although i wonder how much the piracy have harmed it on china,since piracy on china is pretty common for anime (due to bans). since the BD's would have released by then as well.

Yeah, the release date is still uncertain. Back in November 2020, the first leak of full movie had Chinese subtitle, so it was possibly recorded in a theater from Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macau. Hence, I highly doubt the movie can perform well in China theaters even it passes the censorship.

Actually the highest grossing anime is Mary and The Witch's Flower. 84 mln RUB or $1.49 mln in Russia. Had very good legs and not so easy to beat. Weathering with You grossed 40.5 mln RUB or $633k and Your Name 37 mln RUB or $635k.

With that opening $1.49m in Russia should be achievable in a week or two. Needs a multiplier of 2 and I don't think it will crash and burn after opening weekend.

Is there any news related to the release in mainland China yet? I hope the changing of the distributor from Bilibili to Sony Pictures will put more weight on the release. $600 million globally may be possible if China green lights. However, in order to speed up the process, Sony Pictures may need to "yield" or offer money under the table to make the movie pass censorship .

350k entries for Demon Slayer for its first week. Only "Adieux les cons" did better with 513k, and DS was back to 1st yesterday so still strong even there's new releases usually coming at wednesday in France.
