Poseidon is up to a score of 10 on Yahoo's Buzz Chart. I don't think we're looking at another Stealth or The Island, but more of a major domestic underperformer.

Who knows about the opening, but this baby's gonna have long legs!
It's a real movie. For that reason it's that's gonna benefit from WOM, to carry it past pretenders like M:i:3 and DVC...

There's just a lot of people who don't like Tom Cruise now, so if you are one of them, the only option to see a major summer movie this weekend is Poseidon. It might not have any big draws but it doesn't have any big repulses either.
Tom Cruise's star power has dimmed in the eyes of the public, especially women, Reuters reports, citing a USA Today/Gallup poll out Wednesday.
Just 35 percent of adults surveyed last weekend said they had a favorable opinion of Cruise; 51 percent had an unfavorable opinion. And Cruise's popularity with women experienced the sharpest drop, according to the poll, from a 56 percent favorable rating last year to 35 percent now.
Tom's unfavorable rating
edit, early friday: I suppose I should have a prediction after all this talk, 35/110. While it might look cheesy, the budget is on the screen, it is a popular genre, and looks like it will be female-friendly unlike many typical summer movies. If it wasn't for the tracking info I'd guess higher.

Certainly not a summer blockbuster.

I don't believe that people ever go to a movie by default. There are plenty of other things to do besides watch an over-budgeted movie.

It will do a little better than many expect, but only a little. And that per default because I think that it is actually the summer already, but the only big flick out there is M:I-3, so Poseidon will be able to attract audiences. It does have money shots and it did get enough theatres and screens. Looks like summer fun and its short running time will help. WoM will most likely be rather mediocre.
Final Predictions:
Openiong weekend - $27.9 million
Total gross - $74 million
Worldwide, it should make around $180-200 million. Rather bad for a film with a $150+ million budget.

 Abandon Ship
I now see Poseidon tanking bad, with a $20M OW likely. Abandon ship!

I plotted the available 10PM showings on a map and realized that my analysis was not congruent with the rest of the nation. Plus, there was apparently a memo sent to theaters that Poseidon may not make its initial $21M tracking, and that couldn't be good.

$33.8m for a total of $93.1m.
Was fully aware of tracking, but hey, screw those. :-)

what if they are down playing it so that insane expectations are lowered and then the movie will be considered a surprise hit.
I thought it was way more entertaining than MI3. So if anyone asks me which movie they should see, I would say Poseidon.,

Um, I really doubt that's it. It's one of my most anticipated of the year, but I'm not going to act blind and pretend that the film isn't in deep trouble in terms of box-office. I'll be shocked if it tops $35 million this weekend.
