Re: would it be wise to make a Cars 3?
See the difference between the first and second Cars movie in BO total then do inflation, 3D and WOM. Consider brand name and maybe its not such a great idea to make Cars 3 afterall. The third one would need a REALLY good release date otherwise it might go to Dreamworks animation territory or maybe even Planes territory.

Re: would it be wise to make a Cars 3?
Taking a quick look...
2013: 9 Animated films, Cars 2 would rank 3rd/4th best. 2012: 10 Animated films, Cars 2 would rank 5th/6th best. 2011: 12 Animated films, Cars 2 would would rank 2nd/3rd best.
So... even with Pixar's WORST effort, they're still in the top half of yearly ranks. Hardly a cause for concern.

If you consider "Pixar" and "6th best animated film of the year" to be two phrases that fit together without concern, then you clearly have an entirely different idea about the potential of the company than I do.

And I think audiences perception of these films is align with the critics. Wreck it Ralph wasn't that big. It didn't break out

And we didn't even include the "best" Disney film since 2010! Winnie The Pooh! 90% RT, 74 MC.

If we're gonna use artificial endpoints, might as well go back to when Disney stopped using traditional animation!
2010: Toy Story 3- 99% RT, 92 MC
2009: Princess/Frog- 84% RT, 73 MC Up- 98% RT, 88 MC
2008: Bolt- 88% RT, 67 MC WallE- 96% RT, 94 MC
2007: Meet The Robinsons- 66% RT, 61 MC Ratatouille- 96% RT, 96 MC
2005/2006: Cars- 74% RT, 73 MC Chicken Little- 36% RT, 48 MC

Re: would it be wise to make a Cars 3?
So it looks like Disney has plateaued in the low 70's, where as Pixar HAS dropped from the NINETIES. Could it be that critics judge Pixar films harsher, so a "not as good" effort from Pixar gets a lower score than normal?
Maybe.

Frozen made more than every Pixar film outside of TS3.

PIXAR clearly doesn't care what people think. The fact they are still making sequels despite constant complaints shows this.

Re: would it be wise to make a Cars 3?
Another thing I don't get...
Every time an animated movie does very well ($200+ mil) everyone asks when the sequel is coming. Yet when Pixar does it for a few of their films, people complain like hell.

^ People are stupid and just demand the best from the bests
Dragon, Lego, Ralph, Despicable Me break out and people ask for sequels
Pixar announces sequels to their beloved films and people fuck them

Re: would it be wise to make a Cars 3?
I honestly believe that people wouldn't be complaining as much about the sequels if: 1.) It didn't seem like Pixar was meddling in, and to some people's eyes watering down, all their director-driven original projects (cancelling newt, replacing Brenda Chapman on Brave, taking Bob Peterson off The Good Dinosaur and delaying it a year and a half). 2.) Cars 2 and the Planes franchise never happened.
To some people (mostly geeks and animation fans), 1. and 2. in combination represent Pixar selling out, a triumph of commerce over art, a betrayal of everything they believe Pixar stood for. They built Pixar up as everything Disney should be but wasn't under Eisner, and when they see Pixar/Lasseter doing things that they perceive as similar to what Disney/Eisner was doing before (sequels, merchandising, promising projects being interfered with or cancelled, closing Disney's 2D unit a second time), they interpret it as all being interrelated, a sign of artistic rot, a fall from grace, a giant leap backward for the animation medium, or somesuch.
To this group, Cars is the poster child for everything they think Pixar is doing wrong. They seem to take the very existence of Cars 2, Planes and now Cars 3 as an affront to artistic integrity. If they didn't exist, there would probably still be some complaints about too many sequels, but not the kind of nerd-rage that Cars invokes.
Honestly, I think this is all overblown; each film stands and falls on its own merits. No, I don't care for Cars, and I wouldn't weep if it disappeared off the face of the earth, but it is popular, and some people seem to react to this fact like so: "How dare you entertain these philistine rednecks and degrade the art form! And you philistine rednecks, how dare you contribute to the popularity of something that we don't like!"
And also, the flip side is that Incredibles 2 is the one film all the Pixar-geeks were clamoring for.

If you didn't know... Cars 2 is one of, if not the, best looking film Pixar has created.

And to make it clear, all that stuff I said is not representative of my own views. I was trying to distill and explain the whole "Pixar is selling out" viewpoint that you tend to find on places like Cartoon Brew.

Re: would it be wise to make a Cars 3?
Pixar is kinda like the movie studio version of the New England Patriots. Sure, they haven't won a Super Bowl in 10! years... and they've had some rough spots... but I'd still take them over any other team in the league. Because they have BB (Brad Bird/Bill Belichick). And I'm assuming Tom Brady would be the "braintrust".
