Usual Locations - Weekend Admissions (43% of Market)

Hourly Updates - Saturday
10AM -> 11AM - 12PM -> 1PM -> 2PM -> 3PM -> 4PM -> 5PM -> 7PM -> Final

9,532 -> 15,021 -> 22,087 -> 30,484 -> 39,646 -> 54,328 -> 64,538 -> 68,419 -> 82,508 -> 105,411 - The Boy and the Beast (NEW)
7,775 -> 10,619 -> 16,920 -> 26,203 -> 29,614 -> 39,383 -> 46,272 -> 50,048 -> 59,697 -> 80,332 - Terminator: Genysis (NEW)
4,160 -> 5,748 -> 9,876 -> 13,433 -> 14,974 -> 25,986 -> 29,257 -> 31,443 -> 37,935 -> 49,606 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 2)

Hourly Updates - Sunday
10AM -> 11AM - 12PM -> 1PM -> 2PM -> 3PM -> 4PM -> 5PM -> 7PM -> Final

11,330 -> 19,951 -> 30,375 -> 42,889 -> 54,234 - The Boy and the Beast (NEW)
10,379 -> 13,800 -> 22,288 -> 33,963 -> 37,607 - Terminator: Genysis (NEW)
5,950 -> 8,202 -> 15,189 -> 20,112 -> 24,923 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 2)

If The Boy and the Beast keeps this up through the evening, it'll easily exceed 100,000 admissions again and likely increase over Saturday with such a large lead. Sunday increases aren't uncommon, but it's always a good sign for openers. 500,000+ admissions is beginning to look doable, which could land it ¥700 million+ over the weekend!

Terminator: Genysis is also doing well for itself. While its Sunday is currently outpacing its Saturday, it's not by a considerable margin, so taking into account Sunday night business being weaker than Saturday night business, it'll probably be pretty flat for the day. Something around 325-350,000 admissions is still looking good, and ¥500 million+ over the weekend.

Avengers: Age of Ultron on the other hand is recovering quite nicely after its rough day yesterday. It's still down around 50% compared to last Sunday, but that's much better than the 60%+ it was down on Saturday. It's still heading for a rough second weekend drop above 50%, I believe, though.

>Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu's latest, The Boy and the Beast, debuts at the top in a big way, opening ~78% higher than Hosoda's previous film, Wolf Children, from three years ago.

The opening isn't quite up to Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli levels, but Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu seem well on their way to achieving that expectation set by the film industry and audiences alike in both critical praise and box office returns. The Boy and the Beast is currently set for release in over 90 countries later this year/early next year via Gaumont.

Hosoda's previous films have achieved excellent multipliers of 11/12 (almost Miyazaki/Ghibli levels), and with the strong reception for The Boy and the Beast, it shouldn't be any different. It has a good chance of exceeding the ¥7 billion ($60 million) milestone projected by distributor Toho, probably enough to claim the Summer box office crown, but let's see if this turns out to be what Princess Mononoke was to Miyazaki/Ghibli for Hosoda/Chizu and goes even higher.

>Terminator: Genysis comes in at a strong second place, and should be within 10/15% of Terminator: Salvation's opening weekend (minus its previews). And with Summer vacation coming up next week and Obon Festival later in its run, it has a decent chance of surpassing Salvation's ¥3.32 billion total.

>Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn't seem likely to have missed a 50%+ second weekend drop, but that's in-line with most Marvel/DC films. Unfortunately it appears just as frontloaded as most other Marvel/DC films, so it's not looking good to reach the ¥4 billion milestone (becoming the first non-Spider-Man film to do so). It still appears on track to exceed The Avenger's ¥3.61 billion total, though.

>The Boy and the Beast, the latest from acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, debuted atop the box-office in its opening weekend, up 82% (79% in admissions) over his previous film, Wolf Children from three years ago, which went on to earn ¥4.22 billion ($53 million) and 3.42 million admissions.

Playing across 457 screens, one of the widest releases ever for a domestic film, it sold 494,170 tickets over the weekend. The film tells the story of Kyuta, a boy living in Shibuya, and Kumatetsu, a lonesome beast from Jutengai, an imaginary world. One day, Kyuta forays into the imaginary world and, as he's looking for his way back, meets Kumatetsu who becomes his spirit guide.

If it follows Hosoda's previous films, and those released by Studio Ghibli during July, a multiplier of 10 or greater is likely. So, the film could finish possibly as high as ¥7 billion ($60 million) with over 5 million admissions, but I have a feeling it could go higher.

And this opening is particularly impressive given Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu are still establishing themselves as a household, mainstream brand, and seeing as it's a truly original film. However, given the strong opening here, it seems Japanese audiences have already begun accepting them as Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's proper successors.

>Terminator: Genisys had to settle for second place, but still delivered an impressive debut, down a reasonable 13% compared to the opening weekend of Terminator: Salvation. And any debut above ¥500 million is considered very strong in the market.

The latest in the popular sci-fi action series sold 352,718 tickets on 737 screens over the weekend, which brought its 3-day total up to 461,590 admissions.

The film faces a lot of upcoming competition (as does everything in release) with the Summer box office season about to really begin, but with decent enough reviews and a prime release frame, it should be able to achieve the ¥3 billion (~$25 million) milestone and I wouldn't rule out it surpassing its predecessor's ¥3.32 billion total.

>Avengers: Age of Ultron falls to third place after it's very surprising opening last weekend, selling 234,553 admissions in its second frame. Generally speaking, a second weekend drop over 50% is very bad (probably comparable to a 65%+ drop in the US), but this has become the norm now for most Marvel/DC properties.

After it's huge opening last weekend, it looked quite likely the latest Avengers would reach the 4 billion milestone, thus becoming the only non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film to achieve the milestone, but now that's looking pretty iffy at best. An adjusted projection would have it finishing closer to ¥3.5 billion (~$30 million), but still with a chance of beating its predecessor's ¥3.61 billion total. This upcoming holiday weekend with three new tentpoles releasing will be the deciding factor.

>Making a surprising, but not so surprising debut in ninth place is the Documentary of Nogizaka 46. It's surprising because it's only playing on 46 screens, but not so due to the girl's very large fanbase. The documentary sold 29,551 admissions over the weekend, selling out or nearly selling out most of its showtimes in the process.

>And finally, the tenth place spot went to Ari no Mama de Itai, another documentary, but this time about all the different beetles that live across the islands of Japan photographed by Kiyoshi Kamoshita.

This is also one of the first domestic films to be released in 3D in quite some time, after the format became a burden for most releases in 2012/2013, so it was released on an impressive 402 screens as a result, but only sold 28,104 admissions over the weekend.

Surprising that Marvel movies have become so frontloaded in Japan. Corpse are there any other small series that are this frontloaded?

The Kamen Rider series is frontloaded. They struggle reaching multipliers of 4 even with holiday support.

There isn't anything else really. Only a handful of wide releases typically fall below a 4 multiplier each year.

So, this upcoming weekend has the potential to be one of the biggest of all-time with three more tentpoles being released just in time for Summer vacation. The mid-July weekend marks the beginning of Summer, and is almost always the biggest weekend of the year (7 of the Top 12 biggest weekends have been from mid-July).

The new openers includes: Hero 2, Inside Out, and Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages.

I'll go into more detail on Thursday when I post the Weekend Preview, but the seating/showtime advantage is currently:

Hero 2 (NEW) > The Boy and the Beast (Week 2) ≥ Inside Out (NEW) > Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW) > Terminator: Genisys (Week 2) > Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3).

I thought you may like this, Algren. ;)

Image

It can be seen at Toho Cinemas in Shinjuku, the recently opened (April) location with the Godzilla display overlooking the theater and nearby hotel.

That theater, by the way, has become one of the busiest in the country. Movies are selling out there all the time, no matter the time or day.

And if anyone's really interested, with the upcoming Summer box office season about to kick in, you can check my twitter for updates on various films. As far as major Hollywood films go, Inside Out, Minions, Jurassic World, and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation all open in the next 4 weeks.

I normally wait to post the seating/showtimes for the usual locations after all the chains have their seating/showtimes available, but with Toho Cinemas being the most important and considering the magnitude of the upcoming weekend, here's the arrangement for this Saturday at Toho Cinemas:

Toho Cinemas - Saturday Seating/Showtimes
Seats [Showtimes] - Film (Week of Release)

147,263 [488] - Hero 2 (NEW)
96,748 [464] - Inside Out (NEW)
87,795 [474] - The Boy and the Beast (Week 2)
72,943 [307] - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW)
69,956 [433] - Terminator: Genisys (Week 2)
56,547 [386] - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3)

Toho Cinemas is the second largest chain the country, operating 21% of the nation's theaters.

Hero 2, as expected, is a very wide release and is on the largest screens at every location. If Toho Cinemas is any indication, it'll be the second widest live-action release this year in terms of seating.

The original film, released in 2007, was one of the biggest domestic live-action films ever, opening above ¥1 billion and grossing over ¥8 billion. I highly doubt the sequel does that well, though. The 8 year gap, certain re-castings and Season 2's TV ratings, while very strong in the low 20% range, were far below Season 1's mid-30% ratings. It's still a contender for biggest live-action film of the year, though.

Inside Out is an interesting one. It's receiving noticeably fewer seats/showtimes than every other major animated release this year (foreign and domestic) opening weekend. It is, however, facing much bigger competition than any other major animated release this year, too.

I believe it's going to perform in-line with Pixar's other original films, Wall-E, Ratatouille and Up. God forbid we have another Brave disaster on our hands, which interesting enough, was up against Mamoru Hosoda's last film, Pokemon, and a major local live-action film, too, just like Inside Out is this year...

Pokemon is also receiving fewer seats/showtimes than it usually does every year, but as mentioned above, competition for those big screens is very tight this summer. But this also means that pre-sales likely weren't impressive again this year. And it doesn't help matters that the opening weekends of the last three films have experienced consecutive drops, so it's understandable.

Hey, bullza! Toei released the final total for Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F in their mid-year report this week. It finished with ¥3.74 billion ($31.1 million) / 2.81 million admissions, up 1.9% from the last updated estimate.

I know you'll want the source for your reference, but you'll need a paid membership to view the actual article since it's on bunkatsushin: bunkatsushin

If you follow me on twitter (@KidCorpse), I tweet about some box office related news that bunkatsushin releases.

Hopefully the increased promotional activities from The Pokemon Company will result in a better performance than last year's film; though the movie slate this year is quite impressive as well.

It also helps that the previews for the film were positive comparatively to last year, so maybe it'll have a better multiplier and reach ¥3 Billion but I'm not holding my breath.

I hope so as well.

If the latest film decreases again after all the marketing it's been receiving, the franchise is definitely on the decline. There is a lot of competition this summer, more so than usual, but past films have performed perfectly fine in other crowded summers before, like in 2010, for example, so any under-performance can't be blamed solely on competition.

Level-5 is releasing new Yokai Watch games so that can impact, minimal or major, Pokemon's OW. I am hoping it reaches ¥3 billion too but considering how weak the films have been performing after the first BW film, I'm not so sure. The marketing seems strong and reception seems favorable, the two things going in for the film so I might peg my estimates higher but ambiguous it remains :funny: . As for Inside Out, I'm expecting some insane legs. Hero 2, we all know will decrease from its predecessor but that's not too troubling and The Boy and the Beast should hold well.

Yeah, seriously.

It seems like Level-5 is intent on destroying Pokemon. They just released the first Yokai Watch movie on DVD last week, and it sold almost 100,000 copies in its first week.

Then, they released the first spin-off Yokai Watch game which sold nearly 700,000 copies in its first week this past week, too! That's crazy strong for a spin-off release.

AND, there's more, it also doesn't help Pokemon's major Yokai Watch problem when advance tickets go on sale for the next movie on July 25th... :zonks:

Welcome to the forum, by the way!

Are you a member at Box Office Theory, Anime News Network (I see people linking this thread there all the time), or twitter?

Insane! Pokemon is definitely going to get weakened considerably by Yokai Watch but internationally, even if Yokai Watch hasn't gone global yet, Pokemon is still churning blockbuster performing titles... breaking previous record setting sales going into it's 20th year and China and the United Kingdom seem tohave just begun embracing the series, LOL. I have faifth Pokemon will rebound, it always has and always will. I mean, the Manaphy movie and Generation 3 films in general did quite bad then Sinnoh churned out $40, $50, and $60 million blockbusters. Black and White's atrocious films, television series, and that simply at loss of words filler arc did something to the series and then Yokai Watch just had to come during a time when many said they lost interest in the anime series and films.

Thank you! I come from Box Office Theory and I got interested in the world of box office after spending countless hours spectating Frozen's run on the Japanese Box Office forum at Box Office Theory. And yeah, we love you, :thumbsup: ! Your posts are always linked and I basically wait every week for your weekly estimates and updates. I actually thought you came from BOT due to there being a Corpse who had a profile picture of I think Judgement Dragon from the Yu-Gi-Oh card games and he posted daily numbers, predictions, and such almost everyday during Frozen's run then he disappeared after one last update during I think Doraemon's run. LOL, intricate memories. :funny:

I have a profile on Box Office Theory and was a semi-regular member for awhile (2013-2014), but keeping both threads here and there updated each week became tiresome. I couldn't simply copy/paste due to the different formats.

If WOKJ doesn't survive come the end of the month, you might see me there all the time soon!
