Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (7th All-Time Weekend)
The guy on Box Office gave his Tuesday estimates and for DBZ he has it at ¥53 million and Conan at ¥54 million. Likewise for Monday the estimates were ¥91 million and ¥93 million respectively.

That's a huge decrease, there's gotta be a reason for that right?

Monday is just a more popular day at the box-office than Tuesday, that's all. :)

Usually it goes: Wednesday > Monday > Friday > Tuesday/Thursday

Yep, it had one of the most impressive openings in awhile (as did Detective Conan), especially when you consider they occurred over the same weekend, and in a time where opening weekends have largely grown weaker this decade while legs have grown stronger.

Wow the Japanese dailies play out very different from USA? Wednesday over Friday? I was told there was some discount on Wednesday though so maybe that's why.

Good to see DBZ did so well in the opening weekends too, only a tad off from getting in the top 10.

I always wondered why Friday isn't as high-grossing as it is in the US. What's so different about a Japanese Friday that it becomes one of the lowest grossing days of the week?

Presumably they still work and go to school on that day, JUST like Americans also do. Or do they all work and study until midnight? lol

Why is Friday in America such a big box office day but not in Japan?

Saw the Wednesday estimate for DBZ and it's only ¥56 million and far behind Conan and Fast 7. Should I be getting concerned?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (7th All-Time Weekend)
Wednesday is Ladies' Day, meaning all major theater chains offer tickets at 40% off for all females. And since females make up near 2/3 of Japan's yearly box-office admissions, that's why it's generally stronger than the other weekdays.

However, there are some films that have little female appeal, and I'd imagine DBZ is one of them. So, it makes sense for it to have a rather ordinary Wednesday.

Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F does appeal frontloaded, but that's to be expected. And since there are freebies going out to the first 1.5 million attendees, that's going to make it even more frontloaded. It'll probably drop close to 50% this weekend.

No demographic breakdown was given for either film, but Detective Conan has female appeal/fans, which explains its strong Wednesday.

Cinderella and Parasyte (Part 2) debut this weekend, one week ahead of Golden Week, and I'll have Saturday's seating/showtime numbers posted soon.

Usual Locations (~43% of Market) - Saturday (04/25) - Seating/Showtimes

13. 16,318 [116/117], Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 8
14. 15,207 [110/112], Strobe Edge (Toho) Week 7

24. 3,038 [21/21], Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) Week 6
25. 1,823 [7/11], Magic in the Moonlight (Long Ride) Week 3

There are 8 or 9 theaters missing from the listing above, so this week's seating/showtimes is probably closer to representing just under 40% of the overall market rather than the usual ~43%.

Cinderella is the widest release so far this year, and it should have one of the best opening weekends and final totals of 2015, too. Let's see if its opening weekend can reach the heights of last weekend's Dragon Ball Z and Detective Conan.

And this weekend has a very good chance of breaking into the Top 10 Biggest Weekends of All-Time, too, just like last weekend! If we have two back-to-back, non-July/August, weekends make the Top 10, that'd be an accomplishment unlikely to ever be repeated again.

Also of note, Into the Woods (Week 7) and Night at the Museum (Week 6) fell out of the Top 25 following huge cuts, so both films aren't going to receive the upcoming Golden Week boost to their late legs.

I suppose I'll hope for DBZ to make ¥480 million then. Battle of Gods only fell 38% and made ¥424 million, it'd be disappointing if it didn't make a good chunk more especially with how it lost ground to it over the weekdays.

Looks like BoG might be in front of it by it's second weekend.

Some actuals were posted

DBZ - ¥1.357 billion
Conan - ¥1.214 billion
Fast 7 - ¥1.083 billion

Estimates were pretty accurate for Fast 7 and Conan but DBZ went up ¥90 million.

DBZ also had more admissions over the last 5 days as the total admissions have grown by 7k over Conan.

I'm not home right now, so no weekend forecast this week. However, it looks like Cinderella won't be a major breakout like it could have been. It still looks good to debut safely on top with early admissions looking comparable to Maleficent.

And legs will be very good with Golden Week coming up.

Without asking for a complete forecast, what kind of opening would you predict just for Cinderella and what kind of drops in % just for DBZ and Conan ?

I'm thinking:

600-700 million / Cinderella [new]
525-550 million / Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno [week 2]
500-525 million / Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F [week 2]

Forgive any grammatical errors (not on a pc).

Disney films play very well on Sundays, though, so Cinderella has favorable potential.

Wow, that would be quite a hold for Conan and a pretty good one for DBZ too. And despite Cinderella opening lower it will probably outgross them both in the end anyway.

*Note for further estimates (thanks to 1st week-end data) :
DBZ 43% chains multiplier : 2.469
Conan 43% chains multiplier : 2.393
DBZ average ticket price : 1342.11 yen
Conan average ticket price : 1270.306 yen

I hope DBZ doesn't fall over 50% this weekend, if it could make ¥500 I'd be happy enough with that.

The percentage that it's down compared to last Saturday seems to be decreasing as the day goes on.
