Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
I wonder if Conan's sunday will beat DBZ's saturday ? Its 10 am admissions were just slightly ahead of DBZ's at the same time yesterday.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
It's possible, it wasn't that far behind yesterday and if it does better today it could do.
How much in front in does Conan need to be in order to be #1 because it doesn't have 3D or Imax to give it a boost.

I don't really know. And it will depend on the other chains too.
Although on japanese websites the winner will be the movie which is ahead in admissions since that's how they proceed for the rankings (some other countries like France do the same).

I would guess so. Although numbers will be vastly smaller regardless (except during the holidays).

Are there any other notable movies coming out in Japan over the next couple weeks?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
I said BoG on Sunday did 93% what it did on Saturday and so far RoF's ticket sales are 93% of what it was at yesterday.
If it stays that way it would have 143k by the end of today but I'll be safe and hope it can reach 130k.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
The Conan movie is up by around 25-30% for now which would put it at around 180,000 by the end of the day but I doubt that's going to happen. A 10% increase and finishing with 155,000 is probably more likely.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
Looks like a huge batch of showtimes just ended for DBZ. They should add how many of the showtimes planned for the day have ended in their data.
Hourly updates seem to favour Conan because the movie is close to 2h (113 minutes) while mid-hour updates seem to favour DBZ because the movie is a little over 1h30 (93 minutes). Hourly updates are probably the ones which represent an approximately equal percentage of showtimes for both movies.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
You guys are on this! I was hanging out with some friends, but I'm here now. Detective Conan is going to win Sunday by a comparable margin that Dragon Ball Z won Saturday, so this is one close battle. Updates after 8PM will be much smaller than they were yesterday, though, since theaters end showtimes earlier than on Saturdays, so keep this in mind.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
Probably not, but I wouldn't rule it out. Let's just hope they hit ¥800 million, since that's a number usually reserved for major blockbusters.
As I mentioned, Sunday showtimes end much earlier than Saturday, so admission updates will become much weaker into the night compared to yesterday.

When should we expect to hear a weekend estimate and then weekend actual?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
I'll post some weekend estimates tomorrow morning (and charts to go along with them, considering their huge openings), and weekend actuals are released Monday morning (Monday evening in Japan).

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
And if one or both open over ¥800 million , it's going to be some of the most impressive debuts in some time (especially occurring over the same weekend).
Usually, ¥600/700 million is the maximum for these films, so anything over ¥800 million is approaching major blockbuster territory. And as far as animated films go, only Hayao Miyazaki films, the last two One Piece films, and three Pixar films have opened above ¥800 million, too.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Battle (DBZ vs Detective Conan
Yeah. It will have been stable all day but will start to decrease compared to saturday when the last showtimes kick-in. Same thing for Conan who's increase compared to saturday will probably be decreasing.
Not sure yet but imo it's certainly looking like DBZ will win the weekend in gross while Conan will win the weekend in admissions.
