Aside from Studio Ghibli releases, TV Drama adaptations are the biggest local films in Japan.

*No third week data available to include it in the first two lists.

It's interesting that 'Umizaru: Brave Hearts' and 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' have had weaker weekends than their competition but their weekday grosses have allowed them to remain on par in total gross. And boy can you begin to see how the exchange rate changes things. There's $10 million, $20 million+ differences in the USD totals despite most of the films grossing about the same.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Charts Updated
Sept. 29-30
Weekend Forecast

1 (1) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) ¥325-350 million ($4-4.5 million) Week 3
1 (2) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥325-350 million ($4-4.5 million) Week 4
3 (-) The Bourne Legacy (Toho-Towa) ¥250 million ($3.2 million) NEW
4 (-) The Hunger Games (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥120 million ($1.5 million) NEW

5 (4) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) ¥75 million ($1 million) Week 6
6 (6) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥70 million ($900,000) Week 5
7 (5) Insight into the Universe (Shochiku) ¥65 million ($825,000) Week 3
8 (3) Tiger & Bunny The Movie (T-Joy/Shochiku) ¥50 million ($650,000) Week 2
9 (7) Key of Life (Klockworx) ¥45 million ($575,000) Week 3
10 (8) Dearest (Toho) ¥40 million ($525,000) Week 6

It's tough to pick which film will top the weekend. 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' will win it's fourth-consecutive weekend in admissions, but 'Resident Evil 5' has been edging it out in gross the past couple weekends.

'The Bourne Legacy' probably won't match it's predecessor's openings, but should still get off to a solid start. 'The Hunger Games' will struggle out of the gate due to it's distributor and mixed reviews.

I'm not sure if 'The Intouchables' is adding any screens this weekend, but if it does, it'll likely make the Top 5.

'Hotel Transylvania' also opens this weekend, but will miss the Top 10.

Projected Totals after Sunday (¥1 billion+)

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' ~¥4.5 billion ($58 million) after 24 days.
'Resident Evil 5' ~¥3 billion ($38 million) after 17 days.
'Rurouni Kenshin' ~¥2.8 billion ($36 million) after 37 days.
'Dearest' ~¥2.1 billion ($27 million) after 37 days.

Do you think The Intouchables can reach $20 million?

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Forecast (9/29-30)
It's certainly doable, but it's really difficult to gauge audience favorites like this which can see runs last for 4-6 month periods without losing any screens. I'd predict high-teens ($17-19) right now, though. Whatever it does end up grossing, it'll gross by never playing on more than 100 screens (currently playing on 77).

It seems like the audiences are responding extremely well to it in Japan as well.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Forecast (9/29-30)
Definitely.

8 (-) Intouchables (Fr) Gaga NEW 1,009,236 48 21,025 - 1,009,236
9 (8) Intouchables (Fr) Gaga 2 878,788 49 17,934 -13% 3,163,607
9 (9) Intouchables (Fr) Gaga 3 799,096 52 15,367 -9% 5,110,684
6 (9) Intouchables (Fr) Gaga 4 969,463 77 12,590 +17% 7,319,037

It's pretty much been flat since opening weekend when it sold out 67% of it's showings. So it's definitely been selling out 50% or more of it's showings (weekdays included with it's 50:50 ratio) ever since.

And the fact it's adding screens is incredible. Since Japan sees so many movies released every weekend (more than NA and only second to India) you very rarely see any film ever gain screens.

Bah, it looks like Hunger Games won't be able to gross the 15M it needs to reach 700M.

Sept. 29-30
Weekend Ranking

1 (1) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 4
2 (2) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) Week 3
3 (-) The Bourne Legacy (Toho-Towa) NEW
4 (-) The Hunger Games (Kadokawa Pictures) NEW

5 (3) Insight into the Universe (Shochiku) Week 3
6 (4) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) Week 6
7 (6) The Intouchables (Gaga) Week 5
8 (8) Key of Life (Klockworx) Week 3
9 (7) Dearest (Toho) Week 6
10 (5) Tiger & Bunny The Movie (T-Joy) Week 2

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' claims it's fourth-consecutive week on top in admissions, and also overtakes 'Resident Evil: Retribution' in gross as well for the weekend. After four weeks, the film has exceeded 3 million admissions and ¥4 billion ($51 million). This figure is pretty vague because the total is actually closer to 3.3/3.4 million admissions and ¥4.4/4.5 billion ($55 million+).

'The Bourne Legacy' grossed ¥172,846,800 ($2.2 million) on 138,643 admissions over the weekend on 501 screens, bringing it's 3-day total to ¥231,203,000 ($2.9 million) on 188,618 admissions. This is a significant drop from the previous 'Bourne' films, but should still be enough for the film to reach the ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) milestone.

'The Hunger Games' grossed ¥94,514,000 ($1.2 million) on 71,870 admissions over the weekend on 565 screens, bringing it's 3-day total to ¥122,400,500 ($1.6 million) on 94,872 admissions. A mostly disappointing debut, but with the mixed reviews and the 'Battle Royale' "rip-off" claims being strong here, it's not too bad.

And just missing the Top 10 was 'Hotel Transylvania' debuting in 11th.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' moves over 'Wolf Children' and becomes the #4 film of 2012. It has slowed down a bit, however, and it'll take a couple weeks to surpass 'MI4'.

'Resident Evil 5' fifth biggest Hollywood film of 2012 after just 17 days.

'Dearest' exceeds ¥2 billion and enters the Top 20. A very strong performance that's been a bit overshadowed by late Summer and Early Fall's blockbusters. It could end up with a multiplier of 10.

10 (-) The Lorax (Toho-Towa) NEW

Really crowded weekend and I don't have time to include any weekend predictions besides the rankings above. 'Outrage 2' has a good chance of dethroning 'Bayside Shakedown 4'; 'Madoka Magica' will have a huge psa and likely win the animated-film battle against 'The Mystical Laws' and 'The Lorax'; 'The Intouchables' will probably be knocked out of the Top 10 with so many openers, but don't be surprised if it hangs on at #9/#10 come Sunday.

Why does The Intouchables not go wider? The same distributor has Mirror Mirror in way more theatres, even though it is doing worse!

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Charts Updated
I don't recall any film in limited release ever going wide since I've been tracking the Japan Box Office.

'The Intouchables' has been adding more screens and showtimes since it opened, though, and this is very rare in the market.

It's mostly due to the volume of films that are in release and being released each weekend. In addition to the 6 openers I'm including in the Top 10 this weekend, there are 17 more openers. The majority are limited releases, but they combine for many screens. For the month of October, there are 76 releases. The market has been seeing ~800 films released for the past 6 years now, second only to India.

Weekend Forecast

1 (1) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) Week 2
2 (2) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 6
3 (3) Connection (Toho) Week 2
4 (-) Madoka Magica 2 (Aniplex) NEW
5 (-) The Raven (Disney) NEW

6 (4) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) Week 5
7 (5) The Mystical Law (Nikkatsu) Week 2
8 (6) The Lorax (Toho-Towa) Week 2
9 (-) Bakaleya High School (Showgate) NEW
10 (8) The Bourne Legacy (Toho-Towa) Week 3

I'm very busy this month so I can't provide any accurate weekend predictions as far as grosses go, but here is how the weekend should play out.

I doubt the Top 3 will change from last weekend.

'Madoka Magica' just had a film open in 7th last weekend, but it was the prequel leading to this weekend's film. The sequel will probably open about the same if not slightly higher, while it's prequel will struggle to have a second week in the Top 10 (not expecting it, too, actually).

'The Raven' opens today (Friday) so it's weekend will be a bit deflated but should manage a Top 5 debut regardless.

"Bakaleya's opening will depend on the fanboys/girls of AKB48 and Johnny's turnout this weekend. It has some potential to open higher, but also could open lower considering it's purely a fanbase driven film.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' becomes the fourth film this year to exceed 5 billion yen and 4 million admissions.

'Resident Evil: Retribution' climbs 2 spots and enters the Top 10. It's gross is now comfortably ahead of it's US total, too.

'The Intouchables' hits 1 billion yen after 7 weeks in release. Quite the outstanding accomplishment.

How many French or (non-English) European movies have crossed the 1b mark?

The last French movie I believe was Amelie in 2002. Not sure on all European movies without checking, but I'll get back to you soon.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Charts Updated
Oct. 20-21
Weekend Estimates

1 (-) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) ¥183 million ($2.3 million), 0, NEW
2 (2) Connection (Toho) ¥112 million ($1.4 million), -20%, Week 3
3 (4) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥87 million ($1.1 million), -32%, Week 7
4 (3) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) ¥84 million ($1 million), -41%, Week 3
5 (6) The Lorax (Toho-Towa) ¥69 million ($875,000), -31%, Week 3
6 (7) The Mystical Laws (Nikkatsu) ¥61 million ($775,000), -29%, Week 3
7 (-) Space Sheriff Gaven (TOEI) ¥59 million ($750,000), 0, NEW
8 (5) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) ¥55 million ($700,000), -45%, Week 6
9 (1) Madoka Magica 2 (Aniplex) ¥51 million ($650,000), -70%, Week 2
10 (8) The Raven (Disney) ¥37 million ($475,000), -52%, Week 2

'The Expendables 2' pulls off a first place debut, though it's the second weakest film to top a weekend this year (first being 'Madoka Magica 2' opening on top last weekend with ¥172 million). For the weekend frame, it's about a 5% increase over 'The Expendables' not including it's take from opening on Friday. I expect the 3-day total is around ¥225 million ($2.8 million).

'Space Sheriff Gaven' disappoints. TOEI didn't give it as wide of a release as they usually do (about 100 less screens actually) which probably explains a lot of it.

October is usually the weakest month of the year in Japan, though this one has been especially weak. The strength of September ('Bayside' and 'Resident Evil') offsets the weakness of this month though, and November has some big films coming up, one that may do ¥5 billion ($60 million) in 'Evangelion 3.0'.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Biggest Film Franchises
Biggest Movie Franchises in Japan (¥25 billion+):

Film :: Revenue [Film Entries]
1. Harry Potter :: ¥96.57 billion [8]
2. Pokemon :: ¥68.48 billion [15]
3. Doraemon :: ¥67.74 billion [32]
4. Detective Conan :: ¥41.34 billion [16]
5. Bayside Shakedown :: ¥40.18 billion [4]
6. Star Wars :: ¥40.04 billion [6]
7. Pirates of the Caribbean :: ¥36.59 billion [4]
8. Jurassic Park :: ¥27.48 billion [3]
9. The Lord of the Rings :: ¥27.29 billion [3]
10. The Matrix :: ¥26.40 billion [3]

As of Sunday, 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' puts the franchise over ¥40 billion and above 'Star Wars'. I'm not sure if it has another ¥1 billion+ left in it, so it may not catch 'Detective Conan'.

The Umizaru franchise looks to just miss reaching ¥25 billion this year with it's fourth entry.

*Note that for the USD Chart, there are some films that would make the chart despite not grossing ¥5 billion due to a favorable exchange rate.

The three live-action local films above happen to be the Top 3 highest grossing films this year, also (Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL passed Mission Impossible IV this past weekend).

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' surpasses 'Mission Impossible IV' and becomes the #3 film of 2012. #1 is well out of reach for it now, though it could still reach #2.

'Resident Evil: Retribution' jumps 3 more spots, but it won't be moving any higher up. I think it still has a 50/50 chance at ¥4 billion ($51 million), though. And Japan is it's biggest overall market this time after coming very close in 2010.

'The Intouchables' enters the Top 50 after 8 weeks in release.

A few Official Estimates (OE) were released this past week and have been updated in the charts.
