So there are quite a few people who are disappointed (which I don't get) by CA3's $182m opening.

So I'm asking myself what's the disappointment benchmark for next year's summer season opener?

At this point I think 120 would be a good benchmark. Below 100 would be underwhelming.

CA:WS did 95m OW. Civil War does 181m
Guardians did 94m OW. Guardians 2 should do double as well if not more.
It was well liked by the GA so it has shot at 190-200m.

Disappointment benchmark for it would be anything under 170m

Yes, because CIVIL WAR was a straight sequel to THE WINTER SOLDIER.

LOL! this is all kinds of wrong. Anyways, I'd hate to sound like a broken record, but I never saw this one increasing much on the first. The opening weekend could be bigger, but this has IM2 potential written all over it. As long as it's not a disappointment quality wise like that movie it should do $300M+.

Below 100m. I expect the goodwill of the first film to carry over at least 105-110m opening.
120m+ is breakout territory.

There is no reason this can't do 125+ if it's well received. Really none. That would not be a breakout at all.

For me, as long as it out-opens the first film it should not be seen as a disappointment.

Pretty much agree with Algren, but will set the target at $100 million. This franchise already started off big, so a sizable increase will be difficult as seen with many other such cases.

There is no reason whatsoever why it should not at the very very least increase the same way Iron Man 2 increased over the first Iron Man (which also started off very big). That's a 30% increases and means a $122.5 million opening for Guardians 2. That should be the benchmark.

I am very interested to see what the first trailer for this will look like because I have no idea what the BIG SELL will be. It can't be Russel/Stallone and if the main villain is indeed Nebula that's going to be boring. I wish they had found a way to put Thanos in this because it's about fucking time we see him do something, but they could just be saving him for Ragnarok.

I think best case does include $400 million. It is not impossible for it to get there even with a $140 million opening.

Nebula is rumored to become one of the Guardians throughout the film, so no.

Yeah those early reactions were always going to be positive. Look out for Spiderman Homecoming, the entire movie is during post-credits.

Most of the reactions I've seen have been positive, but not overly so. A lot of "it's just as good as the first"... Which is disappointing.

As good as the first should do no? The first had great WoM.

With how similar the feel of the movie is, I would expect audiences would want something different, or something better.
