01 (--) Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) American Sniper (Warner Bros.) Week 3
03 (--) Solomon's Perjury (Part 1) (Shochiku) DEBUT
04 (03) Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho) Week 4
05 (02) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 12
06 (05) Have a Song on Your Lips (Asmik Ace) Week 2
07 (07) Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I (Shochiku) Week 2
08 (06) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) Week 5
09 (--) PriPara the Movie: Everyone, Assemble! Prism Tours (Avex Pictures) DEBUT
10 (04) The Curtain Rises (T-Joy) Week 2

>Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes kicked off the upcoming Spring box-office in a big way once again this year (if down a bit from estimates). The 36th installment in the most-successful movie franchise of all-time in Japan brought in ¥644,735,500 ($5.4 million) with 557,310 admissions across 365 screens over the weekend.

The opening weekend is 7.3% higher than last year's film, and as a result, it achieved the third biggest opening weekend in the franchise in gross (behind the special CG Stand By Me, Doraemon from last year, and the 2013 release) and second biggest opening in the franchise in admissions (behind just the 2013 release).

Doraemon will be targeting a total of ¥3.5-4 billion ($30-35 million) with 3-3.5 million admissions (very likely enough for a Top 10 yearly spot).

The blue robot-cat from the future remains as popular as ever, if not more so, and this opening weekend is a high benchmark for the rest of 2015's releases to reach with most box-office years having fewer than 10 films open with 500,000+ admissions.<

>American Sniper continues its impressive run in Japan, taking in ¥180,999,400 ($1.5 million) with 141,185 admissions in its third weekend. After three-weeks, the Clint Eastwood feature has earned ¥1,458,786,900 ($12.4 million) with 1,140,757 admissions.

Sniper is still on target to hit ¥2 billion ($17/18 million, and could finish as high as ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) with the Spring Break boost coming up in a couple weeks.<

>Solomon's Perjury (Part 1) settles for third place, and probably didn't do as well as Shochiku had hoped. Playing on 311 screens, the film grossed ¥120,128,100 ($1.0 million) with 91,850 admissions over the weekend. Shochiku has had amazing consistency with most of their films opening around this level, which isn't bad, but it's generally just enough for most films to finish with enough to break even (most films that fail to earn ¥1 billion at the box-office are considered commercial failures).<

>Big Hero 6 drops three spots to rank fifth in its twelfth week in release, largely due to a pretty severe cut in theaters (-20%) and screens/showtimes (~-30%). A twelfth weekend in the Top 5 is hardly anything to be disappointing about, however.

Disney's blockbuster animated hit earned ¥63,803,900 ($540,000) with 48,113 admissions in its twelfth weekend, down a hefty 59% from the previous week. After twelve weeks in release, the film achieved "uber-blockbuster" status, with a total reaching ¥8,960,705,900 ($76.2 million) with 7,051,092 admissions.

It is now the 44th biggest film of all-time, and the 11th biggest animated film of all-time (overtaking Monsters University in gross and admissions over the weekend on both lists).<

>PriPara the Movie: Everyone, Assemble! Prism Tours cracked the Top 10 on just 40 screens which is always impressive, however this limited animated feature falls pretty short of Avex's past limited animated hits over the past couple years. Season 2 of the anime means we'll probably see another film at some point.<

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Film Franchises
Finally got the Biggest Film Franchises updated again; it's been a year. Many of the biggest franchises in Japan have releases this upcoming year, with a few of them receiving new entries after many years.

I also, finally, got around to including the Kamen Rider Series after putting it off for years (there are so many films in that series, and it's over 40 years old now...), and while figures are easy enough to acquire back to 1998, that still leaves 18 films (37%) from 1971-1994 without real figures, so I used estimates (40% of the require distributor income Eiren used to include films on their charts since 1980).

And thankfully, that's only a little more than 1/3 of the overall films, and since none of them are ranked on Eiren's charts back to 1980, it's safe to assume most of them didn't earn very much. I'm pretty confident that the 31 films (63%) from 2000 until now represent up to 80% or more of the franchise's total gross and admissions, having earned ¥32.4 billion alone.

I guess the GODZILLA franchise does not include the two U.S. movies?

I included the 2014 release, but not the 1998 one. I know it's called "Godzilla", but Toho themselves renamed the film "Zilla" in Japan and the kaiju featured in the film isn't considered "Godzilla" (Godzilla fights and kills it in 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars).

Toho was part of the production of the 2014 Godzilla, and they handled the distribution in Japan, so including it makes sense to me.

It's an usual situation, thoughts?

Godzilla is Japanese. Only films that they make or are associated with them in any way should be considered. The 1998 movie isn't Godzilla in the slightest. It is just a dinosaur thing. So I think it shouldn't be added. But for sure it will look strange to Westerners as their only exposure to the character is from two US-made films, and if one of them is not included, it stands out. But who knows, it might make people see that the world does not revolve around the Yank. But I doubt it.

Well, all the Japanese Godzilla movies can be lumped together as sequels or reboots, while both U.S. versions are a different kind of animal...

I agree with both of you. Toho's Godzilla franchise is one all it's own, and I've never seen any American production mentioned when discussing its numbers in the past. That franchise will be rebooted next year, too.

So, here is again, excluding the Godzilla American production films.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Releases [Theater Counts]
Spring Break is almost here, so the first major wave of Spring films are being released this weekend (with the second, slightly smaller wave next weekend).

Upcoming Weekend Releases [Theater Counts]

ImageImageImageImage

WIDE:
03/13, [113] - Shimajiro and the Big Tree (Toho Video Division) [JAPAN]
03/14, [342] - Into the Woods (Disney) [USA]
03/14, [309] - The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) [JAPAN]
03/14, [294] - Strobe Edge (Toho) [JAPAN]
03/14, [215] - Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei) [JAPAN]

ImageImageImageImage

LIMITED [10-99 theaters]:
03/13, [61] - The Imitation Game (Gaga) [USA/UK]
03/13, [59] - The Theory of Everything (Toho-Towa) [UK]
03/13, [22] - Song One (Phantom Film) [USA]
03/14, [48] - Ultraman Ginga S the Movie: Showdown! The 10 Ultra-Warriors! (Shochiku Media Division) [JAPAN]
03/14, [31] - Beyond the Boundary: I'll Be Here (Shochiku) [JAPAN]
03/14, [12] - Aftershock (Shochiku Media Division) [CHINA]

Big weekend ahead, but can Into the Woods manage to bump Doraemon out of 1st place? Strobe Edge might have potential near the top, and most everything else should post decent numbers, too.

Early Opener Projections:
¥350-400 million - Into the Woods (Disney)
¥250-300 million - Strobe Edge (Toho)
¥150-200 million - The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho)
¥125-175 million - Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei)
¥100-125 million - The Imitation Game (Gaga)
¥75-100 million - The Theory of Everything (Toho-Towa)
¥50-75 million - Shimajiro and the Big Tree (Toho Video Division)
¥50 million - Beyond the Boundary: I'll Be Here (Shochiku)

All of these could debut in the Top 10, meaning this weekend could see up to 8 new releases make the Top 10. At any rate, 6 new releases in the Top 10 seems assured.

Speaking of franchises, now that we will see RINGS this fall, how did the Japanese and the U.S. versions do?

Both versions did well (worse as they went on), especially for the Horror genre.

Japan is, I still believe, known for horror franchises like Ringu and such, but horror is largely a dead genre in Japan. A horror film (domestic or imported) is often lucky to receive a wide-release, and even make the Top 100 grossing films list each year.

Ring Franchise Box-Office History
Image

Japanese Productions:
¥1.65 billion ($12.9 million) - Ring (1998)
¥3.36 billion ($28.8 million) - Ring 2 (1999)
¥1.60 billion ($14.9 million) - Ring 0: Birthday (2000)
¥1.35 billion ($17.3 million) - Sadako 3D (2012)
¥720 million ($7.3 million) - Sadako 3D 2 (2013)

American Productions:
¥1.75 billion ($14.3 million) - The Ring (2002)
¥300 million ($2.6 million) - The Ring Two (2005)

There was a TV movie called Ring: Kanzenban that was released in 1995, which was technically the first overall film in this franchise.

Thanks! Compared to the cultural impact the grosses seem rather smallish, especially compared to U.S. numbers...

The first Ring film became the highest-grossing horror film in Japan (a big achievement, but like I said, the horror genre is the opposite of a booming genre ), which I guess caused a ripple effect in other Asian markets before the news of this popular horror film series from Japan finally reached the West where it kinda became this cult hit in the States.

I think its cultural impact is a little overstated, and certainly short-lived.

The series was successful enough to spawn similar style films like Ju-on (The Grudge) in Japan and around the world, which was the Ring's biggest contribution of its cultural impact (in my opinion), but none these comparable films matched the success of the Ring.

The Weekend Forecast will be up this evening, and it should be the biggest weekend so far this year. March is usually the 4th or 5th strongest month of the year (behind July, August, December, and sometimes April).

Good for Into the Woods, but I don't think it's an early indication of opening atop the box-office, though. Doraemon isn't a big advance ticket seller and its walk-up business will probably outpace Into the Woods, and it'll be much stronger on Sunday, too.

Doraemon is likely to repeat at #1.

Strobe Edge is looking solid. It's a film that is expected to sell plenty of advance tickets, so it probably isn't going to challenge Doraemon or Into the Woods for #1 unless it turns out to be a strong date night movie for teenagers.

Nice for The Imitation Game. It doesn't look like it'll have any problem selling through 50% (or more) of its tickets for the day.

Pretty poor for The Lion Who Stands in the Wind. Less than 5,000 advance tickets is on par with Solomon's Perjury (Part 1)'s advance ticket sales last Saturday, and it only went on to open to just ¥120.1 million ($1.0 million) and 91,850 admissions over the weekend. However, it should be a more unlikely advance ticket seller, so walk-up business should have it opening higher than that, but it's clearly aiming at a standard opening weekend.

I'll post the Weekend Forecast soon.

Doraemon has quite the lead, and is holding very well. Its lead, however, will begin to shrink as the day progresses as this franchise plays predominantly before 5PM. But it has such a strong lead right now, that it'll be hard for anything to catch it (though Strobe Edge and Into the Woods will come close). And even if they match it today, though, they won't be able to keep pace with Doraemon on Sunday. It has #1 practically locked up it seems.

The race for 2nd place, and top debut of the weekend, between Strobe Edge and Into the Woods has been dead even almost since the day began. They've rarely been separated by more than 1,000/,2000 admissions or so. It'll be interesting to see how the two compare with one another during the evening/night.

Into the Woods played VERY well during the evening/night. There are no signs that its playing primarily to a family audience, as its opening day business suggests it may be attracting several different demographics for now. Also, it managed to beat Doraemon by enough on Saturday that the race for #1 is back on. Both films should be on course for around ¥400 million ($3.5 million) over the weekend. Let's see what happens today.

Strobe Edge wasn't able to keep pace with Into the Woods once the evening showings started, but it still continued to play well. Toho is reporting it outpaced December's Ao Haru Ride by 59%, so an opening near ¥300 million ($2.5 million) or slightly above the mark looks pretty safe. It's been some time since a youth romance film has opened above ¥300 million (I believe We Were There: Part 1 was the last film, which opened this exact weekend in 2012), so hopefully it can exceed the mark.

The Imitation Game (in limited release), sold through 51% of its available tickets yesterday. Quite impressive.

Saturday was also a Toho Cinemas Day (tickets 40% off at their locations), so expect some bigger drops for the weekend than you see above for most films.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (Spring Releases, Wav
Digital beginning to gain traction in world’s second-largest home video market after the U.S.

Quote:
Packaged-media sales and rentals accounted for 84% of more than $4.0 billion (¥477 billion) in consumer spending on home entertainment in Japan in 2014, according to new data from Futuresource Consulting.

Digital video, which includes transactional VOD, electronic sell-through and subscription streaming, has struggled to take hold in Japan, but generated 31% growth in 2014 to reach $670 million (¥81 billion). After the United States, Japan is the No. 2 home video market, followed by the United Kingdom.

Indeed, disc rentals accounted for more than $1.9 billion (¥238.5 billion), or 50% of consumer spending in 2014. Despite small declines, the sector is expected to remain significant, reaching $2.2 billion (¥259 billion) and representing 44% of spending by 2018.

While DVD is declining, Blu-ray Disc offset the decline last year by strong sales of anime, music titles, and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Frozen. Japan has the second-largest Blu-ray market in the world after the U.S., and Blu-ray accounted for 45% ($585 million) of $1.3 billion sell-through spending in 2014.

While disc continues to account for the lion's share of home entertainment revenue, broadband penetration, strong uptake of connected devices and a willingness to pay for premium entertainment are galvanizing consumer interest in digital services, according to Joanna Wright, senior market analyst with Futuresource.

Japan ended 2014 with a smartphone install base of 82 million units, or 65% market penetration.

“Mobile operators play a significant role in the online video market with many launching their own subscription video services and prompting the SVOD-via-mobile market to skyrocket from one million users in 2011 to nearly nine million in 2014,” Wright wrote in a Feb. 2 note.

Futuresource said overall home video spending, including pay-TV, should remain relatively stable going forward, totaling $11 billion (¥1.3 trillion) by 2018.

Doraemon was too strong on Sunday (32% increase) for Into the Woods to dethrone it for the weekend (at least in admissions). I would say Into the Woods could still come out on top in gross, though, since it'll have a higher avg. ticket price, but Doraemon and other family/children films play very well at Aeon Cinemas (not included here), the largest chain (~25% of the market), that the difference in admissions will probably be too great. But there could still be a small chance of it happening.

Still though, even if Into the Woods comes in at #2, it looks to have delivered the second highest-debut for a musical ever, just narrowly behind Mamma Mia!. And it's close enough according to estimates that it may have edged out Mamma Mia!, too, if actuals see a slight uptick.

Strobe Edge did very well and will come in above ¥300 million based on these numbers, earning it the biggest opening weekend for a teen romance film since 2012. And with Spring Break coming up, it could become one of the biggest teen romance films in several years as well.

And everything else did quite well, too. There's really no bad performance from anything this weekend (the holdovers dropping 50/60% is just due to theater/showtime cuts).

I'll post the Weekend Estimates soon.

The battle for #1 is... close. Doraemon will come out on top in admissions, with estimates having them at 406,000 versus Into the Wood's 358,000. So the question becomes what Into the Wood's avg. ticket price will turn out being. It'll be a little lower than some past musicals or comparable films since Saturday was a discount day at Toho Cinemas, but it's close enough to have taken the #1 spot.

>Into the Woods is on the cusp of having the best debut for a musical ever. Mamma Mia! holds the record with ¥439 million, which is right in Into the Wood's estimated range. It's doubtful it beats Mamma Mia's opening weekend in admissions (387,000), though.

I'm not too sure what to expect for a total. The 25% dip on Sunday was pretty harsh and reviews online look mixed, but it still has the Disney brand and Spring Break coming up. It should be able to reach ¥3 billion ($25 million), though.<

>Strobe Edge looks to have opened very, very well, delivering the best debut for a teen romance film in years. I mentioned that the last teen romance film to open above ¥300 million was 2012's We Were There (Part 1), but it was actually We Were There (Part 2) (¥314.9 million), also from 2012.

Estimates have Strobe Edge safely above that, though, so Strobe Edge should be aiming for a ¥2.5-3.0 billion total ($20-25 million). I'm pretty sure no teen romance film has exceeded ¥3 billion since maybe 2009 or thereabouts, so that'd be quite the achievement if legs are kind.<

>Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival is only estimated to have earned about 70% of last March's release, but it is above the Pretty Cure film from last October, so it successfully ends the downward spiral the franchise was experiencing. The March release is always bigger than the October release, though, so the overall franchise isn't faring too well.<

>The Lion Who Stands in the Wind is probably the biggest loser this weekend, but it still did okay, I guess. It's just a standard opening for this type of film, and legs are likely to be strong. The debut looks worse when you consider its theater count/showtimes.
