Post Re: Japan Box Office: When Marnie Was There News- Trailer &
Image

Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (far left above), along with the cast members, announced yesterday that his new film, When Marnie Was There, has officially been completed!

When Marnie Was There will be the first Studio Ghibli film without any involvement from co-founders Hayao Miyazaki (retired), Isao Takahata, or long-time producer Toshio Suzuki (retired from producing).

Hiromasa Yonebayashi was Studio Ghibli's youngest director (37) when he made his debut in 2010, and was later named as Hayao Miyazaki's successor after much speculation following his retirement announcement last year.

The trailer was also aired for the first time yesterday:

Adapted from Joan G. Robinson's children's novel When Marnie Was There (or Omoide no Marnie), it's a coming-of-age story about a young girl that befriends another girl named Marnie, who just so happens to be a ghost.

The film's theme song, 'Fine on the Outside', is written and performed by Priscilla Ahn. It marks the first time that a Studio Ghibli film has theme song entirely in English.

This is Hiromasa's second feature film, his debut film, Arrietty, grossed ¥9.25 billion ($111.9 million) in 2010 to become Studio Ghibli's most-successful non-Miyazaki film, as well as the highest-grossing film by a first-time director in Japan.

When Marnie Was There opens on July 19th.

Weekend Forecast [07/05-06]

Image

01 (--) ¥680 million ($6.6 million), 0, Maleficent (Disney) NEW
02 (--) ¥230 million ($2.2 million), 0, ¥310 million ($3.0 million), Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) NEW

03 (01) ¥209 million ($2.0 million), -24%, ¥24.65 billion ($241.9 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 17
04 (02) ¥133 million ($1.2 million), -22%, ¥890 million ($8.7 million), Mission Impossible: Samurai (Shochiku) Week 3
05 (--) ¥90 million ($880,000), 0, ¥120 million ($1.1 million), Documentary of AKB48: The Time Has Come (Toho Video Division) NEW
06 (04) ¥82 million ($800,000), -27%, ¥340 million ($3.3 million), Thirst (Gaga) Week 2
07 (--) ¥75 million ($730,000), 0, Anpanman: The Apple Boy and Everyone's Wishes! (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) NEW
08 (03) ¥70 million ($680,000), -41%, ¥320 million ($3.1 million), Transcendence (Shochiku/Pony Canyon) Week 2
09 (05) ¥64 million ($620,000), -35%, ¥1.24 billion ($12.1 million), Noah (Paramount) Week 4
10 (06) ¥43 million ($410,000), -49%, ¥200 million ($1.9 million), The Grudge: The Beginning of the End (Showgate) Week 2

And after 16-consecutive weeks or 4-straight months, we will finally get a new #1 film at the box-office! Congrats to Frozen for its incredible, record tying run atop the box-office.

>Maleficent looks poised to breakout (at least a a bit above expectations), with strong pre-sales and robust morning/afternoon tickets sales as well. If it opens to ¥600/700 million ($6-7 million), then it could get to ¥4.5-5 billion ($45-50 million).

So, depending on where its run ends up in China and Mexico, Japan looks like it could be Angelina Jolie's best market once again (last 3 being Changeling, The Tourist, and Salt) since both of those markets look to finish below $50 million.

>Edge of Tomorrow is struggling somewhat out of the gate with a Friday that indicates a weekend of ¥200-250 million. Last weekend's previews looked solid, and they were widespread, so they could be causing a deflated opening. If its total is over ¥400 million ($4 million) after including Friday and last weekend's previews, I wouldn't be too worried about the "low" debut. It could still be a ¥2 billion ($20 million) contender, which would improve upon Oblivion by 50%. Tom Cruise's star power in Japan does seem to be fading, however.

Like I said, expect Oblivion +20% numbers for Edge of Tomorrow.

$6.6m does seem unusually large for Maleficent. Disney would have 17 weekends at #1.

It's nice to finally see a different film at #1.

I was expecting an opening of $4/5 million would be done, but ticket sales just look stronger than that.

I put such faith in the forecast you posted that these are basically weekend estimates for me. Japan isn't the sort of market for huge opening weekend surprises.

-Toho Cinemas Biggest Opening Weekends since 2013

Very, very huge for Maleficent. This likely locks up 600,000+ admissions for the weekend, meaning we could see a weekend north of ¥800 million ($8 million+). And an opening over ¥800 million makes a total of ¥5-6 billion ($50-60 million) resonable.

Edge of Tomorrow did 15,234 admissions at Toho yesterday, which would out it on track for 150-200,000 admissions and ¥200-250 million ($2-2.5 million). Remember though that this doesn't include what it made on Friday, or last weekend's previews.

Maleficent will be #1 again next weekend, too. So that'll give Disney 18-consecutive weeks at #1.

Saturday admissions were above Frozen and Monsters University, but unlike those films, Maleficent saw a decrease on Sunday and ended up just below them for the weekend.

With 120,498 admissions at Toho Cinemas, it should have between 550,000-600,000 admissions for the weekend. It's hard to say what the avg. ticket price is, but it shouldn't be too high since the 3D share is really, really low.

I think it missed ¥800 million ($8 million), and will come in around ¥760/770 million ($7.4/7.5 million) in the morning. Disney is reporting a $7.1 million opening weekend, but that honestly looks a little too low. And they tend to underestimate most weeks. Regardless though, this is the best opening for a live-action film since 2012, and a total of ¥5 billion ($50 million) is still looking good.

I'm working on the Weekend Estimates now, and will go into detail for Edge of Tomorrow then.

Maleficent took in about 540,000 admissions according to estimates, which will put it below ¥750 million unless its avg. ticket price comes in higher than expected. Very strong opening, though, and ¥5 billion ($50 million) is doable. If it passes ¥4.65 billion (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), it'll become Angelina Jolie's most-successful film in Japan, and Japan will likely be Maleficent's best market, too.

Edge of Tomorrow did about 160,000 admissions based on estimates, which should be enough to beat Frozen and debut in 2nd place. It should also be comfortably above ¥200 million ($2 million) for the weekend unless a lot of old Tom Cruise fans came out to see it, which will drive the avg. ticket price down. And remember, the film had robust previews last weekend that are unaccounted for. They'll be included in the total (not the opening weekend).

In the end, it's an underwhelming opening and should have opened higher. Legs will be fine given the time of year, but ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) is the likely ceiling unless WOM is extremely positive to push it closer to ¥2.0 billion ($20 million). At least it's very likely to beat Oblivion though.

I don't really know why the latest Grudge held so well. It wouldn't have added any screens/showtimes, so there must have been some stage greetings over the weekend or something.

Noah showed a lot of promise opening weekend and during its second week of release, but since then it's began to fall off a cliff. It's still a success, but ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) shouldn't have been an issue after its second week and it's going to end up with ¥1.35 billion ($13.2 million) or so now.

And not included in the estimates happen to be 2 openers. The latest Anpanman will definitely be in the Top 10 in the morning, and may have down well enough for a #5 spot. And the newest documentary film about AKB48 doesn't look as strong as the last couple, but it'll still be in the Top 10, too, perhaps in 7th/8th. Estimates can't be accurately gathered because both films are almost limited releases.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Frozen Finally Dethro
Weekend Ranking (07/05-06)

Image

01 (--) Maleficent (Disney) DEBUT
02 (--) Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) DEBUT

03 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 17
04 (02) Mission Impossible: Samurai (Shochiku) Week 3
05 (04) Thirst (Gaga) Week 2
06 (--) Anpanman: The Apple Boy and Everyone's Wishes! (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) DEBUT
07 (06) The Grudge: The End of the Beginning (Showgate) Week 2
08 (03) Transcendence (Shochiku/Pony Canyon) Week 2
09 (05) Noah (Paramount) Week 4
10 (--) The Documentary of AKB48: The Time Has Come (Toho Video Division) DEBUT

>Maleficent made her way to her final market and debuted with ¥691,678,400 ($6.8 million) with 500,837 admissions on 643 screens. The number is below previously reported estimates, but is still very strong nonetheless. There may be a little frontloading to it seeing as it's Jolie's first film in 3 years and with it being played in front of Frozen for 4 months now. But with summer just a couple weeks away, legs will still be good enough to reach ¥4 billion ($40 million) if not ¥5 billion ($50 million).

>Edge of Tomorrow actually came in a bit above estimates, taking in ¥259,056,500 ($2.5 million) with 172,211 admissions on 632 screens. This is a solid start, and with last weekend's previews and Fridays' take included, its total is up to ¥459.6 million ($4.5 million). ¥2 billion ($20 million) is in play, but don't be surprised if it finishes closer to ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).

>Frozen brings its 17-week total up to ¥24.63 billion ($241.5 million) with 19.35 million admissions. It has noticeably slowed down adding less than ¥400 million ($3.7 million) for the week, but such a figure in its 17th week is massive (only Spirited Away has a higher 17th week). It's looking to finish with ¥26 billion ($255 million) as long as the DVD release on July 16th and the July 19th openers don't kill it, but if it's withing striking range of Titanic's ¥26.2 billion total, Disney should and probably will go for it.

>The latest Anpanman, the first since its creator passed away, earned ¥71,494,980 ($700,000) with 59,798 admissions on 152 screens. I believe this is the second highest opening in the very-long running series.

>The Documentary of AKB48: The Time Has Come definitely came in lower than the last few documentaries with that rank, but no figures have been reported yet. This one was kinda hyped by including some "infamous" handshaking event (fans pay to shake the hands of the members...), but that clearly had no pull.

Any interest being shown in the Godzilla opening on the 25th?

Is it going to be able to match Pacific Rim's $14m?

Oddly enough, I don't think it will. For some reason Godzilla hasn't matched Pacific Rim in the Asian markets, yet exceeded it almost everywhere else.

Godzilla will do fine, certainly better than Pacific Rim which was viewed as more of a rip-off rather a homage. It is worth noting that reviews among critics and audiences were quite positive, and DVD sales were good, too, despite it disappointing at the box-office. The upcoming sequel may get another chance here.

With Godzilla, it's clear what the audience is getting and Toho (creators of Godzilla) partook in the film production and will be distributing it in Japan. Japanese interest in Godzilla has certainly diminished since the 50/60s though, with most of the 80s-00s films disappointing/bombing, and there could still be some backlash towards another Hollywood attempt, so it does remain a wild card. I've also read complains that the new Godzilla design is "too fat" and has a roar that is far too deep. It would have helped by including one of Godzilla's original enemies I believe, too, instead of the MUTOs.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens in a couple weeks.

These are incredibly silly complaints if true. I suspect it's just Japanese being ultra picky because Godzilla comes from Japan and they want to show that they know him best.

I'm sure it's a fairly small group that have made such comments.

The premiere yesterday went well, and Akira Takarada (who appeared in the original Godzilla in 1954 and a few others) was even there and seemed generally happy to be there.

Here are some photos:
