The Japanese multi-media phenomenon debuted in 2013 and has effectively dethroned Pokemon from its long reign since, finally began its journey into the West last month with the release of the anime on Disney, the video game releasing this week, and with an extensive toy-line being released by Hasbro next year:
TV/ANIME
The anime debuted on Disney XD last month, with new episodes airing every Monday at 5 p.m. ET/PT:
They also translated the incredibly popular Japanese original opening song, 'Gera Gera Po', by King Cream Soda, which has earned well over 100 million views on YouTube, as well as the popular Dream5 song, 'Exercise', the ending song (also over 100 million hits) for the US release, rather than excluding them or providing original English songs, which is rarely done for anime that manage find their way onto US television:

VIDEO GAMES
The first video game in the series was also released today, November 6th, in the US with GameStop including a special Jibanyan pin to those that placed a pre-order for the title. The game is also featured in a 2DS special bundle for $99.99 this holiday season.
The first game entry has received mostly positive reviews so far (78 on MetaCritic).
TOYS/MERCHANDISE
Hasbro will also be releasing toys and merchandise beginning early next year in the West, with pre-orders already being available for the incredibly popular Yo-Kai Watch item itself:

For it is from our hearts they come, and to our hearts they shall return.” “We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.” “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” “You have to pretend you get an endgame. We'll see how it does but I think it's too Japanese to really succeed overseas. Pokemon's strength was and still is its universality.

>Good for both Mozu and Grasshopper. They were neck-and-neck most of the day (seldom did 1,000 admissions separate them until the evening showings), but Mozu pulled ahead in the evening.
>I think Grasshopper will win Sunday, so this will remain a close contest to see which film debuts at #1. Both films are aiming for ¥200 million or a bit more, respectable for this time of year.
>Everest is performing fairly well, and Japan should end up one of its strongest overseas markets. I see it trailing just UK, Russia, and Germany at the moment.
>The Monuments Men, just barely a wide release, makes the Top 10 here, and I believe it'll manage to crack the weekend Top 10 now. Terminal on the other hand, not so likely.

I've been watching the English version of the anime to compare it to the original, and they aren't really editing anything out from the original show, which is pretty surprising (especially since it's airing on Disney). This is both a positive and a negative. Many episodes of Pokemon were edited for their English release prior to becoming a worldwide success.
There are some things in the original anime, a few scenes that have already occurred in English (Manjimutt, as a character himself, and his antics), that may irk some parents and have American children (or Western children in general) asking questions or becoming confused.
The TV ratings are decent enough, so far, though. After 9 episodes, its viewership is averaging a bit shy of 300,000. That's pretty much the standard for Disney XD, though it's solid for an imported product without an existing fanbase like the majority of their shows.
Nothing compares to Gravity Falls on the network which typically earns 1 million+, and Star Wars Rebels regularly hits 500,000+, but most of the other Disney XD cartoons (Marvel entries included) average 400,000 or less.
Realistically, it won't be as popular as Pokemon in the Western world. A more reasonable goal would be reaching success levels similar to that of Digimon or Beyblade. I'm also currently playing through the English game, and fans of Pokemon or other similar games (heck, even Animal Crossing with the bug catching and fishing) should enjoy it.

>Mozu also came out on top on Sunday against Grasshopper, and with a 10,000+ admission advantage at the usual locations (now 66% of the market), it's very likely to have won the weekend. Shochiku came pretty close, but just couldn't beat a Toho film in the end.
Mozu should have debuted comfortably above ¥200 million, while Grasshopper looks to havee opened right around the mark.
>Everest increased on Sunday, and while Sunday increases aren't uncommon (they're usually common), it's still notable for a weekend opener. Nearly 75% of its theater count is accounted for above, so that must be considered before giving any weekend estimate.
>The Monuments Men still looks to have earned itself a Top 10 debut, but just barely since Library Wars will be ahead of it nationally, and Bakuman is reasonably close to remain a contender for the 10th spot, too.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (11/07-08)
>Mozu performed slightly better than another recent TV drama with similar ratings, August's S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future, and should come in above ¥200 million.
>Grasshopper is kind of on the cusp of the ¥200 million mark, but I'm going to predict that it narrowly missed. If it does miss, that'd be a little disappointing, but on the positive side of things, it achieved the best opening weekend for a Shochiku live-action release this year either way.
>Everest was heavily marketed as a 3D event (3D is even in the Japanese title of the film), so if it managed a decent 3D share, its actual should see a nice uptick from the current estimate.
>Bakuman and The Monuments Men are very close at the bottom of the Top 10. It's hard to say which one will rank 10th tomorrow.
The holdovers suffered some harsh drops, though they were expected coming off last Sunday's discount day and Tuesday's national holiday. Estimates coming off such weeks can be off, so hopefully a few (I'm looking at you, Galaxy Turnpike) manage to improve a bit in the morning.

>Mozu, a joint collaboration from TBS and WOWOW, debuted atop the weekend box office, once again displaying distributor Toho's dominance over the market.
The police drama novel turned TV drama sold 170,374 tickets over the weekend across 322 screens. This bests the opening weekend of another recent police TV drama film, S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future by 6%, and should allow the film to achieve the ¥1 billion milestone, but not much more.
>Grasshopper settles for a second place debut, and while missing the top spot and failing to reach the ¥200 million mark, it still delivered Shochiku's best debut this year for a live-action release.
The film adaptation of the best-selling novel "Gurasuhoppa" by Kotaro Isaka, sold 147,275 tickets over the weekend on 314 screens. It's a decent start, but expectations were a bit higher than where it landed since it'll probably just barely make the ¥1 billion milestone.
>Everest comes in at third place, and opened quite well, and probably higher than Toho-Towa was expecting given its modest screen count. There's a chance it'll also reach the ¥1 billion milestone, giving 2015 yet another successful film.
The true story 3D event managed to sell almost 100,000 tickets (96,220) over the weekend frame on 424 screens (just 225 locations, however), bringing its 3-day total admissions up to 120,301. The film also achieved an incredibly high avg. ticket price of ¥1,705 over the weekend, indicating a very strong 3D share (probably over 80%), which is about 10% higher than the normal 3D release.
>The Monuments Men finally reached the shores of Japan, and actually earned itself a fairly decent debut.
The small independent distributor, Presido, picked up the film and must be pleased with it making the Top 10 and selling 42,119 tickets over the weekend across only 152 screens. This isn't anything to really celebrate, but for Presido, it's quite good.
Outside the Top 10:
>Terminal posted a poor opening, debuting in 12th place on ¥35,293,400 ($287,000) with 28,979 admissions on 200 screens. Toei continues to struggle in the live-action film category. >No Longer Heroine exceeded 2 million admissions after 8 weeks in release.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2015 Charts Updated
Galaxy Turnpike exceeded the ¥1 billion mark on Wednesday, giving 2015 a total of 56 confirmed films (35 Japanese, 21 Imported) that have reached the milestone so far this box office year (Dec.-Nov.).
2015 is now tied in fourth for having the highest number of ¥1 billion earners ever, and with a couple more films this month (could be as many as three or four) that should reach the mark, along with the chances of a couple from earlier this year that haven't been reported, the year is looking at possibly 60+ films.
There's even the chance that it could beat 2005's current record:
“Gods are great ... but the heart is greater. This will be an unspectacular weekend, and the remainder of November this year will also be uneventful. The month was largely ignored, with quite a number of notable films being released in December, which looks to be very strong this year..
>The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Last Knights will be aiming to take down Mozu, but neither film is likely up to that challenge.
>Harmony is looking to do very well in its limited release, and should manage a debut in the Top 10 despite burning off some demand from its Friday debut.
>Penguins of Madagascar somehow managed to get a theatrical release, through Fox and not an independent studio no less. This marks the first Dreamworks Animation film to receive a theatrical release, even if it's limited, since 2012's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted!

That Last Knights poster is awesome. I am quite surprised it's getting such a release in Japan. Are either Clive Owen or Morgan Freeman big draws in Japan? Seems strange otherwise for it to receive a theatrical release since it was dumped almost everywhere else.

Morgan Freeman is recognizable in the market, and while I wouldn't label him a "big draw" here, the majority of films he has starred in have found success in Japan. None of them have earned anything significant, but they do have consistent performances.

Is that largely because he stars in big ensemble movies (The Dark Knight, Now You See Me etc.) or because he's well-liked?

If I do a quick look back at his films from the mid-2000s through today, nearly all of them have earned between ¥1-2 billion, a very consistent track record, including all the ensemble films. So I'd say he, himself, is a draw and responsible for most of their success.
The films that have have broke out of that range, earning a bit more or sometimes significantly more, are those with a bigger name attached to them (like Angelina Jolie in Wanted, or some directed by Clint Eastwood).

Cool. Thanks. So he basically just picks good projects, and because of that has become a liked, stable draw. Perhaps a supporting sign of a quality film.

There isn't much to discuss about this weekend. It's a pretty dull weekend ahead that Mozu is likely to repeat at #1.
The box office will remain uneventful through the rest of November, but December looks stronger than usual with each weekend having more than one notable film scheduled. All of the studios wanted to release their key films closer to New Year this year.

There was an issue collecting ticket sales from Kinezo Cinemas yesterday, so there's 8/9% of theaters unaccounted for above, so the usual locations is representing more like 55-60% of the market for Saturday.
The weekend is performing as expected, though the openers are looking to come in on the low-end of most expectations.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is going to struggle to earn that Top 3 debut. And the majority Last Knight's ticket sales came from morning/afternoon showtimes, which means it's skewing toward older/senior citizen crowd (its avg. ticket price will probably be low as a result, too). Harmony is harder to gauge since its ticket prices could be very high, but the admissions aren't really there to give it a debut of perhaps barely in the Top 10.

>The Man from U.N.C.L.E. managed to edge past Everest at the usual locations in admissions to earn that third place rank, but given the very high avg. ticket price of the latter film, I don't think it'll see a Top 3 debut in terms of gross.
>Last Knights largely disappoints, and may have missed a Top 10 debut. I would compare its performance here to other markets, but I can't seem to find any box office numbers from any of them. I'm assuming it was a limited release in the few markets it was released in? If so, Japan could be its best market despite this poor start.
>BIGBANG's live concert broadcast in Tokyo on Saturday sold through almost 50% of its theater tickets.
Weekend Estimates will be up later, and expect the drops above to increase a few percentage points. Saturday was a Toho Cinemas Discount Day, so weekend avg. ticket prices will be down just a bit.

Actuals are up all-around from estimates this weekend, though it's still one of the weakest weekends of the year.
>Mozu held onto the top spot quite easily, slipping just over 30%, selling a further 122,982 admissions in its second weekend. After nine-days in release, the TV drama adaptation has sold 476,353 tickets.
The TV drama adaptation is on track to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone, increasing its lead over S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future, now up 18% over its nine-day tally (up from 14% last weekend).
>Grasshopper holds steady in second place, selling 104,974 tickets in its second weekend of release. After nine-days in release, it's sold 378,718 tickets. I didn't like its chances of reaching the ¥1 billion mark after its debut last weekend, but its nine-day total should be high enough for it to achieve the milestone, even if it must crawl there.
>The Man from U.N.C.L.E. saw a nice jump from estimates, though it wasn't quite enough to bat Everest to earn itself a Top 3 debut, instead having to settle for a fourth place start.
Guy Ritchie's film adaptation of the popular 60's British television show sold 87,433 admissions over the weekend across 299 screens. The so-so opening weekend is within most expectations.
>The Intern continues its surprising performance in the market, exceeding the ¥1.5 billion mark on 1,160,725 admissions after six-weeks in release.
>Last Knights misses the Top 10, debuting with a disappointing 23,323 admissions on 204 screens over the weekend. It wasn't expected to do much, but the 200+ screen count is an indication that distributor Gaga was hoping for at least a Top 10 ranking.
