Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Estimates (09/27-28)
Weekend Estimates (09/27-28)
01 (01) ¥261 million ($2.4 million), -38%, ¥2.95 billion ($27.1 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 3 02 (02) ¥134 million ($1.2 million), -37%, ¥740 million ($6.8 million), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Fox) Week 2 03 (03) ¥110 million ($1.0 million), -25%, ¥7.41 billion ($72.1 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 8 04 (04) ¥79 million ($0.73 million), -27%, ¥1.99 billion ($18.9 million), Lupin III (Toho) Week 5 05 (05) ¥67 million ($0.61 million), -38%, ¥730 million ($6.7 million), Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) Week 3 06 (--) ¥65 million ($0.60 million), 0, ¥65 million ($0.60 million), Jersey Boys (Warner Bros.) NEW 07 (06) ¥56 million ($0.52 million), -44%, ¥270 million ($2.5 million), Revenge of the Pomegranate Hill Tree (Shochiku) Week 2 08 (07) ¥44 million ($0.40 million), -27%, ¥460 million ($4.3 million), Lady Maiko (Toho) Week 3 09 (--) ¥43 million ($0.39 million), 0, ¥43 million ($0.39 million), Zero the Movie (Kadokawa) NEW 10 (08) ¥32 million ($0.28 million), -26%, ¥5.05 billion ($48.8 million), Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Warner Bros.) Week 9
Slow weekend, but after a very strong August and early/mid September, some weak weekends are to be expected for awhile I think.
>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends is falling off faster than Kyoto Inferno, but its massive opening weekend is keeping its running total on track mostly. I don't think it'll beat Kyoto Inferno, however, it'll still earn over ¥4 billion (up to $40 million+). Most second-half sequels earn less than the first-half, so it's just following the common trend. But after the significant debut, there was potential for it to break said trend.
>Dawn of the Planet of the Apes isn't catching any breaks and continues to trail well behind the Rise of the Planet of the Apes, tracking 45/50% behind it after 2-weeks in release. It's kinda hard to say what happened here since the first film enjoyed a healthy run and appeared well-received, even if it failed to match the success of 2001's Planet of the Apes. The franchise itself just seems to be failing.
>Stand By Me, Doraemon is still in the Top 3 after 8-weeks in release and should be just ¥150 million or so away now from becoming the highest-grossing non-Ghibli/Disney animated movie of all-time. It could still reach ¥8 billion (up to $80 million), too.
>Guardians of the Galaxy has outgrossed both Thor: The Dark World (¥650 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (¥700 million) now after just 3-weeks, but ¥1 billion ($10 million) is still going to be a struggle, though it's still attainable. Overall, solid performance for a superhero film without an established brand (having Marvel attached isn't exactly doing much in Japan with Thor and Captain America seeing small increase over their predecessors).
>Jersey Boys got off to a slow start, especially for a Clint Eastwood film considering his films generally perform very well in Japan. But this isn't exactly your typical Eastwood film, so I wouldn't mark it against him.

My friend is in Japan right now. He went to see Ruroni Kenshin and couldn't understand anything.

Which one?
Both halves of the sequel to the 2012 film are playing right now (as you can see in the Top 10).

Probably the new one. He just said Hiroma Kenshin in his message. No idea what "Hiroma" refers to.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Estimates (09/27-28)
Himura Kenshin is the main character's name.
Rurouni means Wandering Samurai/Swordsman, a play on both ru (wandering) and ronin (a samurai without a lord during the feudal periods).

Yeah, could have been Himura. Forgot what he said now. Needless to say I corrected him.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking; Charts Updating
Weekend Ranking (09/27-28)
01 (01) Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 3 02 (02) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Fox) Week 2 03 (03) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 8 04 (04) Lupin III (Toho) Week 5 05 (05) Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) Week 3 06 (06) Revenge of the Pomegranate Hill Tree (Shochiku) Week 2 07 (--) Jersey Boys (Warner Bros.) DEBUT 08 (07) Lady Maiko (Toho) Week 3 09 (09) Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Warner Bros.) Week 9 10 (--) Zero the Movie (Kadokawa) DEBUT
>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends stays on top without any significant new competition, dropping 34% to take in ¥277,466,900 ($2.5 million) with 209,034 admissions. After 3-weeks in release, it has earned ¥3.05 billion ($28.7 million) with 2.38 million admissions. It'll have little trouble exceeding ¥4 billion (about $40 million), but I doubt it reaches the ¥5 billion mark that its predecessor managed to do this past week.
>Stand By Me, Doraemon remains strong, achieving 8-consecutive weeks in the Top 3 (5 of which were consecutive weeks at #1). After 8-weeks, it's exceeded ¥7.5 billion ($73 million) and 5.68 million admissions. It'll become the Highest-Grossing non-Ghibli/Disney Animated film any day now, most-likely on Wednesday. Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back! has held that record since 1998, so this is an amazing achievement from Doraemon.
>Lupin III exceeded ¥2 billion ($19 million) after 5-weeks in release.
>Jersey Boys was the weekend's top openers, grossing a weak ¥54,002,700 ($500,000) with 42,773 admissions on 143 screens. This is by far one of Clint Eastwood's worst showings, but it's also one that probably was expected to do poorly.
>Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno remains in the Top 10 even with The Legend Ends still atop the box-office. It has exceeded ¥5 billion ($48 million) now, making it only 6th domestic live-action film to reach the mark that hasn't been released by Toho. It joins Antarctica (1983), Heaven and Earth (1990), Yamato (2005), Death Note: The Last Name (2006), and Departures (2008).
>Zero the Movie rounds out the Top 10 with a debut of just ¥27,265,200 ($252,000) with 20,659 admissions on 133 screens. I wasn't following this one, so maybe it wasn't expected to do much, but this is pretty terrible.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking; Charts Updated
Quite a few Hollywood films that were on the schedule for November or December were moved into early 2015 in recent weeks.
I believe Annie was already a 2015 release, but here are the others I noticed that changed:
Son of God (January 10th) Annie (January 24th) Exodus: Gods and Kings (January TBA) Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (January TBA) Big Eyes (January TBA) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Late January/Early February) Into the Woods (March 14th) Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (March TBA)
And The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 was bumped off the release schedule for December 2014, and simply carries a 2015 release date now. Most likely, if it's released (Hunger Games bombed, and Catching Fire did even worse), it'll be post-March.

Not surprised that The Hunger Games' flop in Japan. But glad to hear it.
I imagine Big Eyes is the type of film that they will like.

Tim Burton guarantees it a certain degree of success.

Week 10
Well, October is here. It's one of my favorite months, but October is generally the weakest box-office month of the year in Japan, so be prepared for very uninteresting box-office numbers for awhile.
>Likely the month's biggest film opens this weekend, A Samurai Chronicle, and it looks to dethrone Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends and should exceed ¥200 million ($2 million) unless it skews extremely old. It'll skew old, but if seniors (50, 60+ crowd) make up, say, 40% or more, of its audience, that'll drive the avg. ticket price down significantly. Reviews are also really good for the film, so I expect it'll have strong legs throughout the month and into November.
10th place is pretty open with a number of films having potential to make it, but hopefully Rurouni Kenshin can earn itself a 10th weekend in the Top 10. There is a special edition version of The IDOLM@STER Movie that debuted back in January that's been screening for a couple weeks now that could potentially make the Top 10 this time since it's a really weak weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (October is here again..
Since this weekend (month) is so dull, I'll compile some misc. lists for 2014 (Dec.-) throughout the weekend (month).
Here are some of the Weekly numbers for this year's films:
Most Weeks at #1 16 - Frozen (Disney) 8 - The Eternal Zero (Toho) 5 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) 3 - Maleficent (Disney) 3 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) [So Far...]
Most Weeks in the Top 5 18 - Frozen (Disney) 12 - The Eternal Zero (Toho) 9 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) [So Far...] 7 - Maleficent (Disney) 7 - Gravity (Warner Bros.)
Most Weeks in the Top 10 20 - Frozen (Disney) 13 - The Eternal Zero (Toho) 9 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) [So Far...] 9 - Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Warner Bros.) [So Far...] 9 - Maleficent (Disney) 9 - Memories of Marnie (Toho) 9 - Gravity (Warner Bros.)
Stand By Me, Doraemon could have another week or two in the Top 5, so it's looking at 10/11 Weeks in the Top 5, and likely 12/13 Weeks in the Top 10.
Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno probably won't remain in the Top 10 for a 10th weekend, but hopefully it does.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Estimates (10/04-05)
Weekend Estimates (10/04-05)
01 (01) ¥171 million ($1.6 million), -38%, ¥3.48 billion ($32.7 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 4 02 (--) ¥150 million ($1.4 million), 0, ¥220 million ($2.0 million), A Samurai Chronicle (Toho) NEW 03 (03) ¥93 million ($0.85 million), -20%, ¥7.70 billion ($74.6 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 9 04 (02) ¥89 million ($0.81 million), -37%, ¥1.07 billion ($9.8 million), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Fox) Week 3 05 (04) ¥54 million ($0.49 million), -34%, ¥2.17 billion ($20.5 million), Lupin III (Toho) Week 6 06 (05) ¥47 million ($0.41 million), -34%, ¥875 million ($8.0 million), Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) Week 4 07 (07) ¥36 million ($0.33 million), -34%, ¥150 million ($1.3 million), Jersey Boys (Warner Bros.) Week 2 08 (06) ¥30 million ($0.27 million), -50%, ¥450 million ($4.1 million), Revenge of the Pomegranate Hill Tree (Shochiku) Week 3 09 (08) ¥29 million ($0.26 million), -38%, ¥575 million ($5.4 million), Lady Maiko (Toho) Week 4 10 (09) ¥23 million ($0.20 million), -40%, ¥5.12 billion ($49.1 million), Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Warner Bros.) Week 10
>A Samurai Chronicle started off well on Saturday, but eventually fell behind Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (which looks to have earned itself a 4th-consecutive week on top now) at the usual locations. Legs will be good for Samurai Chronicle, though its opening is mediocre.
>Unless Aeon Cinemas played heavily in Dawn of the Apes' favor, then Stand By Me, Doraemon achieves a 9th-consecutive week in the Top 3.
>And I'm not going to attempt to gather an estimate for it since ticket prices are hard to gather, but the SM Town Live! World Tour concert that took place over the weekend for 120,000 attendees, and aired live over the weekend in theaters simultaneously for those who couldn't attend the concert, looks like it'll make the bottom of the Top 10. Admissions from the theaters may have exceeded 20,000, enough to make the bottom of the Top 10 surely.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking (10/04-05)
Weekend Ranking (10/04-05) 01 (01) Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 4 02 (--) A Samurai Chronicle (Toho) DEBUT 03 (03) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 9 04 (02) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Fox) Week 3 05 (04) Lupin III (Toho) Week 6 06 (05) Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) Week 4 07 (07) Jersey Boys (Warner Bros.) Week 2 08 (06) Revenge of the Pomegranate Hill Tree (Shochiku) Week 3 09 (08) Lady Maiko (Toho) Week 4 10 (09) Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Warner Bros.) Week 10
>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends wins its 4th-consecutive weekend, earning ¥177,435,300 ($1.6 million) on 131,747 admissions. After 4-weeks in release, the final film in the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy has earned more than ¥3.4 billion ($32.7 million) on 2.72 million admissions.
>A Samurai Chronicle settles for second place, but came quite close to the #1 spot. The very well-received film took in ¥153,624,900 ($1.4 million) on 128,647 admissions on 330 screens. The avg. ticket price was low, coming in at just ¥1,194 ($11.1), or about 9% below this year's estimated average. And this is because 50+ year olds made up over 40% of its audience. Since it's been well-received, and is skewing old, it's likely to have excellent legs.
>Stand By Me, Doraemon is still holding on strong, achieving its 9th-straight week in the Top 3. It has exceeded ¥7.7 billion ($75 million) after 9-weeks in release, and became the highest-grossing non-Ghibli/Disney animated film ever (and has beaten a number of Ghibli/Disney films now, too).
>Dawn of the Planet of the Apes slips 2 spots to rank 4th over the weekend. After 3-weeks in release, it has exceeded ¥1 billion ($9.5 million) on 790,000 admissions. At its current pace, it's only going to earn 55-60% of its predecessor's total.
>Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno has been confirmed to have ranked 10th for the weekend, accomplishing a 10th-straight week in the Top 10. This is an incredible feat, and it's very close now to becoming Warner Bros.'s biggest domestic film ever, too. It's less than ¥70 million away now from surpassing 2006's Death Note: The Last Name.
