Weekend Ranking (03/14-15)

ImageImageImage

01 (01) Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 2
02 (--) Into the Woods (Disney) DEBUT
03 (--) Strobe Edge (Toho) DEBUT
04 (--) The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) DEBUT
05 (--) Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei) DEBUT

06 (02) American Sniper (Warner Bros.) Week 4
07 (03) Solomon's Perjury (Part 1) (Shochiku) Week 2
08 (--) The Imitation Game (Gaga) DEBUT
09 (05) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 13
10 (04) Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho) Week 5

A great weekend to kick off the Spring box-office season.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes repeats atop the box-office, and delivered the biggest second weekend (and two-week total) in the franchise in the process.

The 36th installment in the series grossed ¥474,683,950 ($3.9 million) with 418,700 admissions over the weekend, down just 26% from last weekend, bringing its two-week total to ¥1.24 billion ($10.4 million) and 1.07 million admissions. Its biggest week is still ahead, Spring Break, and at this rate, it'll definitely reach ¥3.5 billion and could become the first Doraemon film to hit ¥4 billion $35 million), if you exclude Stand By Me, Doraemon from the annual March releases.<

>Into the Woods debuted in second place, taking in a strong ¥426,038,800 ($3.6 million) with 328,722 admissions across 342 screens. Disney and reporters are claiming it's the best debut for a musical film since 2000, but it's less than Mamma Mia! in gross (yen and dollar) and admissions, so I'm not sure the criteria they're using for their claim.

Either way, great opening, but there are already signs that it might have weak WOM (Sunday % drop and questionable Monday results). However, with Spring Break, and the fact that most musicals manage at least solid legs, it'll earn at least ¥2.5 billion ($20 million), if not ¥3 billion ($25 million).<

>Strobe Edge came in third place with the best debut for a Shoujo film (teen romance) since 2008 (or since 2010 if you include would Josei romance titles, too). The film grossed ¥332,437,800 ($2.8 million) with 286,450 admissions on 294 screens over the weekend.

This is a perfect film to release before Spring Break, as its target audience will have a more opportune time to catch it in cinemas over the break. Toho is expecting it to reach ¥3 billion ($25 million), which isn't impossible, but a more reasonable target is ¥2.5 billion ($20 million).<

>The Lion Who Stands in the Wind comes in fourth place, grossing ¥132,691,300 ($1.1 million) with 111,217 admissions across 309 screens. A pretty standard, if not mediocre, debut but legs should be pretty strong. It still has a shot of reaching the 1 billion milestone.<

>Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival rounds out the Top 5, but came in 32% behind last March's release. Playing on 213 screens, the 10th film in the series grossed ¥130,363,100 ($1.1 million) with 112,883 admissions. I've noticed TV ratings for the series have dropped over the past year or two, so perhaps that's part of the reason the film series has been dropping as well. It'll be another year without a Pretty Cure film earning ¥1 billion.<

>The Imitation Game is the weekend's last opener to make the Top 10, but it does so quite impressively. Playing in limited release across 61 screens, it earned ¥53,900,800 ($ ) with 42,572 admissions. It's very rare for films to expand in Japan's market, so I wouldn't bet on it happening this upcoming weekend, but reviews are strong and WOM likely as well, so maybe it can earn up to ¥400 million ($3-3.5 million) or so in total.<

>And finally, Big Hero 6 will enjoy its last weekend in the Top 10, but has achieved an impressive 13-consecutive weeks there, and has grossed ¥9,041,560,000 ($76.8 million) with 7,113,086 admissions after thirteen weeks in release.<

Corpse, would you recommend any modern Japanese films to me? The Japanese films I have watched and liked were mainly Kitano's; Sonatine, Battle Royale, and Boiling Point, but I also like the American remakes of Ringu and Ju-on.

I think you'd enjoy, most of, Takashi Miike's work. His filmography is pretty big, often directing 2 or 3 films every year, so you may have a lot of researching ahead since he is a very diverse director, too. Maybe give 13 Assassins a try? It's one of his more recent, critically-acclaimed films you'd probably enjoy.

Perhaps Outrage and its sequel, Beyond Outrage, would be up your ally. The films following the Galileo drama (mystery/thriller) may interest you, they're (in order): Suspect X > Amalfi: Rewards of the Goddess > Andalusia: Revenge of the Goddess > Midsummer's Equation.

If you like films about cops and/or detectives, I can give you a huge list. These shows and films have been huge in Japan for decades, and are generally very good despite there being so many. There are also a ton of good films about WWII, if that's your thing.

If you like films with a sci-fi theme, you might like the 20th Century Boys trilogy.

Many Japanese films often require some sort of prior knowledge of the material, though, so keep that in mind. An overwhelming majority of Japanese films are based on some source material (manga, tv shows, novels, anime, etc.). Average Joe moviegoers are few and far between, so most films are targeting a specific audience/fanbase.

In terms of scale and special effects, this film is probably the biggest production that Japan has undertaken, especially being a two-part film.

Overall, there isn't too much footage to really go by, but it looks pretty impressive at this stage.

Attack on Titan has sold nearly 50 million books (manga) in Japan since debuting in April 2012.

It looks awesome, and miles better than the blockbuster trash that the US puts out.

Upcoming Weekend Releases [Theater Counts]

ImageImageImage

WIDE:
03/21, [345] - Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb (Fox)
03/21, [312] - Assassination Classroom (Toho)
03/21, [309] - Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei)

There are several limited openers, but none of them are playing at 10 or more locations this weekend.

Seating and Showtime data will be posted soon. Most theaters have given Assassination Classroom the biggest screens, thus it has a big advantage this weekend with so many seats available. It's also one of the more popular current manga/anime series, so maybe it has some breakout potential (online signs are also very good). We'll see.

This weekend will be interesting. It's the weekend before Spring Break officially begins, and today is the Spring Equinox (national holiday). It hasn't fallen on a weekend since 2010 (and 2004 before then), and drops then were slightly better than an average weekend last time this occurred. The Spring Equinox spikes business when it falls on a weekday, but it appears to have minimal effect when it lands on a weekend.

>Assassination Classroom has potential for a big opening... if it doesn't collapse on Sunday. Advance ticket sales were very solid, and morning/afternoon ticket sales are and will be very good since it has stage greetings taking place at several locations throughout the day (many locations are more or less booked until the evening showings begin). I kind of want to predict a little higher, but it's likely to experience a hefty drop on Sunday.

The live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime, where a delinquent class is tasked with assassinating a powerful creature (also their teacher) that has already destroyed most of the Moon, in one-years time, or else he'll destroy Earth, should pull off the weekend victory and unseat Doraemon this weekend (though they could swap positions next weekend).<

>Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb earned ~¥60-70 million ($500-600,000) on Friday, suggesting an opening saftely above ¥200 million over the weekend frame, but it may not crack the Top 3. The top half of the box-office is quite strong right now.<

>The Kamen Rider franchise seems to have stabilized after multiple consecutive dips, with debuts around ¥200 million, so this one shouldn't be any different.<

Last Saturday was discount day at Toho Cinemas, so the Saturday drops are higher than they'll be on a national level. Saturday holds will be ~5% or so stronger those above (maybe closer to 10% stronger for last weekend's openers, having received the biggest benefit from it).

>Very strong for Assassination Classroom. Even if it plummets 50% tomorrow, since it had multiple stage greetings to boost its opening day, it should claim the #1 spot with near ¥400 million. Sunday's advance ticket sales don't look too bad right now, though.<

>Doraemon can't be ruled out of repeating atop the box-office for a 3rd-consecutive week, however, especially in admissions. It'll win Sunday again, which will bring its weekend admissions very close to Assassination Classroom's (assuming a near 50% drop on Sunday). In gross, it looks headed for around ¥350 million right now.<

>Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb performed fairly well, and if it increases enough on Sunday, it has a chance of reaching ¥300 million over the weekend. If that happens, it should finish close to its predecessor, and might have a slim chance of even beating it.

>Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 is doing as expected, but it'll need a healthy Sunday to reach ¥200 million again for the franchise.

So much for Doraemon winning Sunday and possibly making a weekend comeback. It's doing just fine as expected, much better than Saturday, but Assassination Classroom is surprisingly keeping pace with it heading into the afternoon and will pull well ahead once the evening showings begin.

Most films with stage greetings occurring on opening day plummet the following day, but that isn't the case with Assassination Classroom right now.

Assassination Classroom will likely earn the best debut for a live-action film so far this year, and since last September (Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends).

25 (--) 946, (-31%), [14/37], Annabel (Warner Bros.) Week 4

Note: Weekend holds will still be slightly better (a couple % points) than those above on the national level.

>Assassination Classroom "only" dropped 26% on Sunday, so it handily wins the weekend. Normally, a Sunday drop of 26% is really bad (unless a discount day or holiday is involved), but this film had many stage greetings on Saturday. And films with stage greetings typically fall near 50%, if not more, the next day so a 26% drop is very, very impressive. It might be a sign that its audience isn't just limited to its core manga/anime base.

Estimates have it at 355,000 admissions, which is more than enough for a debut above ¥400 million, if not as much as ¥450 million or more. It's likely to have the best debut for a live-action film, domestic or imported, since last September if actuals aren't much lower.

>Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb looks to have earned itself a nice debut as well. Estimates have it 235,000 admissions, which depending on how young it skewed, could be enough for an opening of ¥300 million. It should be down maybe 15% or so from its predecessor, and might manage to pass its total with the Spring Break boost.

>Kamen Rider only sold about 87% of the tickets that the December release did, so its chances of earning the franchise another ¥200 million opening are incredibly low. It might have even debuted closer to ¥150 million.

Weekend Estimates will be posted shortly.

03 (--) ¥295 million ($2.5 million), 0, ¥360 million ($3.0 million), Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb (Fox) NEW
04 (02) ¥243 million ($2.0 million), -43%, ¥1.00 billion ($8.4 million), Into the Woods (Disney) Week 2
05 (03) ¥201 million ($1.7 million), -39%, ¥900 million ($7.5 million), Strobe Edge (Toho) Week 2
06 (--) ¥170 million ($1.4 million), 0, ¥170 million ($1.4 million), Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) NEW
07 (04) ¥87 million ($725,000), -34%, ¥350 million ($3.0 million), The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) Week 2
08 (05) ¥78 million ($650,000), -40%, ¥250 million ($2.1 million), Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei) Week 2

11 (08) ¥34 million ($280,000), -37%, ¥165 million ($1.4 million), The Imitation Game (Gaga) Week 2
(There are a few films targeting the #12 spot with ~¥20 million).

>Assassination Classroom broke out a bit in its debut, and if estimates hold, earning the best debut for a live-action film in 6 months. This debut should net it at least ¥2.5 billion ($20 million), if not closer to ¥3 billion ($25 million). It runs in Weekly Shonen Jump (targeting young males), but there's been discussions about it reaching beyond its intended audience the past year or so, and the film's performance may be another indication of this.

>Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb actually did pretty well. The weekend estimate is only 15% behind its predecessor, and with a more favorable release date than last time, it might be able to reach ¥2 billion ($16/17 million) again.

Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3, the 50th theatrical release in the Kamen Rider series, is off to one of the weakest starts in the franchise, but Toei decided to release the Spring release in March versus April this year, so maybe Spring Break can allow it to become yet another ¥1 billion grosser in the franchise.... but with this weekend estimate, it'll be a big challenge.

It's pretty good in Yen and admissions after 5 weeks, and Spring Break just started, but the current exchange rate isn't going to make any USD totals this year appear good compared to the last 7/8 years.

Using the estimate after 5 weeks in release, and comparing its performance at the same point in time in recent years, it would have earned:

2014 - $19.1 million (+17%)
2013 - $20.5 million (+25%)
2012 - $23.7 million (+45%)
2011 - $24.0 million (+46%)
2010 - $21.7 million (+32%)

It's also the biggest imported live-action film (in Yen and admissions) since Transformers: Age of Extinction last August, until Into the Woods catches it.

Ah, ok, so it's actually not doing badly. Over $20m, in my eyes, looks good. So it's an exchange rate issue. Cool.

Weekend Ranking (03/21-22)

01 (--) Assassination Classroom (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 3
03 (02) Into the Woods (Disney) Week 2
04 (--) Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb (Fox) DEBUT
05 (03) Strobe Edge (Toho) Week 2
06 (--) Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) DEBUT
07 (04) The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) Week 2
08 (05) Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei) Week 2
09 (06) American Sniper (Warner Bros.) Week 5
10 (07) Solomon's Perjury (Part 1) (Shochiku) Week 3

>Assassination Classroom ends Doraemon's reign atop the box-office, and sold more tickets over the weekend than any live-action film since last September (although it misses Into the Wood's opening weekend in gross).

The live-action adaptation of the popular Shonen manga/anime, starring Ryosuke Yamada (Hey! Say! JUMP), Masaki Suda (Kamen Rider, Princess Jellyfish) and Maika Yamamoto (Kamen Teacher, Faint Her) grossed ¥410,788,100 ($3.4 million) with 350,900 admissions across 313 screens over the weekend.

This is an impressive debut, one of the best for a non-sequel Shonen film (it just beat Death Note's opening weekend for example) and with Spring Break, it might have a chance of reaching the ¥3 billion ($25 million) milestone.

>Doraemon exceeded ¥1.7 billion ($14.5 million) after three weeks in release, while Into the Woods exceeded ¥1.1 billion ($9.0 million) after two weeks in release.

>Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb came in notably below estimates, making what was a good opening weekend turn into just an alright one.

The third, and likely final, film in the franchise earned ¥260,770,900 ($2.2 million) with 202,685 admissions on 663 screens over the weekend. It's not bad, but it is down 26% compared to its predecessor. Its legs will probably be stronger than last time, though, so exceeding ¥1.5 billion ($13/14 million) shouldn't be too difficult, which is acceptable.

>Strobe Edge has reached ¥940 million ($7.8 million) with 800,000 admissions after two-weeks in release, proving it's going to earn more over its weekdays versus its weekends. It also came in 2nd place on Monday (behind Assassination Classroom), and will probably have the second biggest week over Spring Break this year.

>Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 actually came in above estimates, taking in ¥186,768,250 ($1.6 million) with 145,688 admissions on 307 screens, but it's still pretty disappointing.

This is only the second film in the series since 2007 (and there's been over 20 films since then) that has opened below ¥200 million, and it'll likely miss the ¥1 billion mark, too, to become the only the third film since 2007 (when Toei began releasing 3 films each year) to miss the milestone.
