Re: Star Wars Episode 7 OD > 100m Club
Thing is...you do realize that a $100+ million opening day most likely means a $800+ million total, right?

Re: Star Wars Episode 7 OD > 100m Club
Talk about the wrong take away from JW. 1) JURASSIC PARK is a more popular & beloved brand among millennial than STAR WARS was/is. JP was a 1990s generation thing. Star Wars belongs to the late 70s/early 80s. 2) Discretionary income mid December is too low. Combined with vacation, it just cannot produce that type of mega rush. I don't think folks understand how amazing $140 million or so will be for TFA when it opens in December. Dr. Lecter wrote: Nope. Anything above $60 million would be a HUGE win. Correct.

I really don't see why this can't break the OW record in December. Didn't I Am Legend set the record for a non-sequel at the time? And I think ROTK would have opened over $100M had it opened on a Friday. A 4+ multiplier doesn't have to happen just because it's December.

this is just straight up wrong. No, it isn't. I didn't say Star Wars had no appeal to people outside the late 70s/early 80s. I said it was huge to them and to everybody else, just another one of a handful of a huge brands. I firmly believe Jurassic Park is a stronger brand with children of the 1990s than Star Wars is though, without a shadow of a doubt. SW is big but it isn't that big. 100m opening day in December? GTFO.

Yeah, but if it is even okay received, it will get a 3.5X like all the LOTR/Hobbit films.

Talking as one of them, you are 100% correct. In my school, there was one boy that liked Star Wars. He was a moron. But there were loads that liked Jurassic Park (and one that even obsessed about it to the extent that he would do a raptor sound if you pissed him off, and he would act like a dinosaur from time to time). Believe it or not, I went to a bog standard public school, not a mental asylum.

Re: Star Wars Episode 7 OD > 100m Club
ROTK's Wednesday adjusts to 46 million, change it to a Friday and it's good for 55 million, add in 3D and IMAX, and it being the most hyped film of all time 65-80 is a very reasonable range. 100 million does seem out of range, but ROTK's opening was not small potatoes in any way, and SW should have no issue surpassing it. crushing it.
I stand by SW OD over December OW record. 100 seems out of reach but #2015 is alive and well.
Algren, you're not American. It's pretty well known fact that JP has been more popular internationally then SW. Domestically SW has always been #1, then anyone's argument for #2 (LOTR, Indy) then JP is in the Back to the Future/ Batman level of the top 5.

I could see TFA opening day being near the current dec. record if it's the 70 million I'm thinking.

Algren wrote: After today? Why, what happened today that made it a certainty for you? I'm in because he's including previews. Star Wars will have higher demand than Jurassic World even in December. It'll need just $17 million more. I think it'll get there.
