Re: would it be wise to make a Cars 3?
I know Planes isn't Pixar. But it's a spin-off of a Pixar property, so even for some people who know it's not their work, it's still guilt by association.
I'm sure that the people who took issue with Planes were upset that Lasseter didn't act out of pure, high-minded idealism and reject a non-Pixar, (originally) direct-to-DVD Cars spinoff animated in India because artistic integrity, profits be damned.

I'm definitely of the "eh, whatever" stance when it comes to Cars 3. It probably won't be a very good movie, but it was inevitable that Pixar was going to have to make it. With the amount of money that it stands to make for them and for Disney off of merchandising alone, they'd have to be extremely high to not make it at some point.
And as far as the whole news announcement is concerned, TServo nailed it: they're finally doing The Incredibles 2. I'm certainly okay with Pixar doing another Cars movie as long as it means that they're also getting around to that Incredibles sequel that we've been waiting for since November 2004.
