candidates
Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan (March 5th)
The 36th installment in the Doraemon film franchise is shaping up to be one of the, if not simply the, biggest film in the series.
Nobita and the Birth of Japan serves as a remake of the 1989 release, which still holds the record as the most-attended Doraemon film (4.2 million admissions). And with how well the franchise has been doing over the last few years, coming very close to ¥4 billion and 3.5 million admissions last year and the year before, next year's release should deliver.
Assassination Classroom: Graduation (March 25th)
Director Eiichiro Hasumi and the cast of the first film return next year with this much anticipated sequel.
Assassination Classroom grossed ¥2.77 billion with almost 2.5 million admissions this past year, and judging by its surprisingly above average legs and being Yahoo!'s most-searched term of 2015, was met with excitment amongst fans of the series. Manga sales have also remaind very good over the past year, so interest in the series certainly hasn't wained, and with the second season of the anime also debuting before the second film, interest will remain high.
Normally I wouldn't be predicting a sequel like this to match or exceed the box-office figures of the original film, they often don't, but the momentum isn't slowing, and may in fact still be growing.
Detective Conan: Pitch Black Nightmare (April 16th)
I wouldn't normally highlight an annual franchise like Detective Conan, but this one is certainly worth mentioning.
The Detective Conan franchise has been growing bigger and bigger over the past few years, with the last three films all breaking the franchise opening weekend and total records, and 2015's release approached blockbuster levels with its opening (¥874 million) and total (¥4.48 billion).
And next year's film, Pitch Black Nightmare, marks the 20th release and 20th anniversary of the film franchise. The film will feature the secretive syndicate Black Organization, the main antagonists of the entire series. If any Detective Conan film is to achieve a debut over ¥1 billion, and achieve blockbuster status (¥5 billion), it'll be this one.
Terra Formars (April 29th)
Takashi Miike was chosen to helm the live-action adaptation of the popular sci-fi action manga, Terra Formars, and with Warner Bros.'s success of releasing local films this decade, this one should perform pretty nicely as it's being released over the lucrative Golden Week frame.
The film was filmed in Iceland, and stars Hideaki Ito as Shokichi Komachi. The first film in a likely series of films will be adapting the Bugs 2 arc of the manga.
One Piece Film Gold (July 23rd)
The newest entry in the One Piece film series opens on July 23rd. It'll be the third film with author, Eiichiro Oda, on board as producer. The last two films involving Eiichiro Oda were huge successes, with One Piece Film Z selling over 1 million tickets and earning ¥1.37 billion in its opening weekend in December of 2012, and went on to earn ¥6.87 billion and sell over 5 million admissions. The One Piece brand is still as strong as ever to this day, so expect big things from One Piece Film Gold.
It'll be the premier candidate to achieve the biggest opening weekend next year, as it's very likely to exceed 1 million admissions and earn ¥1 billion+, and will also be a strong candidate to become the biggest Summer 2016 film as well.
Advance tickets for One Piece Film Gold go on sale on December 18th, a full 8 months before it releases.
Godzilla: Resurgence (July 29th)
Following the success, and response (both positive and negative), of Gareth Edward's revival of the Godzilla franchise, Toho is ready to reboot their own dormant franchise after 12 years and it begins with Resurgence next July.
The Japanese film industry has made big advances in their special effects over the last couple years, and with Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) directing and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan) assisting with the visual effects, it's bound to at least look impressive.
I'm sure Resurgence will do pretty well, if only out of interest of Godzilla's revival, but its potential is... unpredictable. Godzilla hasn't been that popular enough for several decades now to reach blockbuster status, and I have my doubts about this changing all of a sudden. On the other hand, if he's got the proper look to attract younger moviegoers and is able to generate nostalgia among older moviegoers, it could manage to revitalize the franchise properly this time.
Your Name. (August 2016)
From the young acclaimed director, Shinkai Makoto (5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised to Us in Our Early Days, The Garden Words) comes one of next year's biggest wild cards. Shinkai Makoto, along with Mamoru Hosoda, has been eyed as a candidate to succeed Hayao Miyazaki as Japan's leading animation maestro.
Makoto has made a name for himself among animation fans, and anime fans from abroad, but none of his films have been released through a major distributor, until next August that is. Toho, the country's biggest distributor, will be releasing his latest film. Also attached to the film is famed animation director, Ando Masashi, who's previous animation work includes Miyazaki's Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away; the late Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika; and more recently, Studio Ghibli's likely final film, When Marnie Was There.
There's a lot of potential here and while I don't think this will be a blockbuster, rather I think it'll be good sized hit, and the film that propels Makoto as a recognizable household name and draw for the future.
A Man Called Pirate (December 2016)
Director Takashi Yamazaki returns next December with the follow-up to his 2013 blockbuster The Eternal Zero.
Based on the best-selling novel "Kaizoku to Yobareta Otoko" by Naoki Hyakuta, the story is about a man who loses everything he's worked for following the events of World War II, and later finds success in the oil industry. Yamazaki has become one of Japan's most popular modern day directors, with nearly all his films achieving both box-office success and critical praise. A Man Called Pirate reunites him with actor Junichi Okada , who also starred in The Eternal Zero.
I don't think it's very reasonable to expect similar results as The Eternal Zero, considering its performance is one of the best ever, but it's pretty certain to achieve a good amount of success.
Yo-Kai Watch 3 (December 2016)
The second Yo-Kai Watch film hasn't even been released yet, but Yo-Kai Watch 3 has already been announced and is set for December next year.
Distributor Toho has made a few past attempts to launch a successful annual franchise in the month of December, as they have an annual franchise for every other major holiday month. None of those attempts ever paid off until last December, when Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! broke records.
It's unlikely the franchise will be able to maintain the record breaking levels of the first Yo-Kai Watch film, though it appears more than strong enough to sustain the planned annual release schedule every December. The third film's success is rather unpredictable at the moment, but we'll get an idea on how it may perform when Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! opens next week.
Yo-Kai Watch 3, the video game (image above), will also be released next year and be set in America, so it'll be interesting to see if the third film goes this route for international purposes as well.
Death Note (TBA 2016)
A new live-action Death Note film, currently being promoted as the "forbidden sequel", will be released sometime next year (I'm guessing Silver Week in September), but this time around, it'll be an all new story! At the helm of this project is director Shinsuke Sato (Gantz, Library Wars), but no other crew or cast members have been announced yet.
In the new film's story, the present-day, highly advanced information society is beset by global cyber-terrorism in 2016. New charismatic figures, who inherited the DNA of Light (previously played Tatsuya Fujiwara) and the detective L (previously played by Ken'ichi Matsuyama), emerge. The successors of the two geniuses will wage a war over six Death Notes on Earth (ANN).
The "six Death Note rule" was mentioned in the original series, but it was never expanded upon in the story. Death Note remains popular in Japan, with their being a recent stage play, and a successful TV drama adaptation in terms of ratings and reviews of the original story, so a new film should perform well. The first three films, adaptations of the original story, were very successful, with the second film even achieving blockbuster status of ¥5 billion.

For it is from our hearts they come, and to our hearts they shall return.” “We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.” “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” “You have to pretend you get an endgame. >Orange managed to see a very nice increase on Sunday, up about 30%, and won the weekend pretty handily. It may have exceeded 250,000 admissions over the weekend, which should be plenty to break the ¥300 million mark. It's also likely to be unaffected by Star Warsand Yo-Kai Watch next weekend, since it appeals quite exclusively to teens/young adult and couples, so legs should be very strong, too.
>Spectre held on nicely and avoids dropping to third or even fourth place. It probably fell just shy of 200,000 admissions (190,000+), grossing a bit over ¥250 million in its second weekend. Unless it experiences a significant decline next week, it has a good chance to outgross Skyfall to become the highest-grossing 007 film.
>Living With My Mother retained most of its Saturday business on Sunday, despite the solid stage greeting events yesterday, and delivered a solid third place debut. Yoji Yamada's latest should have sold around 170,000 admissions for a gross near ¥225 million. This would be an improvement over many of Yamada's more recent releases.
>Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars will only come in fourth place this weekend in terms of gross due to its low avg. ticket price, but in terms of admissions, it may be have sold enough to come in third place. The 52nd installment in the Kamen Rider series should have also sold around 170,000 admissions, and exceeding ¥200 million.
Overall, this is a great weekend, and the strongest since August even if actuals would be lower across the board.

>Orange debuts atop the box-office, delivering the biggest opening weekend for a shojo/josei (romance) manga adaptation in December since Nodame Cantabile back in 2009.
Starring Tao Tsuchiya and Kento Yamazaki in the lead roles, the film sold 261,179 admissions across 303 screens over the weekend. For some recent comparisons, the debut is 9% behind last Spring's Strobe Edge (which eventually grossed ¥2.32 billion ($19.3 million)), and 17% ahead of No Longer Heroine (which has grossed ¥2.42 billion ($20 million)) based on estimates.
Orange should have no problem exceeding ¥2 billion, and could reach ¥2.5 billion ($20 million+) on 2 million admissions.
>Spectre falls to second place, but held very well over its second weekend. After two weeks in release, plus previews, it has exceeded 1 million admissions. I've said it often, but again, there's a good chance it can outgross Skyfall (¥2.75 billion) to become the highest-grossing 007 film.
>Living With My Mother, the latest film from renowned director Yoji Yamada, delivered an impressive start in third place, and marks Yamada's best debut in three years.
Playing on 336 screens, the Yoshinaga Sayuri lead film sold a nice 197,460 admissions. Yamada's films almost always have excellent legs, and I doubt this one will be any different. It'll make a run for the ¥2 billion milestone.
>Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars had to settle for a fourth place start, but it's far from a disappointment for the franchise and Toei.
The 52nd entry in the long-running series sold 181,551 admissions on 292 screens, delivering the best opening for a Kamen Rider December release since 2013, and the strongest opening over the past year in the franchise by 8%. Most films in the series have been struggling to reach the ¥1 billion milestone as of late, but this one should get there comfortably.
As mentioned yesterday, this weekend was the strongest Top 10 since August.

Re: Japan Box Office: Sellout Watch (Star Wars v Yo-Kai Watc
On a related note... I'm not going to track the Toho Cinema in Shinjuku, since just about anything can sellout there even though it has showtimes most weekends running for 21 hours (7am-3am).
However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has 52! showtimes on Saturday at that theater. That's clearly a record, and I bet most if not all sellout considering it's Shinjuku.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened yesterday in Hollywood to much fanfare. The Straw Hat Pirates also showed support for the premiere in official artwork of the crew cosplaying as characters from the sci-fi franchise. The tie-in was due to a special trailer for One Piece Film Gold that will screen prior to the Japanese premiere on Friday. Advanced tickets for One Piece Film Gold are also going on sale that day. (ANN)
One Piece Film Gold opens on July 23rd, and as the article mentions, advance tickets will go on sale this Friday. The film is already scheduled for 335 locations (12% more than the previous film). The last film, One Piece Film Z, exceeded 1.1 million admissions in its debut three years ago (a new record at the time), and went on to sell more than 5.5 million admissions.

Re: Japan Box Office: Sellout Watch (Star Wars v Yo-Kai Watc
The third update in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens v Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! showdown this weekend will be posted tonight.
Toho Cinemas have added their full weekend screens/showtime counts, so we'll know what the seating/showtime battle between the two is really looking like. It's worth noting, though, that both films have sold through well over 50% of their available tickets for Saturday at several locations, so those locations could add some additional screens/showtimes before the weekend begins.
I'll be able to say with confidence, perhaps tomorrow, as to whether the weekend will become the biggest of all-time or not. It's looking quite possible that both films will exceed 1 million admissions.

The third, and second to last, sellout watch update will be posted tonight.
All the showtimes that were marked with (/), meaning they were newly added showtimes without ticket reservations, have since been available for reservations since last night.

Re: Japan Box Office: Sellout Watch (Star Wars v Yo-Kai Watc
Only two films have opened with 1 million+ admissions this decade, the first Yo-Kai Watch (1.48 million) and One Piece Film Z (1.14 million), and they happen to also be December openers on the this exact weekend. And thankfully, I tracked them at eight of the same locations, so the comparisons should be pretty good.
At the same point in time, Thursday at ~12:00PM, ~44 hours before the first showings begin:
17,333/45,608 (38.0%), 10 Theaters/141 Showings - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) 11,672/30,112 (38.8%), 10 Theaters/105 Showings - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! The first Yo-Kai Watch went on to reach 83% capacity for its entire opening weekend, while One Piece Film Z reportedly exceeded 70% capacity for its opening weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office: Sellout Watch (Star Wars v Yo-Kai Watc
Usual Locations - Saturday Seating/Showtimes (66% of Market)
#Seats [#Theaters/#Showtimes] - Film 709,486 [236/2,737] - Star Wars: The Force Awakens 531,684 [231/1,739] - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!
Both films are playing wider than any film of the past year (ahead of Jurassic World), with Star Wars: The Force Awakens potentially playing wider than any film ever. Its theater count of 370 (236 accounted for above) is the highest I've ever seen, and it's likely playing on more than 1,000 screens, which would make it only the second film to play on 1,000+ screens.
I'll have the final update in the sellout watch I've been posting all week up tonight.

Re: Japan Box Office: Sellout Watch (Star Wars v Yo-Kai Watc
At the same point in time, Friday at ~12:00PM, ~20 hours before the first showings begin:
20,171/45,608 (44.2%), 10 Theaters/141 Showings - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) 14,359/30,112 (47.7%), 10 Theaters/105 Showings - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (2015) __________________ 28,661/40,834 (70.2%), 9 Theaters/95 Showings - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (2014) 21,745/35,427 (61.3%), 9 Theaters/81 Showings - One Piece Film Z (2012)
Based on the the current advance ticket sales and the comparisons to this decade's only two films to open over 1 million admissions, the first Yo-Kai Watch (1.48 million) and One Piece Film Z (1.14 million), my early predictions for this weekend are:
Early Weekend Projections: 1,100,000-1,200,000 admissions - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) 850,000-950,000 admissions - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (2015)
Star Wars VII is looking pretty likely to exceed 1 million admissions. All the prequels exceeded 1 million admissions (1.1-1.36 million), too, but they very likely had previews included, which Episode VII doesn't.
Yo-Kai Watch 2 doesn't look like it's going to make it to 1 million admissions this weekend unless it sees a significant increase on Sunday. That increase could happen, though, as some locations that have Star Wars VII on their biggest screens on Saturday are giving them to Yo-Kai Watch 2 on Sunday.
As long as the top holdovers don't collapse, this is definitely looking to become the biggest weekend of all-time.

So a 35% decline in a year for Yôkai Watch ? That's pretty significant. If its total sees a similar decline then it will pull around 5 billion yen.

Pretty expected, though. You can't really improve upon achieving 83% capacity over the weekend frame. And the fact it could still reach 1 million admissions, though unlikely, is still staggering. It'd be only the fourth domestic film to do it.

I was expecting a decline but comparatively Pokemon declined by only 15% in totals between its first and its second movie so 35% seems quite rough. Maybe it will have better legs to soften the blow ?

Re: Japan Box Office: Sellout Watch (Star Wars v Yo-Kai Watc
Remember, though, that last year Yo-Kai Watch was massively popular and in its peak/boom year. You could certainly make a valid case that it was/still is bigger than Pokemon in Japan in the first breakout year period (bigger movie, higher game sales, merchandise sales, etc.).
I'm sure legs will be a bit stronger this year. The first Yo-Kai Watch sold 1.14 million tickets before it even opened, almost delivering the biggest weekend of all-time in admissions (of all-time if you exclude previews for The Matrix Reloaded).
Also, this year it has to deal with Star Wars. It doesn't provide any competition, since they're completely different demographics, but theaters are having to split the biggest screens between them this weekend.
Last year, Yo-Kai Watch was able to claim all the largest screens for itself.

You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.” "Paper is dead without words / Ink idle without a poem / All the world dead without stories."
