 Re: The IMAX Thread
WTF is Mockingjay not getting IMAX? Even if it increases in admissions, its will probably stay flat with the firsts opening weekend.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
Because it doesn't need it. And Interstellar is a much more IMAX-friendly film anyway - no point competing against it.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
But it needs it to have any chance at approaching Catching Fire's gross. And it does need it. The Hunger Games movies look great on the biggest screen possible. Interstellar doens't deserve a whole month to itself.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
When a film grosses over $140m in 3 days, it doesn't really need any help actually. And Interstellar does deserve a month to itself. It's 2014's Gravity.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
People are going to be calling it a bomb. And I think Interstellar will open far bigger than Gravity, but not have as good of legs.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
You underestimate the big headlines. "Mockingjay Part 1 opens to less than 160 million: Is this the end of blockbusters?"

 Re: The IMAX Thread
That would never happen (well, maybe on April 1st), and if it did, people would just laugh it off.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
Mockingjay will be fine without IMAX. It's not like fans of the books and/or the first two films won't show up just because it's not in IMAX.
As for the prospective opening headlines: who cares? Catching Fire didn't reach as high as expected over that weekend, but then had a great second weekend. Unless Mockingjay sucks (or hell, even if it does), it's understood that the film is probably going to follow more or less the same pattern, as the Twilight sequels that were released in November did.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
Yes, but that could be the difference between 400 million and 395 million. The Hunger Games is such a huge franchise, I'm sure if they wanted IMAX screens, they could easily get them. They just don't seem to care.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
My guess is that Paramount swung a substantial contract with IMAX for Interstellar, which makes sense considering that a significant amount of the film is shot with IMAX film. It would suck for them to have so much of the movie shot using that technology, only to have to vacate those screens within two weeks.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
They could split them. And I'm sure Interstellar will get a re-expansion for Oscar season, so it could get them back then. But it appears official that it gets them for the whole month of November, so it doesn't matter.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
I presume Mockingjay will get all the Premium Large Format screens for its OW, and those have as much of an upcharge as IMAX, so it won't be a total loss.

 Re: The IMAX Thread
It won't be any loss. IMAX makes up such a small amount of a films' gross anyway.

So the Hobbit has IMAX for a month and a half. Should help its legs and opening.
