Weekend Forecast [04/12-13]

01 (01) ¥690 million ($6.8 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 5
02 (--) ¥225 million ($2.2 million), Crows: Explode (Toho) NEW
03 (02) ¥95 million ($930,000), Doraemon: Nobita's New Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho) Week 6
04 (--) ¥90 million ($880,000), L-DK (Toei) NEW
05 (03) ¥85 million ($830,000), Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai (Toei) Week 3
06 (04) ¥80 million ($790,000), The Snow White Murder Case (Shochiku) Week 3
07 (05) ¥65 million ($640,000), Team Batista: Kerberos's Final Portrait (Toho) Week 3
08 (06) ¥45 million ($440,000), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox) Week 4
09 (07) ¥40 million ($395,000), One Third (Kadokawa) Week 2
10 (08) ¥30 million ($295,000), Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 3 (Toei) Week 5

>Frozen will easily claim its 5th week atop the box-office. This will make its run at #1 the longest for any imported-film since 2011's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (6-consecutive weeks at #1).

Frozen exceeded ¥8 billion ($80 million) on Tuesday, so it's going to be very close to ¥9 billion ($90 million) after Sunday.

>Crows: Explode has some rather mediocre pre-sales, and interest in general isn't very high. Its predecessors, Crows Zero and Crows Zero II were pretty successful in 2007/2009 (¥2.3 billion and ¥3.0 billion, respectively), so it seems to be suffering from the 5-year wait.

A general rule for non-annual franchises like Doraemon or Kamen Rider in Japan is that the sooner the sequel(s) is released, the better its box-office will be. 3 year, 4 year+ waits usually results in sharp decreases for the sequel(s). Unless it's a very long wait, 10-15 years for example, and then it can sometimes prove beneficial at the box-office.

The beginning of April is normally slow, as most of the major films are released closer to Golden Week at the end of the month. And this year's Golden Week schedule is the most-impressive since 2010's, so the box-office will begin to thrive again soon (aside from Frozen right now of course).

Theater/Screen increases are quite rare in Japan, so I wouldn't count on it. Once any film opens, that's just about as wide as it's going to go.

However, films maintain their theater counts much longer than most other countries I believe. It's pretty common for a film to still be playing in as many theaters as it opened 4, 5, or even 6 or more weeks in release. Screens/Showtimes are what get cut on a weekly basis.

Ok, cool. So hopefully it can keep 21 cinemas for at least 3 weeks.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (04/12-13)
Frozen is still holding very, very well, down just 8% compared to last Saturday. If Sunday follows a similar pattern to last week's, then the weekend drop will be around 10-12%. Whether the weekend drop is over/under 10% doesn't rally matter considering how impressive either number is.

If it drops 10%, the weekend gross will be around ¥765 million ($7.5 million), and its 5-week total will exceed ¥9 billion for sure I believe. ¥9.1 billion ($89 million) looks likely after Sunday, its 31st day in release.

Biggest Fifth Weekends/Five Week Totals (2001-)

¥1.069 billion (+10%) / ¥10.52 billion -> ¥20.30 billion - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (04/12-13)
$150 million (~¥15.5 billion) is certainly challenging, but it's doable. I'm thinking more like ¥13 billion ($130 million or so). Which is a staggering figure, and I'll list what it'll have accomplished by reaching that goal when or if it eventually does, among them would be the most-attended imported film since... The Last Samurai 11 years ago.

Also, ¥13.71 billion is required for it to break into the Top 10 Films of All-Time.

Its first full post-Spring Break week is looking at about a 40% drop, so it's not going to pull a Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, or Avatar type mid/late-run, which all maintained their holiday numbers for many weeks or months after the holidays were over.

Frozen has really benefited from little to no competition since it opened. It hasn't lost any screens or showtimes since it opened (it has gained a few more since actually) due to how strong it has become and with no openers having enough pull to make theaters cut any either.

That'll begin to change starting next weekend (April 19-20) with Detective Conan 18, Crayon Shin-chan 22, and Captain America 2. Conan should take most of the bigger screens, and combined, they should cut into Frozen's hold onto the rest.

And things get rougher the following weekend (April 26-27), when many films open in time for Golden Week. Among them are The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Thermae Romae II, and Partners 3. Any large screens Frozen still has left will be distributed between them, and with other smaller openers opening, showtimes will take a hit during this weekend.

If it can survive all the upcoming competition (screen/showtimes are the biggest issue), May is weak enough again this year that it could develop strong late legs and perhaps find a way to reach ¥15 billion+ ($150 million).

>Frozen maintained more of its Sunday audience vs. Saturday when comparing it to last weekend, and likely secured itself a sub-10% weekend drop. Estimates have it dropping about 6%, putting it right on the cusp of an ¥800 million fifth-weekend. And as you can see below, only 6 other films have achieved a fifth-weekend above the mark:

¥400 million+

>Crows: Explode manages to do slightly better than it was expected to after Saturday morning's ticket sales. It is still down over 50% compared to Crows Zero II, so it is still (an expected) disappointment after the 5-year wait. ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) is its target.

>Also, if Doraemon pulls off a sub-50% drop this weekend, it'll be the first in the franchise to do it since 2008's film (49.6% drop). It's not really too important, but the franchise usually sees drops close to 60% after Spring Break.

Frozen is on track to hit the ¥10 billion (~$100 million) milestone this upcoming weekend, on either Saturday or Sunday, its 37th/38th day in release.

Depending on which day it exceeds the mark, it'll either tie for the 7th-fastest (with Alice in Wonderland) to the milestone or become 8th-fastest. It will also become the 28th film to earn ¥10 billion at the box-office.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (04/12-13)
From BO.com

Actuals:
Weekend 840.25m Yen ($8.2), -1.2% from LW
Total 9.284 b Yen ($91M)

Corpse again underestimated it :-). next 2 weeks provide us good perspective as there will be competition.

I overestimated last weekend. :P Estimates in general will be less accurate since the tax hike went into effect. It's going to take several weeks/months to have enough examples to use to see which genres and demographics it is having an affect on.

>Frozen... dropped a mere 1% (3% in admissions) in its fifth weekend, taking in ¥842,035,350 ($8.2 million) with 623,785 admissions. Needless to say, it's one of the biggest fifth weekends of all-time, and it's also 10% higher than its opening weekend. Every weekend so far has been higher than its already very impressive opening weekend.

Its 31-day cume is now ¥9.28 billion ($90.7 million) with 7.56 million admissions. It climbed 22 spots on the all-time grossing films chart, and now ranks 37th after just 5 weeks. ¥12 billion ($120 million) is locked up, making it the highest-grossing imported animated film ever ahead of Finding Nemo's ¥11.0 billion, and ¥13 billion ($130 million) is looking likely. We'll see where it goes from there.

There has been very little competition, so it's has maintained a firm hold onto all of its screens and showtimes, but even still, it's ridiculously impressive. Some bigger films are on the horizon, so we'll see how it fares in the upcoming weeks (Detective Conan [4/19], The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [4/25], and Thermae Romae II [4/26]).

>Crows: Explode is well-up over estimates, earning ¥294,041,500 ($2.8 million) with 216,929 admissions on 307 screens. The opening is still down about 49% compared to the last film 5 years ago, but it's much higher than anticipated going into the weekend. If it gets really lucky, it might be able to crawl to a respectable ¥2 billion ($20 million). It really benefited however from the tax hike, as its avg. ticket price was quite high at ¥1,355 ($13.3). That's about an 8% jump over 2013's national average.

>L-DK however shows that the tax hike isn't affecting every film. Playing on 194 screens, it took in only ¥73,450,000 ($720,000) with 63,143 admissions. Down from estimates since it had an avg. ticket price of only ¥1,163 ($11.4). That's is pretty much the norm for a film playing heavily towards females and couples (7/8% below the national average), so the tax hike mattered very little here due to the specific demographic.[/size]

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Memories of Marnie Update
'Memories of Marnie' Lead Casting and Theme Song Artist Revealed:

Image

16-year-old actress Sara Takatsuki (Black President, Otomen, GTO, Daily Lives of High School Boys, Haganai) and 21-year-old actress Kasumi Arimura (Amachan, Hagane no Onna, Clover, Judge) will star in Studio Ghibli's next film, this summer's anime adaptation of Joan G. Robinson's English children's novel classic When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie). Oricon describes the film as Ghibli's first one with dual lead heroines, and it is also the first animated title and first Ghibli title for both actresses.

American musical artist Priscilla Ahn is contributing "Fine on the Outside," a song she wrote when she was in high school, as the film's theme song. It is Ghibli's first theme song entirely in English. (Only Yesterday used a Japanese version of "The Rose," while Whisper of the Heart used both the original English version of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and a Japanese translation.) The film is also Ghibli's first anime feature after Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki retired.

In his second film, director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (2010's The Secret World of Arrietty) is shifting the setting from the novel's Great Britain to a Japanese village on the shores of Hokkaido. Takatsuki will play the 12-year-old Anna (written in kanji characters), while Arimura will play Marnie, the mysterious golden-haired girl who appears before Anna one summer.

About 300 candidates auditioned for the roles of the heroines at the end of last year. Marnie producer Yoshiaki Nishimura said there was a time in film history where "the flawless hero saves the woman," followed by a time for films where "the woman supports the troubled hero." Now, he said, 2014 is the time when "the man doesn't have to save the woman."

When Marnie Was There was among the Top 50 recommended children's books (18th) that Hayao Miyazaki listed for his studio prior to retiring. Also revealed was that it took 20 months to storyboard the film adaptation.

The novel follows a girl who moves with her older foster parents to coastal Norfolk, where the lonely girl forms her first friendship with the ghostly Marnie, haunting the Marsh House. (-CR)

Memories of Marnie opens July 19th.

Advance tickets for Marnie go on sale this Saturday (4/19) at more than 340 theaters.

That's... nearly all the locations it'll be playing at when it opens July 19th. 360 or so theaters is as wide as any film ever goes, so it's really impressive to have probably 95%+ already listed for advance tickets 3 months out. I remember advance tickets went on sale for The Wind Rises in May, but all its locations weren't available immediately.

And anyone who purchases an advance ticket before June 9th will receive a exhibition poster they can later redeem for a chance (1,250 people will be selected) to attend a preview of the film before it opens.

>Detective Conan has only failed to debut in 1st once in the past 17 years, which was in 2010 when up against the mammoth Alice in Wonderland's debut. It could fail to debut on top again this year with another Disney titan, Frozen, still playing so well, but Conan has the edge over Frozen so far this morning at most locations.

Ticket sales at Toho Cinemas are ahead of last year's at the same point in time, and last year's film just so happened to be the biggest opener in the franchise's history. So needless to say, this is a very encouraging sign. And with the tax hike, it "only" has to match the admissions of last year's film to exceed ¥700 million ($7 million) over the weekend. But so far admissions look stronger, so it may climb even higher.

>Frozen lost most of the biggest screens to Conan, thus decreasing its seats by about 13% at Toho Cinemas, and 18% at Movix Cinemas. This marks the first time since it opened that it has lost any seats. In order to defeat Detective Conan, and claim a sixth-consecutive week atop the box-office, it'll need to avoid a drop over ~15%, so it'll be close.

Frozen should also exceed the ¥10 billion ($100 million) milestone today, its 37th day in release, becoming the 28th film to achieve the milestone.

>Crayon Shin-chan and Captain America should also have a close battle to see which of them ranks 3rd over the weekend. Both films should be aiming for ¥200 million ($2.0 million).

Toho Cinemas Admissions (as of 2:30PM)

30,360 - Detective Conan
23,857 - Frozen

That's a pretty huge number for Detective Conan. Unlike Doraemon, it won't slow down drastically into the evening/night so 50,000+ for the day looks likely, and Sunday will be even bigger.

Lupin III vs. Detective Conan did 51,800 at Toho Cinemas on its first day then increased 9.9% on Sunday for 56,924, bringing its weekend to 108,724 admissions at Toho Cinemas and 539,132 admissions overall for the weekend.

Unfortunately, there's no data on how the Lupin crossover film did at the same point in time. Although, last year's Detective Conan film saw a bigger increase on Sunday than the crossover film (older fans of Lupin made the Sunday increase smaller) for comparison.

And that Frozen number is still huge, incredible consistency, down only 5% from last Saturday and could definitely still claim a sixth-consecutive week on top. It's going to be a close race.

Toho Cinemas Admissions (Saturday)

64,398 - Detective Conan
56,681 (-1.6%) - Frozen

That's a massive first day for Detective Conan. It's the biggest Saturday at Toho Cinemas since The Wind Rises last Summer, and 23% stronger than the first day of Lupin III vs. Detective Conan last December.

It looks on course for 130,000+ over the weekend at Toho Cinemas, so 650,000+ overall is doable. And 650,000 admissions would result in a weekend gross of ¥800-850 million ($8-8.5 million+), the best opening of the year, and easily the best opening in the franchise and like 30% better than the average opening.

Frozen is still incredibly strong, too, barely dropping at all. If it's Sunday is equally as strong as last week's, it could see a sixth-weekend above ¥800 million, too!

But the weekend battle in admissions favors Detective Conan.

Toho Cinemas Saturday Admissions (Weekend Admissions)

85,115 (167,188) - The Wind Rises ( 7/20/13)
64,398 (???,???) - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (04/19/14)
59,492 (121,802) - Monsters University ( 7/06/13)
59,192 (123,606) - Frozen (03/15/14)
51,800 (108,724) - Lupin III vs. Detective Conan (12/07/13)
42,541 (94,650) - Doraemon: Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (03/08/14)
42,537 (91,182) - The Eternal Zero (12/21/13)
40,414 (74,131) - Midsummer Formula (06/29/13)
38,885 (85,462) - Pokemon: ExtremeSpeed Genesect - Mewtwo Awakens (7/13/13)
37,960 (88,488) - SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part I (11/01/13)

Toho Cinemas Admissions (as of 02:30PM)

Saturday (as of 02:30PM):
30,360 - Detective Conan
23,857 - Frozen

Sunday (as of 02:30PM):
42,126 (+38.8%) - Detective Conan
38,683 (+62.1%) - Frozen

An insane, insane Sunday so far (and it's no holiday or discount day either).

Detective Conan has basically matched the admissions of Lupin III vs. Detective Conan for the weekend already (105,000 vs 108,000) at Toho Cinemas* with half of Sunday still to go! And Frozen is still putting up crazy numbers in its sixth-week of release, numbers that are still greater than its huge opening weekend. It may have slowed down some on the weekdays, but it's weekend business has lost no momentum whatsoever.

Detective Conan just might have an small chance at reaching 700,000 admissions for the weekend, which is just crazy. It would come close to ¥900 million ($9 million) if it does that thanks to the recent tax hike, beating the franchise record by more than 30%...what is going on here. :P

Both films are very likely helping one another due to sell outs or near sell outs, and they're both greatly helping the latest Crayon Shin-chan film a boost which is up nearly 50% over last year's film. It's a very stable franchise, earning nearly the same every year, so clearly it's benefiting from Conan and Frozen sellouts.

*Reminder: Toho Cinemas represents ~20% of the nation's theaters and screens.

at BO forums folks are talking about Frozen beating SA at least in dollar gross as its weekend business has not slowed down at all. Do you think its remotely possible. Its going to see another holiday boost after next week? 150M+ seem to be a lock at this point.

It's not doing over $244 million. It's tracking over 20% behind Spirited Away after 6 weeks despite its weekend business being so strong each week. Spirited Away's weekends are still bigger, and its weekdays are much, much bigger. It'll also still be tracking behind Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo after 6 weeks, and the former hasn't had any holiday support yet.

It doesn't have the weekday support, which is more important than weekends. It'll require a gross of at least ¥25 billion, more than double what its 8 week total will probably be.
