Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking [10/5-6]
Weekend Ranking [10/5-6] 1 (1) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) Week 2 2 (2) The King of Apology (Toho) Week 2 3 (3) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 3 4 (4) Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill (Toho) Week 4 5 (5) The Wind Rises (Toho) Week 12 6 (6) Elysium (Sony) Week 3 7 (-) R100 (Warner Bros.) DEBUT8 (8) The Wolverine (Sony) Week 4 9 (9) Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Aniplex) Week 6 10 (11) Unforgiven (Warner Bros.) Week 4 11 (7) Boundary of Emptiness (Aniplex) Week 2 * Like Father, Like Son wins it's second weekend with a very impressive ¥291,627,300 ($3.0 million) and 232,655 admissions weekend, down just 8% from it's opening weekend. It's total has already exceeded ¥1.3 billion ($14 million) as well, and the film is now a strong contender for ¥2.5 billion ($25 milliion+) or maybe ¥3 billion ($30 million+). * The King of Apology also did very, very well in it's second weekend dropping a mere 7%. It earned ¥250,640,000 ($2.6 million) over the weekend, bringing it's total up to ¥818,400,000 ($8.4 million). A total of ¥2 billion ($20 million+) is looking possible. * Despicable Me 2 brings it's 16-day cume to ¥1.68 billion ($17.3 million) and 1.31 million admissions. It's definitely going to cross the ¥2 billion mark, and probably settle with ¥2.2/2.3 billion ($24/25 million), practically doubling what it's predecessor earned. * Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill has been a little frontloaded following it's good opening, but has earned ¥1,504,200,000 ($15.6 million) so far after four weeks. It will be aiming for ¥2 billion ($20 million+) as well. * The Wind Rises stays strong within the Top 5 after it's twelfth-week in release, and has earned ¥11.49 billion ($117.7 million) and 9.26 million admissions to date, down just 19% week-to-week. *And the only debut for the weekend comes from R100. Playing on 223 screens, the film only grossed ¥52,823,200 ($544,000) and 37,983 admissions over the weekend.

Brian wrote: So, the hobbit 2 is coming out next year?, in March? Feb. 28th. They're moving the franchise back to Spring like the Lord of the Rings. December was an unusual release date for the first Hobbit film. Dr. Lecter wrote: Was Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters ever released in Japan? No, unfortunately. And it's unlikely it'll get a postponed release in 2014/2015 like what happens with some imported-films, too, since it was originally going to be released theatrically in the fall but no distributor picked it up, so it was canceled. And the Blu-Ray/DVD has been released in the market.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast [10/12-13]
Monday's holiday (so many of these in Sept-Nov...) has delayed any weekend estimates or actuals until tomorrow, but Toho Cinemas (~20% of the nation's theaters) weekend admissions are available:
Toho Cinemas Weekend Admissions [10/12-13]
52,845 (NEW) - Girl in the Sunny Place, DEBUT 31,121 (-22%) - King of Apology, Week 3 26,551 (-28%) - Like Father, Like Son, Week 3 19,945 (-35%) - Despicable Me 2, Week 4 8,576 (-31%) - Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill, Week 5 7,217 (-23%) - The Wind Rises, Week 13 6,630 (NEW) - Oshin, DEBUT 6,383 (NEW) - Trance, DEBUT 2,996 (-41%) - Elysium, Week 4 2,331 (+02%) - Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Week 7 2,165 (-25%) - Chronicle, Week 4 2,066 (-54%) - R100, Week 2 1,921 (-54%) - The Wolverine, Week 5 1,573 (NEW) - Forbidden Love, DEBUT 1,403 (-55%) - Tomica Tomy Double Feature, Week 2 1,127 (-57%) - Passion, Week 2 875 (-57%) - Why Don't You Play in Hell?, Week 2 676 (-16%) - Boundary of Emptiness, Week 3 629 (-15%) - Renoir, Week 3 628 (NEW) - The Reunion, DEBUT 433 (-70%) - Unforgiven, Week 5 318 (-61%) - The After-Dinner Mysteries, Week 11
Good for Girl in the Sunny Place, but I don't think that's good enough to make the 240-250,000 admissions it needs to break ¥300 million for the weekend (Toho releases generally do better here). I see more along the lines of 215-220,000 admissions for ¥270-280 million ($2.8-3.0 million). Which isn't bad, but another ¥300 million opener this time of year (generally very week for the BO) would have been excellent. For the 3-day Holiday weekend, it will likely exceed ¥350 million ($3.6 million), though.
King of Apology has beaten Like Father, Like Son at Toho locations since they opened, but the latter has always won the weekend. I don't think that'll change this week either. Both films have been performing very well.
Very poor for Oshin. It's been released 30 years too late. It probably missed ¥50 million ($500,000) for the weekend. Had some theatrical version been released in 1984-1985 following the extremely popular drama (audience share avg. was 53%, with a peak of 63% for a single episode!), and with far less competition to worry about in those days, I think it could have had blockbuster potential.
Anohana is a huge success for Aniplex, still refusing to drop-off and looks likely to reach ¥1 billion ($11/12 million) now, having never played on more than 64 screens. I'll wait until it officially reaches the ¥1 billion mark before going back to see which films managed to gross ¥1 billion on so few screens, but I can't remember a single one in recent memory (2010-).

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking [10/12-13]
Weekend Ranking [10/12-13] 1 (-) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Asmik Ace/Toho) DEBUT2 (1) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) Week 3 3 (2) The King of Apology (Toho) Week 3 4 (3) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 4 5 (-) Oshin (Toei) DEBUT6 (4) Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill (Toho) Week 5 7 (5) The Wind Rises (Toho) Week 13 8 (6) Elysium (Sony) Week 4 9 (10) Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Aniplex) Week 7 10 (7) R100 (Warner Bros.) Week 2 11 (-) Trance (Fox) DEBUTThe Girl in the Sunny Place took first place with a solid ¥272,405,650 ($2.8 million) and 208,028 admissions over the weekend on 304 screens. Over the 3-day Holiday Weekend frame, the film earned ¥406,550,000 ($4.1 million). A good start that will bring the film close to ¥2 billion ($20 million). Females represented 92% of the audience share, with women over 40 attracting more than 60% of the weekend audience. Despicable Me 2 was the clear family favorite for the weekend, and has grossed ¥2,033,041,150 ($21 million) and 1,604,785 admissions as of Monday. The film is on it's way to ¥2.5 billion ($25 million+) and perhaps 2 million admissions, quite a spectacular total for an imported non-Disney/Pixar animated-film. Oshin disappoints debuting in only 5th place to ¥70,072,600 ($714,000) and 60,665 admissions on 253 screens.

Anohana will definitely reach ¥1 billion now (aiming for the last week of Oct.), but I'm not sure about White House Down or Man of Steel. WWD is a Sony release meaning it'll be tracked for awhile, but it's not grossing anything to really matter at this point so I'd rule it out even with it being so close. Tracking for MOS, however, stopped fairly early so I'd give it a 50% chance of getting there.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast [10/19-20]
Weekend Forecast [10/19-20] 1 (1) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Asmik Ace/Toho) ¥171 million ($1.8 million) Week 2 2 (2) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) ¥163 million ($1.7 million) Week 4 3 (-) Human Trust (Shochiku) ¥155 million ($1.6 million) DEBUT4 (3) The King of Aplogy (Toho) ¥137 million ($1.4 million) Week 4 5 (4) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) ¥96 million ($980,000) Week 5 6 (-) Diana (Gaga) ¥80 million ($820,000) DEBUT 7 (-) R.I.P.D. (Toho-Towa) ¥60 million ($615,000) DEBUT8 (5) Oshin (Toei) ¥46 million ($470,000) Week 2 9 (7) The Wind Rises (Toho) ¥38 million ($390,000) Week 14 10 (6) Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill (Toho) ¥35 million ($360,000) Week 6 Fairly slow weekend, but stronger than most weekends in October. Next weekend, however, will see the release of the final film in the 'Puella Magi Madoka Magica' trilogy, Magi Madoka Magica 3: The Rebellion Story. The last one opened last October to ¥172 million on only 43 screens (almost a $50,000 2-day pta), and the final film is being released on 3x as many screens ( 129 screens), with 51 of them having midnights and running the film 24 hours during the weekend frame. We could definitely see one of the bigger openings of the year next week approaching ¥500 million.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast [10/19-20]
Saturday Estimates (10/19)
¥76 million ($785,000), -28%, Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) Week 4 ¥70 million ($715,000), 0, Human Trust (Shochiku) DEBUT ¥69 million ($705,000), -30%, The King of Apology (Toho) Week 4 ¥66 million ($675,000), -65%, The Girl in the Sunny Place (Asmik Ace/Toho) Week 2 ¥42 million ($430,000), -41%, Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 5 ¥35 million ($360,000), 0, R.I.P.D (Toho-Towa) DEBUT ¥34 million ($350,000), 0, Diana (Gaga) DEBUT ¥18 million ($190,000), -47%, Oshin (Toei) Week 2 ¥17 million ($180,000), -37%, Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill (Toho) Week 6 ¥16 million ($170,000), -41%, The Wind Rises (Toho) Week 14 ¥8 million ($82,000), -56%, Elysium (Sony) Week 5 ¥6 million ($61,000), -53%, R100 (Warner Bros.) Week 3 ¥5 million ($51,000), -48%, Trance (Fox) Week 2 ¥4 million ($41,000), -69%, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Aniplex) Week 8 ¥3 million ($31,000), -55%, The Wolverine (Fox) Week 6
Many close races this weekend. The top 4 spots could go either way, but 'The Girl in the Sunny Place' won't drop nearly that much for the weekend itself. It had stage greetings last Saturday, which greatly inflated the first day.
'R.I.P.D' and 'Diana' are very close, and films ranked 8-10 are also too close to call for the weekend, too.
Sunday will be an important day.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates [10/19-20]
Weekend Estimates (10/19-20)
1 (1) ¥161 million ($1.65 million), -41%, The Girl in the Sunny Place (Asmik Ace/Toho) Week 2 2 (-) ¥158 million ($1.63 million), 0, Human Trust (Shochiku) DEBUT [259 theaters] 3 (3) ¥157 million ($1.61 million), -21%, The King of Apology (Toho) Week 4 4 (2) ¥155 milion ($1.59 million), -28%, Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) Week 4 5 (4) ¥103 million ($1.07 million), -27%, Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 5 6 (-) ¥68 million ($699,000), 0, R.I.P.D (Toho-Towa) DEBUT [207 theaters] 7 (-) ¥66 million ($674,000), 0, Diana (Gaga) DEBUT [201 theaters] 8 (5) ¥40 million ($405,000), -43%, Oshin (Toei) Week 2 9 (7) ¥36 million ($370,000), -33%, The Wind Rises (Toho) Week 14 10 (6) ¥36 million ($364,000), -35%, Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill (Toho) Week 6 11 (8) ¥15 million ($148,000), -57%, Elysium (Sony) Week 5 12 (9) ¥12 million ($122,000), -55%, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Aniplex) Week 8 13 (10) ¥11 million ($109,000), -58%, R100 (Warner Bros.) Week 3 14 (11) ¥10 million ($107,000), -47%, Trance (Fox) Week 2 15 (12) ¥7 million ($72,000), -54%, The Wolverine (Fox) Week 6
Sunday didn't exactly make any of these races easier to call. The Top 4 are still so close they could easily change with tomorrow's ranking. 'King of Apology' was looking like it would rank a close 4th this weekend yesterday, but it's Sunday outpaced Saturday by so much that it's risen back up in contention for the top spot.
'R.I.P.D' likely edged out 'Diana', though they too are a bit too close to say with certainty.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking [10/19-20]
Weekend Ranking [10/19-20] 1 (1) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Asmik Ace/Toho) Week 2 2 (2) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) Week 4 3 (3) The King of Apology (Toho) Week 4 4 (-) Human Trust (Shochiku) DEBUT5 (4) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 5 6 (-) Diana (Gaga) DEBUT 7 (-) R.I.P.D (Toho-Towa) DEBUT8 (5) Oshin (Toei) Week 2 9 (6) Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill (Toho) Week 6 10 (7) The Wind Rises (Toho) Week 14 11 (8) Elysium (Sony) Week 5 Some mixed results compared to estimates. The holdovers were reasonably accurate, but the openers... not so much. The Top 4 films weren't so close in the end either. 'The Girl in the Sunny Place' remains on top for a 2nd weekend, dropping a good 32%, especially strong when you take into account last Saturday's stage greetings. It earned ¥185,435,200 ($1.90 million) and 150,729 admissions over the weekend. Remaining strong in second place, 'Like Father, Like Son' earned ¥145,940,000 ($1.49 million) and 120,921 admissions in it's fourth week. The film has grossed a very impressive ¥2,380,530,000 ($24.4 million) and over 2 million admissions after 23-days. A ¥3 billion ($30 million+) total, and possibly 3 million admissions, is looking better and better. Debuting in fourth place, 'Human Trust' opened much less than estimates were indicating making a mediocre ¥107,698,800 ($1.11 million) and 89,230 admissions on 260 screens. Too bad because if it earned what estimates had, there was a small shot at reaching ¥1 billion. Now it'll probably only make ¥600 million ($6-7 million). Estimates were quite high on the other openers this weekend, too. 'Diana' managed to beat 'R.I.P.D' by earning ¥48,177,800 ($493,000) and 41,192 admissions on 331 screens, while the latter grossed ¥47,666,800 ($488,000) and 36,688 admissions on 348 screens. Both debuts are very disappointing, though perhaps not completely unexpected.

For it is from our hearts they come, and to our hearts they shall return.” “We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.” “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” “You have to pretend you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.” "Paper is dead without words / Ink idle without a poem / All the world dead without stories."
