Amazing. This is similar to how Rocky IV opened in Japan. I would love to have more information on that.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Evangelion 3.0 Updates
11/03-04 Weekend Estimates
1 (-) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) ¥400 million ($5 million), 0, NEW 2 (1) Smile Pretty Cure! The Movie: Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥145 million ($1.8 million), -24%, Week 2 3 (-) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) ¥122 million ($1.5 million), 0, NEW 4 (-) Fly With The Gold (Shochiku) ¥101 million ($1.3 million ), 0, NEW 5 (-) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) ¥73 million ($910,000), 0, NEW 6 (3) Connection (Toho) ¥52 million ($650,000), -48%, Week 5 7 (-) Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) ¥50 million ($620,000), 0, NEW 8 (4) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥43 million ($540,000), -54%, Week 9 9 (6) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) ¥42 million ($520,000), -33%, Week 5 10 (5) 009 RE: Cyborg (T-Joy) ¥33 million ($410,000), -52%, Week 2
Very impressive for 'The Floating Castle'. Since it opened on Friday, it's 3-day total may have exceeded ¥500 million ($6 million+ ). ¥2.5 billion ($30 million+) should be attainable, and perhaps ¥3 billion (near $40 million) is doable, too. Strong film to kick off the last month of the Box Office year that will continue with 'Lesson of the Evil' next weekend, 'Evangelion 3.0' in two weeks, and 'Crow's Thumb' at the end of the month.
Among the other openers, 'Fly with the Gold' did very well. Shochiku needed this one to over-perform.
Some rough drops for this weekend for most holdovers. Seven wide openers would have cut into the showtimes, though, and there wasn't any data for 'The Expendables 2'. It would have required a drop over 60% to fall out of the Top 10... but seeing there are a couple 50%+ drops this weekend maybe it actually did plummet, though I suspect it'll show up in the morning.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Evangelion 3.0 Updates
What do you think Evangelion 3.0 will open to? And is there any chance they'll expand beyond the 220 theaters? Seems like there'd still be a lot of untapped potential with that relatively low theater count, even if it is a fairly substantial increase from the previous entries.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Evangelion 3.0 Updates
I think it tops ¥900 million ($11/12 million) and becomes the biggest opener of the year topping 'Umizaru 4' (¥878 million) and 'Bayside Shakedown 4' (¥804 million).
I'm not predicting a ¥1 billion ($13 million) opening yet, though. As far as non-Miyazaki animated films go, it's only happened once before when 'One Piece Film Strong World' (¥1.038 billion) did it 3 years ago in less theaters than 'Evangelion 3.0' is opening in. That includes all Hollywood animated films, too.
The significant theater count increase is only somewhat important, and it's still an alright count for a local film (very few reach 350/400 theaters), the more important thing is that it's being released in all 47 prefectures in Japan this time. That gives it a lot more potential. The last film was released in 38 prefectures, leaving people in 9 other prefectures possibly having no way to see the film unless they traveled long distances.

DAMN! It dropped out of the Top 10. Hope it shows up somewhere, otherwise Japan is acting just like orea in that it's only on the charts for 3 weeks then gone. Thanks for giving me a heads up, Corpse

It hasn't appeared on any of the Cinema Chain rankings for the weekend yet, so it's not looking too good for it right now.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Evangelion 3.0 Updates
11/03-04 Weekend Ranking 1 (-) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) NEW 2 (-) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) NEW3 (1) Smile Pretty Cure: Big Mismatch in a Picture Book (TOEI) Week 2 4 (-) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) NEW 5 (-) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) NEW 6 (-) Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) NEW7 (2) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) Week 3 8 (3) Connection (Toho) Week 5 9 (4) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 9 10 (7) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) Week 5 'The Floating Castle' opened to a very impressive ¥504,901,150 ($6.4 million) on 409,352 admissions since opening on Friday on 328 screens. The weekend figure itself hasn't been released yet, but should be around ¥400 million ($5 million), probably enough to earn a Top 15 Opening Weekend for the year. This is the biggest opening since 'Resident Evil 5' back in September. Toho is projecting the film will reach ¥4 billion ($50 million), but they're just hyping the opening as usual and it's far more likely to settle with around ¥3 billion ($40 million), which is still a very good result. 'Chorus of Angels' (might be romanized as something different) did much better than early estimates were projecting. Playing on 330 screens, the film opened to ¥180,391,800 ($2.3 million) on 164,924 admissions over the weekend. That should be good enough to achieve the ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) milestone. 'Fly with the Gold' opened on 191 screens with ¥100,984,200 ($1.3 million) on 75,120 admissions for the weekend. A solid opening, and much needed for distributor Shochiku. In fifth was 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter'. Fox released the film on 405 screens which brought in ¥99,390,800 ($1.3 million) on 66,343 admissions over the weekend. Not a great debut, but it could have been worse. And since opening on Thursday, it's grossed ¥170,011,300 ($2.2 million) on 123,059 admissions. And lastly was 'Paranormal Activity 4'. Playing on 156 screens, it earned ¥60,655,700 ($760,000 ) on 48,553 admissions for the weekend. That's a slight improvement over it's predecessor, and it's grossed ¥91,870,300 ($1.2 million) on 77,317 admissions since opening on Thursday as well (Local Holiday).

Re: Japan Box Office: Wknd Ranking / Cont. Evangelion 3.0 Up
And outside the Top 10, 'The Intouchables' became the most attended french film in history topping 'Amelie's 1,038,763 admissions after 65 days in release.
Since opening on 9/1, the film has grossed ¥1,302,465,000 ($16.4 million) on 1,063,785 admissions (multiplier up to 16.7x). And to become the highest grossing french film in history, it still needs to beat 'Amelie's ¥1.60 billion total. In my opinion, 'The Intouchables' is the most impressive imported release (including Hollywood releases) this year.

No weekend figures or actuals, but it exceeded ¥600 million ($7.5 million) after 16 days. It'll finish with about ¥800 million ($10 million) like the first one. That's below the commercial success mark, but at least it retained it's audience I suppose.

Corpse wrote: No weekend figures or actuals, but it exceeded ¥600 million ($7.5 million) after 16 days. It'll finish with about ¥800 million ($10 million) like the first one. That's below the commercial success mark, but at least it retained it's audience I suppose. Ok, thanks. Pretty weird that one movie in the Top 10 doesn't get any numbers. I suppose this is the last week to expect to see it on the chart.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' is taking awhile to reach 'Thermae Romae', but it should surpass it by the end of the end of the month and exceed ¥6 billion.
'Resident Evil: Retribution' had a great week before Saturday. It collapsed putting ¥4 billion ($50 million) possibly out of reach. It's performed very well regardless whether it reaches that goal or not, but it definitely could have made if it didn't lose so many screens this weekend.

'The Floating Castle' barely misses a Top 15 Opening Weekend, but still a great debut. And the first film to debut on the charts in over a month. We'll see many films open well this month, though.

Re: Japan Box Office: Chart Update / Cont. Evangelion 3.0 Up
I'm guessing part of the build-up in buzz to this third one is that it's the first entry that won't just be a condensed re-tread of the material in the original series but will present a new storyline?

Re: Japan Box Office: Chart Update / Cont. Evangelion 3.0 Up
Yeah, that's playing a big part in this I believe. Also remember though that the last film sold out over half (57%) of it's showtimes all weekend. It just played in about half as many theaters and in 9 fewer prefectures that the new film is opening in.
I also think it's just the immense popularity of the franchise and the previous Rebuild entries, too. Evangelion 2.0's DVD release hit 800,000 pre-orders which shattered the previous pre-order record and nothing has come remotely close to even half that figure since. The biggest blockbusters like Avatar or big fanbase franchises like One Piece barely do 200/300,000 usually.
I really don't want to predict an opening weekend over 1 billion yen, but it's honestly looking pretty good. Can you imagine what the final film is going to do in 2/3 years? If 3.0 is well-received, 4.0 could potentially be the most hyped film of all time.

IF 'Evangelion 3.0' (224 screens for comparison below) would open to 1 billion yen, it would become only the 9th local film to open above the mark:
Biggest Local-Opening Weekends (2-Day; ¥1 billion+)
1. Howl's Moving Castle (Toho) ¥1,483,804,112 / 1,204,980 admissions (448 screens) 2. Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (Toho) - ¥1,263,735,608 / 930,586 admissions (408 screens) 3. Rookies (Toho) - ¥1,225,279,099 / 987,387 admissions (428 screens) 4. One Piece Film Strong World (TOEI) - ¥1,038,445,263 / 819,738 admissions (188 screens) 5. Ponyo (Toho) - ¥1,034,459,534 / 812,557 admissions (481 screens) 6. Hero (Toho) - ¥1,013,719,284 / 749,807 admissions (475 screens) 7. Spirited Away (Toho) - ¥1,009,000,000 / 810,000 admissions (318 screens) 8. Boys Over Flowers THE FINAL (Toho) - ¥1,005,428,333 / 805,350 admissions (400 screens)

BOM is still a tiny bit high (58m weekend/604m total), but close enough.
