Most of the holdovers got slashed heavily. Surprisingly, a few places only cut a couple of movies this week. I'm guessing they want to have a wider selection for the holiday weekend. 3 Idiots is the star holdover with peak showtimes heading into its 5th weekend. September 29 Predictions -- Starting next week, I will not be writing articles on weekend predictions. I'll be gone for a month with only limited internet access during that period.

Re: HK 9/29: Will a typhoon sink Johnny English 2's bid for
"3 Idiots"'s box office performance is just crazy. This just proves that a film with a running time of over 2 hours and with DVDs released for like forever can still pull in audiences if given the right release pattern. Word-of-mouth buzz will take care of the rest.

Re: HK 9/29: Will a typhoon sink Johnny English 2's bid for
This is getting interesting. If the Observatory issues Tropical Cyclone Signal #8 (like a tropical storm warning in the US), many people will just stay home and exchange their tickets for a later date. If the #8 signal happens, buses/trains/minivans are all suspended and fewer taxis are out during a storm. This means the admissions on Thursday will be severely affected and this could spread into Friday as well. I wouldn't put it past Saturday to see increases above 200%.

October Release Dates
Release Date | Movie Title |
October 6 | Real Steel What's Your Number? The Days of Noah 2: Apocalypse Point Blank Osamu Tezuka's Buddha: The Great Departure The 33D Invader Death Bell 2: Bloody Camp |
October 13 | Friends with Benefits The Thing Seeking Justice Mural The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake Love You You The Change-Up Toast |
October 20 | Life Without Principle You are the Apple of My Eye Crazy Stupid Love Fright Night Paranormal Activity 3 |
October 22 | The Lion King (re-release) |
October 27 | In Time Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Dream House The First Grader Warrior Footloose |
October 6 will be Real Steel's week. It's getting the IMAX treatment and should do fairly well, opening with about $600,000. What's Your Number could do over $200,000. The 33D Invader will generate some buzz with its Category III rating so I'm sure it will do better than the other 3 movies. October 13 has a lot of openers and there a lot of possibilities for the #1 spot here including a repeat by Real Steel. Mural could do decent business. Friends with Benefits should debut somewhere in the top 5. After many delays, Mirror Lake finally heads into theaters. The Thing probably won't do much given all the competition from horror/thriller movies. Toast seems like an arthouse movie. October 20 will be the most interesting week, in my opinion. You've got a new Lau Ching Wan movie, which was shown at the Venice Film Festival, a Taiwanese romance hit movie, two horror movies and a Hollywood romance movie. And with The Lion King re-release coming out on that Saturday, it will be a crazy weekend in October. The Lau Ching Wan movie should dominate as Lau Ching Wan is fresh from his Overheard 2 hit and being featured at the Venice Film Festival should score some viewers. Paranormal Activity 3 won't do too much although it will have the upper hand this time against Fright Night unlike last year when it went toe-to-toe with Saw and lost. You are the Apple of My Eye will do fairly well. It could even lead to a 2nd place finish. Crazy Stupid Love might not do well with it competing against Apple of My Eye but it should still put up OK numbers. I have no idea what The Lion King will do. October 27 looks to be In Time's week to shine. Dream House and Afraid of the Dark will be competing against themselves and Paranormal Activity 3 and Fright Night from last week. The First Grader looks like an arthouse flick while Warrior looks to do very little business due to the subject matter. Footloose could be a strong hit ala Step Up. Edit: Typhoon Signal #8 will be issued by 5:30 AM. All transportation services are shut down although taxis will still run depending on the driver. Thursday's box office is looking pretty bleak at this point.

Re: HK 9/29 THU: Typhoon whips up best OD # for JER since HP
Well, I stand corrected. The typhoon brought lots of wind and rain and the best OD numbers for a #1 movie since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. In fact, all of the films saw a huge increase throughout the day into final numbers.
| Thursday adm. | | | September 29 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | Johnny English Reborn | -- | 57,796 | -- |
2 | Shark Night 3D | -- | 11,335 | -- |
3 | The Sorcerer and the White Snake | -- | 9,727 | -- |
4 | 3 Idiots | 3,298 | 8,716 | +164.3% |
5 | Abduction | -- | 4,500 | -- |
Missing: Spy Kids: All the Time in the World Incredible gains for the top 4 from pre-sales to final numbers. Have a look at the Thursday multipliers below. Thursday multipliers 1. Johnny English Reborn - 6.99 2. Shark Night - 5.64 3. The Sorcerer and the White Snake - 7.79 4. 3 Idiots - 7.90 Spectacular number for Johnny English Reborn. Should it continue this track, it is on its way to 1.8-2m OW. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the typhoon accelerated demand or if this gave tourists/people across the city to do something to pass the time. Shark Night opened to fantastic numbers. Lowest that it should do for the weekend is about $250,000. That number could rise to about $400,000 depending on how many students flocked to this. The Sorcerer and the White Snake did quite well. Clearly, the period epic got sampling from curious people who noticed its inclusion into the Venice Film Festival. Combine that with the starpower of Jet Li and Raymond Lam and you've got yourself a relatively good opening day. 3 Idiots continues to shine. That whopping 165% increase looks to have been the work of the typhoon as people treated it as a day off to go and socialize. It's well on its way to another increase possibly finishing with a weekend over $200,000. Solid for Abduction. This is looking at a $110,000 target for the weekend. Spy Kids was not listed. Thursday actuals will give us a better idea of where it's headed this weekend. There's always some movie that doesn't do well on these types of weeks. This time it looks to be 1911. It could debut with less than $100,000 for the weekend which given its ultra wide release would be extremely poor and give Love in Space a run for their money with the worst PSA for an ultra-wide release this year.

For some reason, the website that publishes the Thursday actuals missed some of the top 10 this week including Johnny English Reborn.

With an opening day total close to $300,000, it is heading for a 1.2-1.4m weekend. Target admissions for the holiday Saturday is 75,000. Shark Night is doing great numbers. It could land somewhere in the $300,000-$350,000 range for the weekend. Good number for The Sorcerer and the White Snake. $270,000 could be in store this weekend. Spy Kids isn't listed but it came in at #4 for the day. It should roll out with a $230,000 start. Un-freaking-believable for 3 Idiots. 169% increase in its 5th Thursday. It will pass $850,000 this weekend and be over a 10 multiplier. Geez. $220,000 is possible. 1911 actually turned in an OK performance. It should lead off with $140,000 this weekend. Abduction didn't do half bad either. It should beat Remember Me's OW and crack $100,000 for the weekend. $120,000 could happen. Pretty good for Paradise Kiss. It might see a slight drop this weekend of about -15%. The Help should increase this week. A $60,000 weekend would be tremendous in just 5 theaters. Lan Kwai Fong suffered a major blow this weekend. It could come in with about $55,000 and push it closer to the 1m mark.

Looks like people really used the typhoon as a day off yesterday. Big daily drops all around. Johnny English posted a strong drop. It is already over $500,000 in just 2 days. Shark Night crashed but that is to be expected. It really didn't hold up that well but it is still on course for at least a $300,000 weekend. Incredible for 3 Idiots. There are no words. The Sorcerer and the White Snake did OK and it could overtake Shark Night in admissions on Saturday/Sunday. Abduction dropped hard. It should have held up much better but it will still cross $100,000 for the weekend. Excellent number for Johnny English Reborn. Extremely impressive for 3 Idiots. 5th weekend and it is still growing. Ok for Shark Night but good for The Sorcerer and the White Snake. Atrocious for Abduction. It couldn't even beat its own typhoon-inflated Friday number.

September 29 Weekend Estimates1. Johnny English Reborn - $1,375,000 2. Shark Night - $315,000 3. 3 Idiots - $230,000 ( +42.1%)/$903,600 4. The Sorcerer and the White Snake - $220,000 X. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World - ($150,000-$275,000) 5. 1911 - $85,000 6. Abduction - $85,000 This weekend turned out a bit weaker than I had hoped for. Johnny English led all the way through and did pretty good numbers. Depending on actuals, it may even pass the original in just 1 weekend. Shark Night had a good opening weekend. 3 Idiots came through with another big increase as it will have its first (and maybe last) weekend over $200,000. Still, it will knock on 1m next weekend. The Sorcerer and the White Snake took full advantage of Jet Li and other HK stars and it led to a top 5 finish. A solid performance. We still don't know where Spy Kids will end up. An opening below $150,000 would shock me given the number of theaters, 3D prices and number of chances kids had to see the film (Thurs/Sat/Sun) this weekend. It ended up above 3 Idiots on Thursday and final results could have Spy Kids opening at #3. 1911 bombed. All that's left is to decide if this film or Love in Space gets the title of the smallest opening this year for an ultra wide release. Abduction didn't do well either. It never managed to beat Thursday's admissions. It missed tying Thursday admissions on Saturday by just 4 tickets. It looks like an opening below Remember Me for the werewolf. Records will be updated after this weekend.

Admissions and % chg from Saturday holiday to Wednesday holiday 1. Johnny English Reborn: -11,558 adm. ( -12.4%) 2. 3 Idiots: +626 adm. ( +3.6%) 3. The Sorcerer and the White Snake: -747 adm. ( -6.6%) 4. Shark Night: adm. -2923 adm. ( -24.6%) Really good for Johnny English Reborn. It has already passed 2m in 1 week and should be close to or at 2.1m. Out of this world for 3 Idiots...it increased from the Saturday holiday on Wednesday. That's incredible considering Wednesday night would be affected by people going back to work on Thursday. It has cleared 1m and 1.5m doesn't seem that far fetched. Very good for The Sorcerer and the White Snake. Troubling for Shark Night even with the standard horror frontloadedness. Wednesday Estimates1. Johnny English Reborn - $410,000 2. 3 Idiots - $88,000 3. Shark Night - $70,000 4. The Sorcerer and the White Snake - $65,000 Weekdays/Total Estimates (through 10/5/2011)1. Quite a good drop for Johnny English. Extremely poor for Real Steel. This is playing ultra wide and a number of theaters are giving this two screens at night. Underwhelming performance. Awful for What's Your Number?. That is well below Larry Crowne's start. It might not even make $100,000 this weekend. 3 Idiots continues to chug along. Not bad for Shark Night.

October 6 Weekend Update
Looking really close in admissions between Real Steel and Johnny English. The top 2 haven't been separated by more than 1,300 admissions on any day so far this weekend.
Real Steel will take the weekend by about $50,000-$100,000 in gross. More to come.

Summary Real Steel pulled away from Johnny English Reborn on Sunday. The increases for Real Steel on Saturday/Sunday indicate that this is more of a family film. That's an ok/good drop for Johnny English Reborn. Remember that Johnny English Reborn had 2 holidays to compensate for this big drop and it had the 2nd best drop in the top 10 on Thursday behind 3 Idiots. 3 Idiots continues to shine. A drop under 30% in admissions after 2 holidays is spectacular. What's Your Number? clawed back but still did disappointing numbers. October 6 Weekend Estimates1. Real Steel - $820,000 2. It was tracking behind Friends with Benefits special screenings, which is not listed in this week's chart. You are the Apple of My Eye did pretty good from just 3 theaters. It saw a couple more sellout advanced screenings on the October 6 weekend which should make for a very interesting weekend come October 20. Apollo 18 combusted. Sleeping Beauty did OK. Edit: Tacked on the holiday totals for What's Your Number? and The 33D Invader.

Real Steel is benefiting from very strong word of mouth. I see this dropping less than 35% this weekend. Johnny English is fading fast. The Thing did marginally better than Apollo 18 and Insidious. This might be able to make $200,000 this weekend. Fantastic number for 3 Idiots. I wonder if this will get to 2m? This weekend it could hit $200,000 again. Friends with Benefits has a fair shot at $175,000...maybe $200,000 if it picks up this weekend.

5 | 3 Idiots | 2,709 | 3,191 | +17.8% |
Excellent number for Real Steel. 2m is happening. Johnny English isn't having great legs but it will be enough to pass Overheard 2 for #8. Tenants and X-Men: First Class will be a harder target with it dropping fairly heavily and bigger openers expected next week. The Thing is having a decent start. Friends with Benefits is doing better than What's Your Number. It should amount to about a $150,000 weekend. Every time I make a prediction about 3 Idiots, it seems to bite me in the ass so I'll just say this...it will pass Transformers 3 and become the #1 film of the year. It might be able to sneak in another weekend above $200,000 and it should be around 1.35-1.45m after this weekend.

Real Steel and 3 Idiots are having some great drops. Johnny English will need to pick it up if it wants to succeed 72 Tenants as the 6th biggest film of the year. Very good for Friends with Benefits. The Thing could lead off with $200,000 this weekend. October 6 Weekend 1. Real Steel Walt Disney Int'l $763,937 1 38 $20,104 0 $1,070,0932. Paradise Kiss Intercontinental $18,071 3 9 $2,008 -63 $291,709Totals now include the weekdays from last week.Ok start for Real Steel. Great word of mouth really saw its Sunday benefit. Understandable for Johnny English Reborn. It had 2 holidays to compensate for the bigger weekend drop. Incredibly strong for 3 Idiots after the holiday. Amazing that it only fell 25% after 3 holidays last week (typhoon, 2 public holidays). Poor for 33D Invader and What's Your Number even with advanced shows added in. Shark Night had a pretty successful opening weekend and then it went kaput. The same can be said for Sorcerer and the White Snake, Spy Kids 4D and 1911. Paradise Kiss did well in Hong Kong, better than what a lot of Japanese movies make here. It almost doubled Gantz's total. Life Without Principle and You Are the Apple of My Eye both received widespread advanced screenings this weekend. Apple is doing much more business than Principle and has already had a few weeks of sold out advanced screenings at select locations.

-- | 10 | Demon 2 | -- | $4,475 | -- | 4 | 22 | $4,475 |
Very good for Real Steel. Johnny English Reborn will pass 3m and might pass Overheard 2/Apes this weekend. Passing First Class is a lock and is almost a certainty to pass Tenants. Good number for The Thing. Ok for Friends with Benefits. 3 Idiots continues to dominate at the two theater chains. Extremely weak for 33D Invader. The bottom 3 openers did really bad. I'm skeptical of Demon 2 being #10 because I don't see it playing at any theaters but that's what is listed.

Re: HK 10/29 SAT: Apple of my Eye watch
"Apple of My Eye" 's bo performance is even more impressive than 3 Idiots and Sex and Zen earlier this year. To see the Taiwan indie beat the crap out of In Time and PA 3 is a real pleasant surprise. The coming-of-age movie has a good shot at topping Pirates 3 to become the third highest grossing movie of the year.

The coming-of-age movie has a good shot at topping Pirates 3 to become the third highest grossing movie of the year. I disagree. I think 3 Idiots' performance is way more impressive than Apple of My Eye's for the sole reason that this was released 2 years after the initial release date worldwide. Add in all the other factors (no other Indian movie comes close, only played at 2/5 theater chains, foreign language, over a 10 multiplier) and I don't think Apple of My Eye comes close. IMO, Apple of My Eye is banking on the hot WOM from Taiwan and the love story plot. We already saw glimpses of good box office return from other love story hits such as Beastly and Don't Go Breaking My Heart earlier this year. It was only a matter of time before a love story movie would break out. Thursday update: You Are the Apple of My Eye is going to stay on top for a 4th week making it the longest #1 since Inception last year. If it spends another week at #1, it will be the most since Avatar in 2009 and only the 2nd movie to stay at #1 for more than a month since BOM started tracking HK box office back in 2001. Box office wise, it has already cruised past 5.5m and should end with 7.5m total which would make it only the first fall film since Lust, Caution to end in the top 5 of the year. #2-4 is looking like it's up for grabs with Three Musketeers, 3 Idiots and In Time all battling it out. I Don't Know How She Does It isn't doing well. Similar thing with Drive although that is rated III. 3 Idiots will pass 2m this weekend and has already passed films like Green Lantern, Tangled, Green Hornet and other WOM hits like Confessions, Departures and Aftershock.

Look ahead: Immortals will lead the pack next week with 8 new releases out. 5 new Hollywood releases ( Immortals, 50/50, Margin Call, Killer Elite, Trespass) along with Taiwan epic Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (Part 1) and local/mainland films The Big Blue Lake and Legendary Amazons come out. You Are the Apple of My Eye will have a tough time repeating with Immortals showing in 3D but it still has a fair chance of doing so. Tintin pre-selling has started in IMAX. It's been doing ok so far. Early predictions look like this start off with a 1m weekend.

Very surprising that Pacific Place has already dropped Apple of My Eye after 4 weeks. I don't think it's a full drop though. They will probably schedule a few showtimes of it on the weekend. Immortals is looking more and more likely to be the #1 film this week. Apple of My Eye so far has had mixed results with scheduling with a handful of theaters still giving it 2 screens at night, most giving it 1 screen (full day) while another handful has dropped this or has only left it with 1 showtime. Margin Call is the other very wide release this week with it being added in many places. 50/50 is only going limited while Seediq Bale Part 1 may be in about 10 or so theaters. Trespass and Killer Elite are fillers. Fresh off her bomb, Treasure Hunt, Cecilia Cheung is back in a new movie called Legendary Amazons. Theaters have shunned this so returns are expected to be very weak.

Good start for Immortals. Pretty good for Apple of My Eye although it is slowing down now. Weak for Margin Call. Decent enough run for In Time. 3 Idiots is a beast. It has already spent 7 weekends in the top 5 tying Sex & Zen for most weeks spent inside the top 5 this year and will break the record with another top 5 finish this weekend. Seediq Bale starts off well. With the 2nd one set to play in 2 weeks, this should do fairly well with its niche audience. Good number for Starry Starry Night. It might be able to drop less than 50% this weekend. Trespass did substandard numbers. Likewise for Killer Elite. While 50/50's subject matter isn't appealing, it managed strong sales in the arthouse theaters which is boosting its PSA. An exceptional start nonetheless. It is going to be very close between Real Steel and the other movies bunched up below 2.5m. Nice total for the robot boxing movie. Great number for Life Without Principle. OK-below average for 3 Musketeers. Tower Heist did acceptable numbers. Extremely good for Drive...and we're only into week 2 of its run. Considering that it got slapped with a III rating, this number is a great leading off point.

Good numbers for Apple of My Eye and Immortals. Nice recovery for Immortals as well after the mild Friday. Margin Call isn't doing great while 3 Idiots is looking very good still. 3 Idiots will spend another weekend over 100k, its 10th consecutive weekend that it has done so. In Time is holding on pretty well. It'll hang around with a 40-50% drop for the weekend.

Couple of squeakers with admissions. Immortals dethrones Apple after it reigned for 4 weeks. Apple put up a valiant fight but could not catch Immortals. 3 Idiots manages to tip over Margin Call with its very strong Sunday. Margin Call really paled in admissions to the 2nd Wall Street (though that did benefit with a holiday), making just 39.1% that Wall Street 2 opened with last September. In Time is benefiting from no 2D screens of Immortals and lack of sci-fi action competition. November 17 Estimates1. Immortals - $505,0002. You Are the Apple of My Eye - $381,581 ( -57.0%)/ $7,095,3513. Margin Call - $175,0004. 3 Idiots - $125,000 ( -8.9%)/ $2,297,7585. In Time - $120,000 ( -48.0%)/ $1,525,126Ok start for Immortals. I would have liked to see a bigger number from it but it could have been a lot worse. Apple of My Eye is stumbling a bit but it has already outgrossed everyone's predictions by a lot. It should end up with about 7.4-7.5m. Margin Call is the big loser this weekend. The Wall Street premise didn't convince those same people who watched WS2 to come back as most ended up skipping the film. 3 Idiots continues its record-breaking run. If it doesn't pass The Smurfs this weekend, it will do so by next week. Absolutely insane and the fact that it's closing in on the group bunched together below 2.5m says something about its amazing staying power. In Time had a nice hold once again. It'll probably lose most of its showtimes to Tintin next weekend but so far it's been doing quite well here. Next weekend: Tintin and his secret unicorn adventures.

Tintin disappointed big time. I'm not ready to call it a bomb just yet as it is only beginning its run but I'm sure Sony did not have this number in mind when they scheduled it this week. They thought this was a huge contender for the winter crown and the other distributors feared the worst as they dumped fluff movies or didn't bother trying to mute its gross with other high profile pics. Last week, we saw filler movies like Killer Elite, Trespass, Margin Call out and this week, it was a similar story with A Little Bit of Heaven, East Meets West 2011, Jump Ashin! and others all being released. This year has been the story of great WOM movies with many movies turning in better legs than the norm. This week alone, we see You Are the Apple of My Eye, 3 Idiots, Seediq Bale 1, 50/50 and In Time to a lesser extent having good-great drops. It stands to reason that movies with great WOM are gripping the city and that unless you have something appealing, you aren't going to make a ton of money. Massive disappointment for Tintin and next week it goes up against Arthur Christmas. You Are the Apple of My Eye is still doing fine. It is starting to slow down now but before it is all said and done, it will have passed the 7.5m barrier. Congrats to Immortals for going from decent opening weekend to disappointment in its 2nd weekend. Terrible week-to-week drop. Bad for East Meets West 2011. Eason will try again next week with Strawberry Cliff. 3 Idiots still holding on. Very good for Seediq Bale 1. I guess some theaters will try and do a double feature with Seediq Bale 1+2 next week. It's possible that people are waiting for both to come out to just watch it all at once. Maybe an increase for Seediq Bale 1 is in the cards? A Little Bit of Heaven did meh numbers. In Time is doing well. I am a bit surprised it hasn't fallen below 50% yet. Margin Call crashed. 50/50 posted a solid hold. Rest of the top 10 active grosses

Tintin's opening weekend admissions: 68,991 Thursday - 8,689 Friday - 12,373 Saturday - 21,460 Sunday - 24,781 Summary The Adventures of Tintin disappointed big but it rebounded slightly on the weekend. The Cantonese version showed considerable strength on Saturday/Sunday and surpassed Apple on Sunday as evidenced by its 22% Sunday jump. It doesn't minimize the poor opening weekend for Tintin though as it was expected to gross more than Immortals OW. After actuals come in, HK will be Asia's 2nd lowest grossing market for Tintin with Philippines and South Korea still to come. Good for Apple of My Eye. It has passed 7.3m and it will crawl past 7.5m with no real big movies coming out the next 2 weeks. Immortals had a horrible drop for a 3D film but this was pretty much expected with mixed WOM and poor ticket sales. 3 Idiots continues to impress and it will spend another weekend over $100,000. Huge misfire for Sony/Paramount. Hindsight is 20/20 but they had a prime slot with the Christmas week opening and moving Tintin from there to end of November 24 was a magnificent blunder. November 24 Weekend Estimates1. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn - $391,000 2. You Are the Apple of My Eye - $207,500 ( -42%)/$7,397,220 3. Immortals - $190,000 ( -62%)/$848,000 4. Obviously the big weeks are the two weeks sandwiched in the middle. December 1 will be a fairly light week with Arthur Christmas presumably winning it. Warriors of the Rainbow Part 2 (and Part 1) will do fairly well now that Seediq Bale has took home some Golden Horse awards including Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Original Score and Audience Choice. December 8 is the calm before the storm with nothing really noteworthy coming out. December 15 is the big weekend with Sherlock Holmes and Mission Impossible fighting it out. Right now, I would say Sherlock Holmes has the slight edge given Robert Downey Jr's bigger starpower from recent movies. Still, Tom Cruise is a huge draw here. The last MI film opened to over $2m in 2006 and Knight & Day opened to over $750,000 last summer. Those did not have formidable competition like Sherlock Holmes however. Sherlock Holmes opened to a hair below 1m 2 years ago on Christmas week...but that faced an unstoppable Avatar in its 2nd weekend. This time, it won't be the underdog. This weekend will rival that of the April 29, 2010 weekend when Ip Man 2 faced off against Iron Man 2 in the battle of the "Man" sequels. I predict that both movies will make a combined total of about 3.5m with Sherlock Holmes squeezing out the victory. December 22 will be the other big week where all 4 openers are expected to contend for a place in the top 5. Breaking Dawn Part 1 will be the one with the best chance of leading the openers. It has steadily grown in OW with Eclipse opening to over $800,000 but its total has been pretty stagnant around the 2m mark. Alvin & The Chipmunks and Happy Feet 2 will march towards the last spot in the top 5. We cannot forget the new Jet Li movie coming out. That is a question mark at this point but it should do fairly well with no wuxia movies out since the summer. This weekend will probably break the 5m mark again with Sherlock Holmes and Mission Impossible holding well. We could see 6 movies gross more than $500,000 this weekend. December 29 is not looking too bad with Turning Point 2 expected to win and War Horse to challenge. Speed Angels won't fare well and We Bought A Zoo should do OK numbers but is not gunning for #1.

Tintin fares a bit better but this OW is still below average. Industry watchers expected more from Tintin here. Apple of My Eye will pass 7.5m this upcoming weekend. Immortals jumped off a cliff. 3 Idiots has done extremely well and will pass 2.5m on its way to a possible 3m end. In Time is performing admirably. That is pretty poor for East Meets West although I think both BOM and Variety are not including Newport into their results. A Little Bit of Heaven didn't do good or bad. Starry Starry Night will pass $500,000 before its run is over and Seediq Bale 1 is doing well and might see another increase with Part 2 out this weekend and after its Golden Horse wins for Best Picture, Supporting Actor and Film Score.

Apple of My Eye is looking to scrape by with another week in the top 3. Tintin looked ok for Thursday but the gain in admissions for the day is worrisome. Strong for Seediq Bale 2. 3 Idiots is still holding on in the top 5. Upcoming vs. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol are both going to air special screenings across Hong Kong with night shows starting on December 14. Sherlock Holmes will start showing at 7 PM while Mission Impossible 4 looks to be leading off at 10 PM. Advanced ticketing for both movies has been released and so far Sherlock Holmes 2 is outdoing Mission Impossible 4 in regular theaters after day 1. Mission Impossible 4, however, has the IMAX advantage and this is doing huge business with IMAX theaters already 15-40% filled with select primetime shows. Mission Impossible has also received the biggest screens over Sherlock Holmes. I guess theater owners are expecting MI4 to outgross SH2 but I think it will be a lot closer than they think. Breaking Dawn Part 1: Why the Twilight series never pays off at ChristmasIf you've ever payed attention to the international release dates for the Twilight series, you may have noticed one oddity about it. Every winter Twilight release has seen a release close to Christmas in Hong Kong. It's a strategic move that Summit/Golden Scene (HK distributor) considers to be safe and most reliable. I mean what movie could go wrong with a release around Christmas? If there was ever a movie wrong for Christmas though, it would be the Twilight series. Let's recap. 1. None of the Twilight movies has ever spent a week at #1.In the 3 previous installments, all 3 of them debuted at #2 and fell off soon after. This brings me to my next point... 2. Holiday release date means more competition. More competition means less chance of getting big bucks and the coveted ranking. All 3 previous Twilight movies got their start on a holiday weekend or the weekend before a holiday. The first Twilight movie opened alongside Ip Man and Madagascar 2 and then faced Suspect X on Christmas. New Moon went up against Avatar and that was that. Eclipse battled Shrek 4 and lost. Breaking Dawn Part 1 is not only challenged by Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, A&C3, HF2 its opening weekend but it will also have to contend with the 2nd weekends of heavy-hitters Sherlock Holmes 2 & Mission Impossible 4. (As we have seen in past Christmases, movies released the weekend before Christmas will see a 2nd weekend increase.) Had the 3 Twilight films moved around from their scheduled weekends, I'm sure they would have done more business and ranked #1. 3. Late release date means potentially less revenue. We've all heard about the piracy in China. What is stopping people from downloading it when the movie is already out 1 month elsewhere before it comes to Hong Kong? We've already seen what happens when you release a movie later in some parts of the world. Your total decreases from the predecessor. (New Moon dived below 2m after going head-to-head with Avatar.) With Breaking Dawn facing some tough opponents, odds are this release will go back down below 2m. 4. Christmas and romance dramas don't mix.I'm sorry but whoever thought Christmas and vampires/werewolves is a good idea is sorely mistaken. People want to see action or kids movies not romance drama movies. While Twilight opened bigger than Madagascar 2, in the end, Madagascar 2 finished ahead of Twilight in total gross. It also lost to Ip Man OW, one of the breakout hits that holiday season. The other 2 were handily beaten by other openers the same week. 5. The Twilight series has gotten bigger OWs with each release. It may not have gotten more frontloaded with each release but its OW is still something to note. It went from $490k -> $769k -> $815k (summer). Unfortunately, BD1 still has a lot of competition on its plate and I'm unsure if BD1 is going to rise in OW again especially if we see great holds from SH2 and MI4. With the OW becoming more crucial for Twilight, why release it with a host of other films expected to generate fairly good to amazing business? Breaking Dawn Part 1 is one movie where they could have learnt from past mistakes. Instead, they just opt for the safe and predictable play. The most ideal release date would have been December 1. It would have opened 2 weeks after the US and be free from any major releases. If they were that scared of Tintin, December 1 would have been a good choice especially with it 2 weeks away from the SH2/MI4 duo and some demand for Tintin already gone. What does this mean for Breaking Dawn Part 2? Who knows, although most likely they will schedule this the week before Christmas and then it will share its release date with The Hobbit. Book it. 3 Idiots: End date coming soon? It's been pretty incredible watching 3 Idiots run since September 1. No one could have imagined such a historical run with it capturing over 2.5m and possibly toying with 3m. That being said, the magical run will end soon but when will this happen? December 1 is already looking pretty good with a Thursday admissions increase but the weekend might see another small dip. December 8 is looking bare so 3 Idiots will continue to play strongly up until the December 15 weekend. This will be very key for 3 Idiots. If it can escape with a 55-60% drop that weekend (in line with other great WOM movies' drops), that should be enough to get theater owners to keep it for Christmas week. Holiday + long movie means big increase. If it can survive that Dec. 15 weekend, we could be looking at another weekend over $100,000...possibly pushing $150,000 even with so many other movies coming out. December 29 should still be pretty good for 3 Idiots but unfortunately that is where I think it's run will end. My Name is Khan is opening first weekend of January and we have seen from theaters before with other foreign language releases that if a newer movie is opening, they will cut the previous movie to make room for it. Edit: Actuals have come out.
