And this could very well be the final Studio Ghibli Box-Office History update I do before the final one (when Marnie finishes up).
As announced last month, the studio is halting feature film production (Memories of Marnie being their last film) for the foreseeable future to reevaluate where to take the studio from here. And I doubt they'll get back into film production. Hayao Miyazaki's retirement was pretty much the the nail in the coffin for them.
Miyazaki recently said it was "inevitable" that Ghibli would stop making films, too.

Like anything, if you make a loss, you pack up shop. Ghibli's films were very costly and they never made huge profits.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking (Lupin;Lucy); Charts Upda
Indeed.
Regarding Studio Ghibli, there's some news from this past week (courtesy of ANN):
Hayao Miyazaki to Receive Honorary Award from Oscars' Academy Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors voted on Tuesday to award director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki with an Honorary Award at the Academy's 6th Annual Governors Awards on November 8.
The Governors Awards celebrate lifetime achievements of members of the film industry. The Oscar statuette of the Honorary Award is given to "to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy."
The Academy previously honored Miyazaki for his work on Spirited Away with an Oscar for Best Animated Film in 2003. The Academy also invited Miyazaki to join its ranks in June. Miyazaki received at least three earlier invitations, but he declined each time.
Miyazaki retired from directing feature films last year.
Screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière and actress Maureen O'Hara will also receive Honorary Awards at the ceremony.
Goro Miyazaki Discusses Himself and His Father At a September 2 event in Tokyo's Shibuya district promoting his upcoming TV anime Sanzoku no Musume Ronja, Gorō Miyazaki, an anime director and son of the world-famous Hayao Miyazaki, shed some light on how he sees himself vis-a-vis his dad.
When asked whether he would be his father's successor, he replied, "I can't, and don't, think of myself as a writer. I can't be a post-Hayao Miyazaki [sic], there's no way I can." In addition, he said, "I can do work if I'm given a theme and if I have the right circumstances. I can't be like him and have my own studio and make things from original works, from my own ideas."
Sanzoku no Musume Ronja, based on the Swedish children's book series Ronja the Robber's Daughter, premieres on NHK BS Premium on October 11 at 7 PM.
It's still a shame the studio had creative differences with Mamoru Hosoda in the early 2000s. He's since proven to be an incredible animator and storyteller, and certainly the best in the business right now. Not only have his films received critical acclaim (he's been sweeping the animated categories since 2006), but his last film The Wolf Children in 2012 became the highest-grossing animated film of all-time without any prior brand recognition.
But then again, perhaps he wouldn't be the incredible director he has become today if he had stayed with Studio Ghibli. He's also recently founded his own animated studio, Studio Chizu, at long last and it's rumored his next work will be released next year.

Week 6 07 (--) ¥80 million ($0.77 million), 0, ¥80 million ($0.77 million), In the Hero (Toei) NEW 08 (06) ¥64 million ($0.62 million), -43%, ¥2.74 billion ($26.9 million), Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Week 5 09 (07) ¥53 million ($0.51 million), -32%, ¥3.29 billion ($32.1 million), Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 8 10 (08) ¥39 million ($0.37 million), -41%, ¥470 million ($4.5 million), Into the Storm (Warner Bros.) Below: ¥36 million ($0.34 million), -38%, ¥6.45 billion ($63.0 million), Maleficent (Disney) Week 10 ¥34 million ($0.32 million), -46%, ¥2.74 billion ($26.8 million), Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 8 ¥30 million ($0.28 million), -44%, ¥3.06 billion ($29.9 million), Godzilla (Toho) Week 7
>Stand By Me, Doraemon saw a steep decline over the weekdays now that Summer Vacation is over, which indicates that despite its strong legs and wide-demographic appeal, it is still attracting a significant family audience. But it didn't plummet the same way Pokemon or films that skew almost exclusively to families/children, so it's still going to show weekend strength throughout September.
>Non-Stop will likely debut with the normal low-profile action film in the mid-¥100 million ($1.5 million) range.
>In the Hero may be another live-action dud from Toei, but it is doing somewhat decent from what I can tell that it might come closer to ¥100 million ($1 million) than ¥50 million ($500,000).
Overall, drops tend to be a little rough this weekend since it's the first post-Summer, but unlike the last couple years where the 1st of Sept. (the 1st of every month is a discount day) fell on a weekend resulting in films dropping in the 40%+ range the following weekend, that shouldn't be the case this weekend since Sept. 1st was on a Monday, so weekend drops should be pretty standard (family/children films seeing the worst holds).

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast - Summer is Over :(
Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chain Weekend Admissions (09/06-07)
91,137 (-29%) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 5 76,137 (-39%) - Lupin III (Toho) Week 2 37,850 (-08%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 6 36,499 (--) - Non-Stop (Gaga) NEW 36,480 (-44%) - Lucy (Toho-Towa) Week 2 32,834 (-30%) - Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 4 14,366 (--) - In the Hero (Toei) NEW 13,810 (--) - Ghost in the Shell: Arise Border 4 - Ghosts Stand Alone (Aniplex) NEW 12,971 (-43%) - Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Week 5 11,411 (-41%) - Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 8 _____ 6,908 (-50%) - Maleficent (Disney) Week 10 6,411 (-55%) - Into the Storm (Warner Bros.) Week 3 6,053 (-52%) - Godzilla (Toho) Week 7
Great hold for Stand By Me, Doraemon, earning its 5th-consecutive week on top and it could have become the #1 film this Summer in the process (overtaking Maleficent).
Huge for Rurouni Kenshin 2. The next film is being released next weekend, so clearly fans who haven't seen this one yet came out this weekend before the new film is released.
Ghost in the Shell: Arise Border 4 appears to have debuted in the Top 10, but most of its screens come from these locations. But given it would still rank 10th if it ranks behind Transformers and Marnie overall, it should have at least a 10th place debut secured.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Estimates (09/06-07)
Weekend Estimates (09/06-07)
01 (01) ¥369 million ($3.5 million), -29%, ¥6.41 billion ($62.7 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 5 02 (02) ¥275 million ($2.6 million), -39%, ¥1.09 billion ($10.5 million), Lupin III (Toho) Week 2 03 (05) ¥171 million ($1.6 million), -03%, ¥4.56 billion ($44.2 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 6 04 (04) ¥130 million ($1.2 million), -30%, ¥1.89 billion ($18.2 million), Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 4 05 (--) ¥126 million ($1.1 million), 0, ¥126 million ($1.1 million), Non-Stop (Gaga) NEW 06 (03) ¥112 million ($1.0 million), -44%, ¥625 million ($6.0 million), Lucy (Toho-Towa) Week 2 07 (06) ¥63 million ($0.61 million), -44%, ¥2.73 billion ($26.8 million), Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Week 5 08 (--) ¥56 million ($0.54 million), 0, ¥56 million ($0.54 million), In the Hero (Toei) NEW 09 (07) ¥46 million ($0.44 million), -40%, ¥3.28 billion ($32.0 million), Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 8 10 (08) ¥29 million ($0.27 million), -55%, ¥450 million ($4.3 million), Into the Storm (Warner Bros.) Week 3
>Stand By Me, Doraemon wins its 5th-consecutive week on top, and is very close to becoming the #1 of the Summer. While its weekdays have become much weaker, its weekend business isn't going to weaken much, so it's still on track to reach ¥7.5 billion ($75 million) or more. ¥7.55 billion is needed to become the Highest-Grossing non-Ghibli/Disney animated film of all-time.
>Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc barely dropped from last weekend. The sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, opens this upcoming weekend, so this was the last weekend for many fans to see it before it loses a lot of screens/showtimes. However, it's still doing great numbers, so I'm not expecting it to plummet next weekend. The fact it's coming close to ¥5 billion ($50 million) is incredible and easily bests any Warner Bros. film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
>Non-Stop has a pretty standard debut for its genre. It'll earn around ¥400/500 million ($4/5 million).
>In the Hero has a meh debut, another disappointing showing for Toei.
>Ghost in the Shell: Arise Border 4 may be in 10th place instead of Into the Storm. The last Ghost in the Shell in June opened to ¥24 million, and this one looks like it performed a little better.

Japanese Trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy:
P.E.R.F.E.C.T.
Superhero films, with the exception of Spider-Man, perform very poorly in Japan (most get lucky earning the equivalent of $50 million in the US), so focusing almost exclusively on Rocket and Groot is the best way to get audiences to possibly take an interest in the film.
Guardians of the Galaxy opens this Saturday, and Disney is reducing Guardians of the Galaxy movie tickets by 65% at all cinema chains during its first 3 days, or its opening weekend, with Monday being a holiday. Let's see if it can surprise.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Estimates (09/06-07)
It does open against Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, the second half to the current film in release that is edging closer and closer to $50 million, though. It's going to see a big opening, biggest of the year contender for sure.
But I think Guardians of the Galaxy will do fine, though, and it should outgross all the other superhero films this year (not that they had much impact...) except for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking (09/06-07)
Weekend Ranking (09/06-07)
01 (01) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 5 02 (02) Lupin III (Toho) Week 2 03 (05) Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 6 04 (04) Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 4 05 (--) Non-Stop (Gaga) DEBUT 06 (03) Lucy (Toho-Towa) Week 2 07 (06) Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Week 5 08 (--) In the Hero (Toei) DEBUT 09 (07) Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 8 10 (08) Into the Storm (Warner Bros.) Week 3
>Stand By Me, Doraemon is still atop the box-office for a 5th-consecutive week, earning ¥373,775,900 ($3.6 million) with 271,138 admissions. After 5 weeks in release, the first ever 3D Doraemon film, directed by acclaimed director Takashi Yamazaki, is up to ¥6.43 billion ($62.9 million) and 4.84 million admissions.
>Lupin III holds onto second place, grossing ¥283,343,200 ($2.7 million) with 212,523 admissions. After 2 weeks in release, the live-action adaptation of the popular Lupin III character has exceeded ¥1 billion ($10 million).
>Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc rises two spots and back into the Top 3. The second half of the two-part sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, opens this Saturday so everyone who hasn't seen the first half yet clearly went out this weekend to catch it before Part 2 opens.
After 6 weeks, it has become the highest-grossing live-action film of the calendar year, having earned ¥4.59 billion ($44.6 million) and 3.55 million admissions for a 52% increase over the first film in 2012 so far. This franchise is everything Warner Bros. has needed in Japan post-Harry Potter, having had many disappointing results (most notably The Hobbit trilogy bombing) since then.
>Non-Stop was the weekend's top debut, taking in ¥121,677,000 ($1.1 million) with 94,250 admissions on 198 screens. The debut is 6% stronger than last year's Taken 2.
>In the Hero had to settle for just 8th, making only ¥47,283,400 ($455,000) with 35,479 admissions on 200 screens. Once again, Toei has another disappointing live-action film on their hands.

Re: Japan Box Office: Marvel/DC Box-Office History
# of Seats @ Toho, Movix, Kinezo, 109 Cinemas for Saturday (9/13) Approx. ~40% of the Market
284,849 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (NEW) 122,707 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Week 6) 120,483 - Guardians of the Galaxy (NEW) 100,894 - Lady Maiko (NEW) 93,048 - Lupin III (Week 3) 46,246 - Hot Road (Week 5) 45,910 - Non-Stop (Week 2) 43,133 - Lucy (Week 3) 42,508 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 7) 34,529 - Cardfight! Vanguard: Neon Messiah (NEW)
Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends has a ton of seats, pretty much every theater has it playing on their biggest screens, and presales are looking very strong. It'll easily win the weekend, and could have the biggest opening weekend of the year. Biggest 3-Day of the year is almost assured with Monday being a holiday.
Guardians of the Galaxy will have to contend with Stand By Me, Doraemon for 2nd place. Lady Maiko has some poor presales, and while it shouldn't have many, it's unlikely to debut above 4th place, though Lupin III will probably beat it, too.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends is opening in 335 theaters; Guardians of the Galaxy in 329; Lady Maiko in 299; Card Fight! Vanguard in 80.
